Chasing Nonconformity

Rate this book
Still reeling from accidentally marrying an exiled alien prince named Varrin, and from almost getting her head blown off by a six-armed lizard man with anger management issues, seventeen-year-old Eris Miller is ready for a vacation. But Varrin is desperate to rescue his beloved spaceship, the Nonconformity, from the clutches of the galactic government, so her vacation will just have to wait.

While Eris and Varrin chase after the stolen ship, they’re unaware that trouble is brewing on the other side of the galaxy. The villainous Emperor of Rakor has assembled a task force, led by the commander of the deadly Skin Slicers, to hunt Varrin down.

With enemies closing in and the Nonconformity slipping further and further from their grasp, Eris must ask herself: how much is she willing to sacrifice to ensure her happily ever after?

Chasing Nonconformity was EXACTLY the sequel that I wanted to Imminent Danger. It was clear that Michelle found her groove from the first book and stayed in it to write the second--full of the same wacky space references, snappy sarcasm, weird aliens and drama as the first. (And a visit from one of Varrin's famed personas, mentioned in book 1!) Speaking of Varrin, you get to see him again, which was worth the wait--just as sexy and charismatic and complicated as before.
But don't worry! This book has new characters too, who are sure to find a place in your heart...I have to say that Varrin's brother, Trystan, quickly grew on me.
Anyway! If you read 'Imminent Danger' and are debating whether or not to get the second, don't even waste your time and just GET IT! If you're reading this review and haven't read the first book yet, then for goodness' sake, READ THAT ONE AND THEN COME BACK AND READ THIS ONE! It's a fun (and funny) space romp, for everyone who enjoys Young Adult, Romance, Syfy, and lots in-between.

(My review is ahead of the release because I was a beta-reader.)

Balancing an eye for the absurd with actual danger, Proulx creates a science-fiction tale that is light and fast without being shallow or cloying.

This novel is the second in the Imminent Danger series. Thus, ‘spoilers, darling’.

Still annoyed after the revelation that Varrin’s thoughtful gift was actually a marriage contract, Eris Miller wants a vacation more than ever. However, Varrin’s ship, the Nonconformity, is in the clutches of the annoyingly benevolent galactic government, and Varrin seems even more determined than his usual arrogant, entitled self to get it back. Meanwhile, on Rakor, Varrin’s father – the Emperor – dispatches two lethal killers and a bad poet to bring his son home, whether he wants to return or not.

This volume continues in the same vein as the first one: real peril mixed with farcical situations. Punk tribble-analogues face genetically superior warriors. Alien music turns out to be a taste that’s easy to acquire. And Eris gets kidnapped yet again.

However, Proulx does not merely reprise the arc of previous book. While the relationship between Eris and Varrin is still a fusion of annoyance and attraction, this is a post-singledom dance; rather than discovering their feelings for each other, they are discovering what they are prepared to compromise because they have feelings for each other.

In parallel with the intertwining of heist and romance as Eris and Varrin try to recover the Nonconformity, Proulx provides the reader a new perspective on her universe: the mission by the Emperor’s second son, an artist in a society of warriors, to find Varrin and force him to return home. Contrasting the harshness of his bodyguards’ opinions and actions with the obsessive emotion of a poet, this second plot-line both contrasts and echoes that of Eris and Varrin.

As with the previous volume, both plot and characterisation speak to the optimism of youth. However – as before – this does not mean the book is without depth and complexity.

Eris and Varrin have both changed and remained the same, giving their scenes a sense of two people altered by their relationship and experiences yet too new to it that the changes have bedded in.

Proulx’s new characters are similarly plausible (for an absurd universe) and nuanced, making them an interesting addition to the world. Indeed they are sympathetic enough that readers might find themselves half-hoping the quest to drag Varrin home succeeds.

Overall, I enjoyed this novel. I recommend it to readers seeking fast-paced comic science-fiction that isn’t too absurd.

This is the sequel to Imminent Danger (and How to Fly Straight Into It), which I reviewed back in February. It picks up pretty much exactly where book 1 finished up and was exactly the sort of sequel I had been hoping for.

First up, we are treated to some delightful new characters, in the form of Prince Trystan, Varrin’s younger brother, and his bodyguard, Sebara. Trystan needs a lot of hugs, and someone to appreciate his poetry. Sebara does not appreciate poetry exactly, but she does earn the Prince’s trust and they develop a really adorable bond. We also meet the Emperor, Varrin and Trystan’s father, and my, isn’t he a piece of work? Trystan and Sebara are given the task of tracking Varrin down and forcing him to come back to claim his birthright.

