Deputy City Manager Burk Harmon has always been the strong one for his family, but recently those responsibilities have dwindled. When Lacie Heatherton, Assistant Director for Parks and Recreation, ropes him into a city-sponsored trip to the mountains with fifty seniors, Burk has two things on his mind: considering a possible promotion and wooing Lacie past friendship and into a future. Lacie has emotional scars and a thirteen-year-old daughter to remind her that men can be cruel and unforgiving. Can Burk convince Lacie to relax her "no dating" policy or will he surrender his dreams of family and love?

I received a review copy of Burk's Surrender last summer, and promptly forgot about it until, to my delight, I found it again while cleaning out my emails. Perhaps by God's design, the timing was perfect!
This is the first novel I've read from Ms. Hiers, but I can tell she is not new to the craft. Her writing is smooth, the characters are believable (and charming), and the dialogue is engaging. This is a Christian romance, but there is plenty of chemistry between the two characters, including a mutual physical attraction, which I think the author handles quite well. She does a great job of reminding us what it's like to be in love with your "best friend" — a feeling I would wish for everyone!
The conflict between the two characters is more emotional and based on some baggage that these thirty-somethings carry around with them. And, really, by that age, who doesn't feel the weight of emotional baggage? However, that's why I would call this a "light" inspirational. I never had the feeling of "Oh no! How can these characters overcome the insurmountable odds stacked up against them?!"
For those days when you feel the odds stacked up against you and you have had just a little too much conflict in your real life, Burk's Surrender might be just what you're looking for. In my opinion, it's the perfect read for an after-work bubble bath! Although it is a novel-length piece, so you might want to separate it out into at least a couple of baths. Wouldn't want anyone to get all pruney!
I've had the pleasure of reading and reviewing all three books in this series and I have really, really enjoyed them. The Harmon Heritage series is based on three siblings who have had a tough go in life. Each of them deals with the hard things differently, but Burk has dealt the best, I think. He has been the one to carry and support his family. Now that his siblings are finally settled, Burk is able to turn his attention to his own life and finally go after what he wants.
I like Burk. He is strong and he is a thinker. He knows what he wants and he knows what he has to do to try to get it. Burk is kind and knows how to show a girl that he cares. I was all in and rooting for Burk from the very beginning.
The story flowed well. The characters are flawed and endearing. I was easily drawn into the story and I loved how it played out in my head.
My one peeve was how the author kept telling me how Burk and Lacie smelled. In almost the exact same words, over and over. I only need to be told once and maybe reminded in a different way another time. I started rolling my eyes whenever the whole scent thing came up. Enough with the smell thing already.
But, other than that, I really did enjoy this book. This author has a great way of writing and I love how easily I can fall into her books. This is a Christian fiction book.
Content: Clean. No swearing or sexual content. Mention of rape but nothing in detail.
Burk Harmon and Lacie Heatherton work for the city. He agrees to go on a trip with her, escorting 50 senior citizens to a mountain resort for a few days. Can he prove to her on this trip that he is the guy for her? I loved the chemistry between these two characters and trying to find out what was holding them back.
Lacie knows Burke is dependable, sweet, comfortable. They're best friends. She's known him since she was unmarried and pregnant with her 13 year old daughter. She invoked her no dating policy and Burk hasn't tried to date her till now. She's spent her life up to this point taking care of her daughter. Burk wants to be a bigger part of her life. But will Lacie let him?
Lacie's not sure God still cares for her. After everything she's been through, God has felt far away. Why would Burk care for her? Lacie's past is holding her back from her future. She needs healing and peace to come to terms with what happened. Can Burk convince her to give him a chance?
As Lacie's job is on the line, Burk tries to woo her, proving he can be trusted. These two characters will stay with you after you finish their story. This is a very sweet Christian romance.
No matter how others have treated you, God is always there. He loves you so much.
I received a free copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.
This is the third book in the Harmon Heritage Series, and although it can be read as a standalone, reading the first two books in the series does give the background to the characters in this book. This book follos the lives of Burk and Lacie. Burk has cared for Laci as more than just a friend for a long time and this follows their relationship as he tries to win her heart and make her see that he desires so much more than friendship from her. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, and this book is no exception. This author has a wonderful way of pulling the reader into the emotions and lives of the characters and writing a story line that keeps you reading once you have started the book. I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review, and I definitely recommend this book as well as the prior books in the series to the reader who enjoys good Christian romance.
What an amazing ending to the Harmon Heritage series.
These characters become like family. They were all so amazing in their own ways. I knew I was going to love Burk from book one, and I was right. There's just something about the great man that he is that spoke to my heart. And Lacie was an amazingly strong woman who dealt with so much. It was wonderful to reconnect with the other Harmon siblings and to see how they had grown since their own story.
Anxious to see what Dora Hiers comes up with next. She is such a talented writer. Her characters just grab your heart and won't let go!!!
