"In 1940, President Roosevelt institutes a peacetime draft, promising the men it will only be for one year, but once the year is up, the U.S. will have entered World War II. Abbott's tale follows the lives of Ginny Fairfax and Jack Andrews. After only a month of dating, Jack is drafted. Ginny had already envisioned the stereotypical house with the picket fence, so when he leaves, she's distraught. Although he hasn't mentioned marriage, when he begs her to come see him on base and she refuses, he proposes, and no one is more surprised than he." My in-laws met during the war, Darrell spent a year overseas and Phyllis awaited his return from Subic Bay where he was an engineer on base. We have their letters and his are intelligent, clever letters and her letters are sweet little romantic notes of nothing much said. This book reminded me of that time in their lives, as she dreamed about their romantic life together and he just wants to get back home and actually start a life of his own, out side of the Navy. I enjoyed this read simply to understand life during the war for romantic dreamy brides to be, like my mother-in-law. They married and lived happily ever after until death did they part, 45 years later.