Meanwhile, Varrin, Eris and Miguri are still searching for Varrin’s ship, the Nonconformity. Eris has basically thought that Varrin is just being a typical guy in love with his vehicle, but it turns out there’s a much bigger reason he needs to get his ship back. Along with the help of an old flame, Kalla, they form a plan to sneak into a Tetrarchy facility and steal it back. Their paths with Sebara and Trystan’s in an exciting climax.

Much of what I had to say about the first book can be echoed here. There’s still plenty of snappy dialogue, fun characters, and the world-building expands even more. Varrin still needs a punch; it got to the point where I couldn’t really reconcile his supposed feelings for Eris with the fact that he kept so. many. secrets from her. Eris kept excusing this, which did get a bit annoying after a while, as did her jealousy at the thought of anyone else with Varrin.

The final 25% was great. There was both action and character development, with all the characters involved. I’m not sure whether this series is meant as a duology or a longer series. The story actually felt quite complete at the end, though I would certainly enjoy more stories set within this universe.

I was amazed that the second book in the Imminent Danger series was even better than the first one! The characters have evolved and changed so much by the end of the story that you really feel like you've been on an amazing journey with them. Rather than just retread familiar ground, the author takes a daring (and wildly successful) risk introducing new characters and settings that really help the series' universe expand. The new characters have incredible depth and I'm really excited to see more of them. Can't wait for the next book to come out!

I devoured this book as soon as it loaded on my kindle. It was awesomely epic!! I freaking LOVE Varrin and Eris. There was a lot of adventure as in the first book. I couldn't put it down, seriously....seriously I went from my Kindle to my Kindle app. I just had to finish. Now that I have I can't wait to see what's next. I definitely saw character growth and development. I enjoyed the new characters as well. I HIGHLY recommend this series to anyone looking for an adventure!!

Ok so where do i start .....
This book is good , the author being fairly new has still room to improve in many areas and i wont flatter the author by saying that i loved the book or am crazy behind it. But if you are planning to buy this book (the kindle edition ) i would say GO for it if you liked the first book story line(as far as the price go its fairly decent) .I would just like to mention the whole story is on the title of the page but there is fun and a lot of action in this book which keeps you at the edge specially once you are half way through the book . There are places in the book where it just slips the pace but that's expected form a "Romantic" novel . I would love to have had some character development from Varrin's parents(and his home planet) as they seem to be very important rather then they just being mentioned breezily. Some things still don't make sense in this book like in the end you wanted it to look like a cliff hanger but it was NOT !.In the end i really like the action and story line was pretty good but having higher expectations in the next book (if you write one, which i am hoping for). Also the book is rated till 18 years but i don't think that matters a lot provided you like Sci-Fiction.
I rate this book a 4/5(although i am giving a full rating on Goodreads is to boost the authors work so it gets noticed ;) ).

After reading Proulx's first book, I was surprised to find it so enjoyable. I'm hardly a romance reader, and it had been the sci-fi elements that had first attracted me to it.

Then, I found myself rooting for that crazy Eris, even as I was getting flashes of Douglas Adams wincing up on a cloud.

So, when Proulx released her second installment, I was curious to see if it would hold the same interest. To my surprise, it did, and I read it in a single day. The - already pretty great - writing is even smoother now; the characters are every bit as much fun; irreverent humor (my favorite kind) abounds, and the plot thickens.

Without wanting to reveal too much, the crew of Nonconformity is chased by half the galaxy and stumble from one dangerous situation to the next in their increasingly desperate attempts to locate and retrieve their ship. New characters add to the excitement, including Varrin's adorable little brother and his no-nonsense bodyguard.

All in all, another great book by an author who's insidiously turning me into a Sci-Fi Romance fan! Looking forward to the next book in the series, as Proulx has set up nicely book 3 for us...

A satisfying sequel

While staying true to characters the story continues where the last book left off. Plays the field of emotions and broadened my appreciation of what Science fiction literature is capable of. Highly enjoyable emotional roller coaster.

As always after reading the first book in a series, I was worried that the second one wouldn't be able to live up to its predecessor. I shouldn't have worried. Chasing Nonconformity was just as exciting and fun as the first book, possibly more so.

The first jump to Trystan and Sebara had me concerned because that can sometimes break up the action for me and I lose interest. But Trystan was so adorable that I didn't even mind, and the action still flowed besides. The relatively short chapters kept everything flowing.

Overall a great book. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the fist one.
