As an avid snowboarder from Utah, Ben grew up with a passion for learning. This thirst for knowledge led him to sports, music, and academic endeavors. After a year of college, he did volunteer work in Brazil and became fluent in three languages. Graduating from the University of Central Florida, he started and ran several successful businesses before publishing his first novel in June of 2012. By the end of the year he'd sold almost ten thousand copies of The Second Draeken War, and he began writing full-time. Now spanning 10,000 years, ten titles, and two series, The Chronicles of Lumineia represents a sprawling YA series that has sold over fifty thousand copies, and continues to expand its readership across all ages. Each of his books has been inspired by his wonderful wife and five beautiful children.

I'll keep this short: I love Ben's books. They are always fun and the characters are always engaging. I am so happy that he decided to write a whole trilogy about Tryton and the rock trolls, who I loved in their short appearances in his other books. Tryton represents the best of what I think everyone would like to be: selfless, noble, master of his craft, humble, and self-sacrificing. In this series we see how this one character has an immense impact on his entire culture, starting to change them from a vicious, war-loving people to the rock trolls we see save the entire world in the Second Draeken War. As always, I can't wait for the next book.
I was jumping for joy when I seen this on Audible. I absolutely loved the first book and I also absolutely love Ralph Lister (sp*) as a narrator. Very good choice for choosing him.
This book is fast paced, lots of action with just enough magic. Well placed magic I might add. The characters are each very unique. The politics and how relevant it is to today's world is also very interesting.
Lost it's essence. There are several things that annoy me about this series and much of them I forgave, hence why I finished the first book and it was only in the second that I stopped. Yet it wasn't a slow grinding accumulation of faults that made me put down the novel - no, it was a simple, singular one: the story lacked vision.
What do you mean by that? What I mean by vision is that the scope of the novel was frustratingly narrow. Ben Hale introduces to us a fascinating expansive world then quickly hides it from us by constraining the events to surround the small caves the trolls live in. After spending more than enough time with the trolls, I expected Tryton's next journey to be more centred around him learning about the other races. Instead he is roped more tightly to the frankly (at this point) boring trolls. This isn't helped by the fact that the Tryton doesn't seem to have any pressing problems and much of his part of the story is aimless and meandering.
Wait. What about his brother? Isn't he a "pressing problem?"? Yes and no mainly because Sybrik is so cartoonishly evil that I was frankly skimming through his POV chapters. So it was hard to put any weight on the problems he was causing for Tryton. It's my own fault there though since I require my POV characters to be somewhat relatable or I lose interest quickly. If Sybrik had spent the novel cackling in the background instead of showing us what he was doing, I would've honestly been more interested in the novel as a whole.
Overall, a promising book ruined by what seemed to be plotless story.

And all that lives will be his prey Tryton wishes to save his people, redeem them to a time of honor and not of bloodshed, his brother Sybrik lives for war and death and does not wish to see change only revenge. Trytons will and friendships have started the Rock trolls along that path but can it be enough. I am enjoying this series, being a warrior is more than fighting and defeating an opponent, it is knowing when and whom to fight. Defending those weaker than you is part of the Warrior's ethos or should be, these books show that.
This should have been a 5 star review like the first installment, but too much of the novel was devoted to the villain. What was supposed to be a descent into evil was just wallowing in it. This took too much effort to endure.
The Age of War had a many good components but left me wanting much more out of the plot. When big magic is thrown around you really need a lot more depth and background behind it.
Enjoyed the continuing story of Tryton and his quest for peace. I figured from the first book that he was fated to fight his brother. Was Surprised by how the battle would be fought and the people Tryton was able to find and unite to his cause. Enjoyed the book from page one to the last sentence. Thanks
I have it on both Kindle and Audio. Don't really remember when I finished it, but did just finish the audio a few days ago. It's a great book. The perfect end to another amazing series.
