Fearless and brilliant, Mehmet conquered Constantinople, the Byzantine city believed to be unconquerable, by dragging ships overland. From then on, Constantinople became known as Istanbul, and Mehmet as the Conqueror. His skills and ambitions, however, extended well beyond the military.
