Tom Riddle's Schooldays #1

Year 1: Silver Blood

Rate this book
Tom Riddle's Schooldays is a book series; the prequel to the Harry Potter stories.

❝ Tom found the Leaky Cauldron easily enough from Dumbledoreʼs directions. There was a small doorway, set slightly back from the level of the shops on each side of it, which the people in the street were all passing by, and perhaps not only because they had their heads down on account of the rain. It seemed to belong entirely to another world. Tom pushed at the door, which opened with a slight creak. ❞

~ from Chapter One

When Tom is given the chance to escape from the humdrum life at Wool's Orphanage in London, he's very glad to finally be amongst people at least a little bit like him. Even in the magical world though, Tom finds he is still something of an outsider.

I like delving into the minds of evil-doers, true or fiction. Their motives and reasons for committing horrendous crimes are a source of fascination for me. In reality, it usually boils down to childhood abuse or / and neglect, but what about fiction? So obviously, I would be interested in the greatest evil wizard of recent times - Lord Voldemort.

As much as I love the Harry Potter world, I have found the villain section of the stories pitifully underdeveloped. Sometimes, their motivations seemed obscure to me and I always hoped JKR would do more about developing at least some of it. She did come out with more snippets of information here and there, but nothing too extensive. Fan fiction did fill the gap in extensively. But here is an extensive look at Tom Riddle's whole childhood, and his journey to becoming Lord Voldemort. Unfortunately, the series was abandoned midway but I'll take what I can get!

The first half was excellent! We follow Tom and his making friends with the first year Slytherins. There's some quidditch and other actions and I loved how a muggle-born girl has a crush on Tom, and he seems to respond to her friendship overtures. The details were excellent and it was interesting to see how the original members of the Death Eaters interacted with him in school. Tom is supposedly very talented already and can perform magic beyond the ability of other first-years.

In the second half of the book, it took a dark turn, which was nice. But also felt rather random. Except he is just eleven years old at this time ... I didn't find there was a logical reason for this plot. The second half is also a lot of narration by the author or ruminations by Tom, very little interactions. This was less fun for me.

Overall, Styles seems to have balanced canon and creativity quite well and inserted in random extra world building that I enjoyed. Let's see how it develops!
