From Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and scribe of Marvel's Astonishing X-Men, comes Serenity, the hit comic based on the sensational cult TV show Firefly and the immensely popular movie Serenity. The crew of the ship Serenity once again find themselves broke and on the wrong side of a number of very large firearms, making this issue a case study in how to mix intense, Whedon-style character interaction with cinematic action and violence. Artist Will Conrad and colorist Laura Martin paint a rough and wild world of adventure across a strange and dangerous universe.
Joss Whedon (born Joseph Hill Whedon) is an American screenwriter, executive producer, film and television director, comic book writer, occasional composer, and actor, and the founder of Mutant Enemy Productions and co-creator of Bellwether Pictures.
He is best known as the creator and showrunner of the television series 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003)', 'Angel (1999–2004)', 'Firefly (2002)' and its film follow-up 'Serenity (2005)', and 'Dollhouse (2009–2010)', as well as the web-series' 'Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog (2008)'. Whedon co-wrote and produced the horror film 'The Cabin in the Woods (2012)', and wrote and directed the film adaptation of Marvel's 'The Avengers (2012)', the third highest-grossing film of all time.
Many of Whedon's projects have cult status and his work is notable for portraying strong female characters and a belief in equality.
Based off the totally bad-ass-tastic TV show Firefly, Those Left Behind takes the reader on an adventure that the show’s devastating cancellation after only one season could not. (It also takes place before the film, Serenity, in case you’re curious, and even ties in several recognizable adversaries from the series. Did I mention how awesome it is?)
With beautiful illustrations that genuinely capture the actors’ likenesses throughout, this graphic novel is pretty much a work of art. You don’t even have to read it to appreciate it. But if you didn’t, then you’d miss the touching, funny, and amazing foreword by Nathan Fillion (it’s by Nathan Fillion and about heroes; how could it not be amazing?!).
And let’s face it: you’d also miss out on all that trademark dialogue complete with all the chemistry, wit, and action you got from the TV show.
Kicking off in the middle of a heist gone wrong, the story sweeps you up into yet another adventure where the rag-tag crew is just trying to earn enough dough to drop off the map for a while. Old enemies have other plans for Mal and his gang, and the crew finds themselves up against some mean lookin’ thugs, terrible odds and even some Blue Gloves.
Packed with dynamic action and comedy, this is an essential must-have for anyone who has ever called themself a Firefly fan.
I read a whole bunch of these in a row and won't be writing a review for them all. I know almost nothing of the Serenity/Fire Fly world, but these are a lot of fun. It is easy enough to follow along and learn about the characters. The stories are entertaining, the dialogue isimpressive (and sometimes hilarious), and the artwork is phenomenal.
