The International Jew: The World's Foremost Problem

Rate this book
The reader of this set of Dearborn Independent articles will immediately be struck by markers of its historical period and the virulence of its author's antisemitism. The use of vocabulary long out of use and the editorialised prejudice functions as a time stamp.

The small town newspaper the Dearborn Independent was purchased by the American industrialist Henry Ford, and whilst the editorial articles were not Ford's work they were directed and edited with his input from the time of its purchase. Shocking as they may be this work is notable not for the views that it expresses about Judaism and its adherents, but for the scope of the Jewish conspiracy that it envisages. The International Jew, although distasteful to the modern reader, has the unique attribute of showing us a piece of writing that we can be certain made it across the Atlantic Ocean and influenced the fevered thinking of senior Nazi party figures.

Those who approach history as an opportunity to learn, an opportunity to ensure it never comes again, are here offered a chance to understand the pernicious rhetoric that lulled a party and more than one population less than a century ago. At all times the reader should hold on to the knowledge that the chief influence on this writing was considered a potential presidential candidate, these articles were stacked in waiting rooms, car dealerships and parroted by the national press. A powerful reminder that we must always remain vigilant and a precious resource, reminding the reader what to watch for.

In my study of antisemitism, I of course became aware of the series of antisemitic articles published in the Dearborn Independent by Henry Ford. I did not know that they had been collected in book form, until my friend Simon Jesterson jokingly told me that you can’t buy a Ford until you read this book. At least I hope it was a joke? So I guess now I can buy a Ford? Perhaps. It seems this book exists in two forms: first, as a massive four volume set (which is probably not worth reading unless you are a historian specializing in Henry Ford) and in this current book.

As I continue to study antisemitism, I am learning that antisemitism exists in multiple forms; primarily in the racial form epitomized by the nazis and neo-nazis and the religious form epitomized by Martin Luther. Ford's antisemitism seems to be neither of these. He writes, "The Jew is not objectionable in his person, creed, or race." Ford's objection to the Jews appears to be primarily economic: they are objectionable because they want to control the world. "The international Jew, as already defined, rules not because he is rich, but because in a most marked degree he possesses the commercial and masterful genius of his race, and avails himself of a racial loyalty and solidarity the like of which exists in no other human group."

The book is clumsier than most other antisemitic books I have read to this point. Mein Kampf is often accused of being poorly written, but I found it to be much better written than the International Jew. Maybe because The Internet Jew was not conceived of as a book but as a series of articles? About half the book was quotes from The Protocols of the Elders of Zion followed by examples showing that the Protocols were being realized before our very eyes. At the time these articles were written, Ford believed the Protocols were genuine, but later he was forced to acknowledge that they were forgeries. He then claimed that his staff had misled him into believing the Protocols were genuine.

Other glaring blunders are statements that are either downright untrue or distortions, such as "When Spain drove out the Jews, Spain lost financial leadership and has never regained it," "The invention of the stock exchange is also credited to Jewish financial talent," "The Soviet is not a Russian but a Jewish institution," and "They were the inventors of the newsletter." Like most antisemitic literature, Ford is not ashamed to purvey false quotes, such as ""All other means of distinction are denied him; he must rise by wealth, or not at all, attributed to Barnard Von Oven," and "What are you prating about? As long as we do not have the press of the whole world in our hands, everything you may do is vain," attributed to Baron Montefiore.

Ford claims that there is no religious prejudice against Jews: "There is no hesitation in stating that there is no prejudice whatever in the Christian churches against the Jew on account of his religion. On the contrary, there is not only a deep sense of indebtedness, but a feeling of sharing with the Jew in his religion." Ford claims that no Christian ever calls Jews Christ killers, but rather this is a charge against Christians that has been fabricated by the Jews!

I would not recommend reading this book unless you have an interest in the history of antisemitism in America.
