“I’m really excited to get Charms onto the shelves…With its themes of Girl Power and family bonds, it’s a fun book for a wide age range.” — Anna Augason, Santa Cruz Library (Staff Pick)
Few forces are stronger than the bond of sisterhood. The laws of physics are a close second, though—at least for Emerald, Mia, and Terra, three teenagers whose talents allow them to control time, talk to people no longer living, and manipulate the string vibrations that make up the universe.
Even with these “charms,” the girls have their work cut out for them when faced with an elaborate thread of mysteries: What family secret is Mama and Auntie Eva trying to hide from them? What is Colin, the menacing boy from New Orleans, so desperately looking for here in Santa Cruz? Matters are further complicated when Emerald is blindsided by an instant and highly impractical attraction to a new boy in town. Together, the Tempest sisters must unravel these mysteries before family tensions boil over, all the while still learning the nature and extent of their powers.
Charms is the first book in Leslie Calderoni’s Tempest Trinity, a smart new Young Adult trilogy packed with mystery, girl power, and the magic of science.
Leslie Calderoni shares a home in the Santa Cruz mountains with her three dogs, one cat, and a hamster named Jack White. A self-confessed Nerd Girl, she was over the moon to be able to edit much of her most recent book in an office across HWY 101 from NASA’s Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA.
Go girl power. The tempest sisters come of age, and learn to harness their unusual, magical powers. I enjoyed reading this book a must read for all those who love magic and mystery. They all have their own lives and problems which make it even more so life lessons for them. They learn to deal with it and overcome what life places into their paths. A must read.
A cute quick story about 3 sisters with special powers. The ending though makes you need to have book 2 there to continue the story. I'm not a huge fan of cliff hangers. I did enjoy the story though.
i won a copy of this book in the good reads give away, i thought it was ok, its a nice easy quick read, kinda a simple mix of shows such as charmed or witches of eastend with a bit of ghost whisper. its a story about sisters with powers but to be honest they didnt seem to do much with them, one can slow or speed up time, one talks to the dead, and one can feel vibrations and send out vibes to calm people down etc. maybe its an age thing as its aimed at a more teen market (im in my early 30s) but that's not always an issue with books i choose, personally i feel indifferent i will probably read future books to see what happens but wont be in a rush to get them on the day of release,
I received this book from Goodreads first reads. This was a quick, fun read! It was an extremely unique idea where the three teenagers have special powers or 'charms.' I loved the deep friendship the three sisters had and how they always teemed up together throughout the novel. I also liked the hint of a romance, although it never really fully fledged into one. However, I think as the series progresses, something will happen between the two characters. This book was a simple read but still very enjoyable. If you are looking for a quick fun read, this is your book!
I won this book from Goodreads. I do like YA books and this was a good read. It leaves you with a cliff hanger. I would read the next book in the series to find out what happens next.
"Charms (Tempest Trinity, #1)" by Leslie Calderoni is young adult novel filled with mystery and suspense.
Charms is a clean young adult novel about three sisters that are learning to use their powers(charms). Their powers bring them wealth, but also trouble they try to fix. The story ends on a clif-hanger so be prepared to read "Conjures," the second novel in the Tempest Trinity.
Although this novel is a short, quick read there are detailed situations that didn't have much impact to the story. While some important and suspenseful parts of the story I thought were rushed and not explained in detail.
“Charms” is surprisingly good for a self-published book. It follows three sisters, twins Mia and Terra, and slightly younger sister Emerald or Em. They have powers, but not in a witchy way- they can manipulate the laws of (supposedly) physics. Em can manipulate time to make it seem slower or faster. Mia can see through dimensions, and Terra can alter emotions through the use of vibrations. The book begins when their aunt Eva comes into town from New Orleans. Around the same time, Em sees a cute new guy named Ryan and they instantly have a connection. Ryan and his brother turn out to be looking for a book which was stolen from them- by Eva. The book plays out from there.
Overall, it was very short and straightforward. Their ‘charms’ are explained well but I didn’t really buy the connection to physics- it just seemed more like straightforward powers of a specific type (e.g. not general like a witch). The sisters are really close, which was sweet. The relationship between Ryan and Em was a little hard to believe, but they are teenagers, so there is some lust there. The plot moves very fast and ends on a cliffhanger. I would be curious to read more, so I am giving it 4 stars. I think it will be even better once the family’s connections and history are explained more.
Please note that I received this book through a goodreads giveaway. All opinions are my own.
A really quick and entertaining teen and young (and not-so-young) adult book. Great thoughtful powers and I appreciate the smart girls without an over-emphasis on romance in the plot. The only complaint is that it was over too soon! I can't wait for the next one!
Both my daughters loved CHARMS and can't wait to read more of Leslie Calderoni's work. Great job!! I won this great book on GoodReads and like I do with most my wins I will be paying it forward by giving my win either to a friend or library to enjoy.
