"The only hope of Christianity is in the rehabilitating of the Pauline theology. It is back, back, back, to an incarnate Christ and the atoning blood, or it is on, on, on to atheism and despair," wrote Francis L. Patton, former president of Princeton University . Those prophetic words aptly introduce William R. Newell's classic commentary on the Epistle to the Romans and underscore the church's continuing need to study and teach the book of Romans.
William Reed Newell (1868-1956) was known for his Biblical commentaries on Romans, Hebrews, and the Book of Revelation. He moved to Leesburg, Florida, in 1910, and for some time was pastor of the Presbyterian church there.
This will be an ongoing read and reference.. I have only gone through Romans 1 so far, as that is primary reason I purchased this years ago.. to accompany a deep dive/memorization of that chapter. In going back through my highlights, I am compelled now to give this 5 stars and to go read through the remainder of the chapters.
This book is changing my life. God knew I was desperate for a deep understanding of all the layers of salvation and reconciliation Jesus has accomplished for us. The freedom of the Gospel is on full display in a way I have never seen before through Newell’s intricate and grandfatherly presentation. It is a salve to my soul.
this one of the best commentaries on Romans tgat I have ever read! If anyone is truly wanting too learn the book of romans, this issue will not dissapoint.
