Beautiful, cunning Miss Beatrice Stoubridge sees nothing wrong with leading on the wealthy Duke of Gynde to further the social prospects of the daughters of the Duke's enemies, but her feigned interest turns into true love--and big trouble
I've read 2-3 books from the alphabet series and liked those. For me, this book is all about Willie and Andy's stupid antics. I enjoyed their banter, their idiocy and their refusal to grow up and act sensibly. Comedy is expected from Kasey's books, and she did not disappoint. Coming to the leads, however, I am a little disappointed. Trixy was very good until she decided she wasn't probably good enough for the duke. Seriously! I mean, that man hardly tried to know about her and she thinks she doesn't deserve him because he is by nature a nice man. Harry was, well the typical hero- good looking, hard-headed or rather pig-headed, arrogant. Accepted, Trixy's phrasing of blackmail did not sound right, but to assume she would want to be his mistress was stupidity. I couldn't help but wonder if being stupid was a family trait. And, his thoughts from, "no way I would marry a woman like her" "I love you, I don't care" wasn't convincing to me. The other fellow, Sir R something seemed genuinely interested in Trixy. That statement about him knowing more about her than Harry was a right on target. Personally, I felt Harry doesn't deserve Trixy. He hardly exerted any effort to know more about her. All he did was assume. Yet, he got her. The twins were probably funny, they did not have much presence. Lucy had more space than them. And, that woman was infuriating.
One of the main reasons I read Kasey Michael's Alphabet Regency Romance novels is that much of the time, they are peopled by main and lesser characters that not only bring a grin, a smile, but often full belly laughter that lift my spirits tremendously. If per chance I am reading a novel such as The Somerville Farce at 2:00 am when my husband is sleeping, then I am in a pickle. Such was my situation last night as I tried my best to stifle my laughter.
In The Somerville Farce, we have two lesser characters, William, the younger brother of the duke, Harry (Duke of Glynde), and William's friend, Adam, who decide to kidnap the young daughter of a man, Mr. Somerville, who wronged Harry's and William's family years before. But... it seems that Mr. Somerville has twin daughters and they have a maid and a chaperone. Further, the chaperone is handy with a pistol so... Well, let's just say that William and Adam get way more than they bargained for and Harry is left to pick up the pieces of a kidnapping gone awry.
Of course, the love story is there - between Harry and the lovely governess, Miss Beatrice Stourbridge (Trixy) - not my favorite love story among Ms. Michaels' books but still a nice story. However, the happenings in this book gave me some of the best laughs I have had in a long time. I give this book 5 stars for hilarious episodes and fun characters.
Closer to a rating of 3 1/2 stars, really liked two lead characters, inventive storyline ,the brother and his childhood friend are worth reading the book. All in all good book, no sex, comedic overtones.
Very good, however, I did read this a while ago, so I don't remember all the details. Michelle Kasey AKA Kasey Michaels always writes very good romances, including this regency romance.
