The more i think about it, aside from the abrupt ending, the more this is a classic and the defining genre. I read the Historian shortly after and still think this is the better novel, albeit more romanticised
Dracula is just a wandering beautiful novel. I re-read this after listening to the audiobook. And perhaps Dracula is a little naieve in characterisation, but the sense of dread feels so real. Its also great how the hidden character is the locations where key scenes are set, notably Whitby.
I love the themes in this, the overriding one of submission, obedience, of giving in or resisting. Its very very psychological and the book is an almost collective nervous breakdown when faced with an overwhelming enemy. Harker is a fascinating character (Jonathan), and Van Helsing has this enigmatic role.
