131 Days #3

Spikes and Edges

Strength.
Honor.
Death.

Once every year, in the city of Sunja, gladiators meet within the arena known as Sunja’s Pit. Some men enter for the lure of fortune, some for the fame, and some simply for the fight. The games continue for days until a champion is finally crowned.

Or until all involved perish.

Feeling the weight of sustained injuries, Halm decides upon his future with the Ten, which prompts a crippled Pig Knot to contemplate his own remaining days. An act of vengeance drives Borchus into hiding. Within the underbelly of the Pit, arrangements are made to introduce Sunja’s most despised and dangerous criminals into the games, including a captured group of Nordish Jackals.

All the while, the House of Ten prepares for its day of vengeful blood matches, where the gladiator known only as Junger will shine as a legend.

This is blood sport at its finest.
At its worst.
At its longest.

I honestly feel like I’m watching a soap opera or a very dramatic movie during this series, and I’m very impressed! A lot of introspective, emotionally moving monologues that brought me to tears. This book also delves into the feelings of restlessness and useless that come along with sudden physical disabilities. Characters have to learn how to continue on, and find a purpose in themselves beyond what they originally saw.

I also enjoy the romantic and suspenseful tension between Borchus and Sindra!

Who are these mysterious strangers that show up at the end of the book 👀

An interesting read but again disappointed by a authir

I've read all three books in the series as enjoyed them very much. The story development was really good and I was just getting into the characters and plot. While I understand that the author must follow a path that affords him a means of supporting himself, i wish that once an author starts a series he would at least give the readers some closure instead of just stopping in the middle of the series. while this in not the first and , I'm sure the last author to do this, I hope that they take into account the readers that supported them. I hope Mr Blackmore can find the time to bring the series to some sort of conclusion I'm sure that there are loyal readers out there that would deeply appreciate that. I plan to continue to support Mr Blackmore by purchasing his other series.

At this point in the story, I'm very comfortable with the characters and I'm warming up to the world where this gladiatorial competition takes place. Fortunately, book one did a great job of world building, and although that was a slow start, things steadily pickup as the world becomes more familiar. This is of course because this author is simply fantastic. He gives you a world and a story you didn't even know you wanted. I'm committed to pretty much reading anything he writes and I am about to dive into book 4. I definitely recommend the series to fans of the author or GOT, Spartacus, Gladiator, or fast paced bloody action.

Did the first 3 books in 2 weeks, clearly something I enjoy.

I will say this is the weakest of the series so far it still has me hooked. The added of more characters does lose me at times and the side story of the jackals clearly wasn't going to go anywhere and was just a set up for the next book.

However, I really enjoy the story and will carry it on.

Though Gall is being somewhat of a little bitch needs to reel it in a little.

This series keeps getting better. I'm really enjoying delving into the individual character storylines. There's growth, second chances, trauma, grief, fear, anger, retribution, joy, redemption, love; the full spectrum of human emotions. All against the bloody backdrop of gladiator games and war on the horizon. I love it.

I'm really enjoying this series, each book adds a new element to the world. Fun easy read. Can't wait for the next book.

If you like fantasy, gladiator fights, underworld gangs and so much more, give this series a try.

4.5 stars

0.5/1 ★ for world-building

I was hoping the 131 Days series would conclude with the omnibus that includes books 1-3. I'm both bummed and excited that it didn't XD Bummed because the series is still unfinished as of 2023, but excited because I want more! Hopefully by the time I get through books 4-5, book 6 will be out!

Narrator John (Rafter) Lee once again gives an amazing performance with his growling baritone and accent work. I wish he narrated all of Blackmore's books because I want to try his other works, but no other narrator comes close to Lee's talent for me.

I've become attached to friendly Halm and mysterious Junga (I don't know how the names are spelled since I've only done the audiobooks), and can't wait to read more about the whole awesome cast of characters!

One of my favourite authors and this book like his others does not disappoint. I like to feel invested in characters when reading a book and Keith writes great characters. And the plots not too shabby either.
