A lovely lyrical tale of a seafaring cat and his mates who visit an island also populated by cats. They are welcomed and treated to strange adventures and a feast. After a lovely time, they then bid their new friends a fond farewell and sail home.
I read this book so many times that I had it memorized by the time I was in first grade. Somehow, in one of our moves, my beloved book was lost. But one day, when my first son was still learning to walk, he wandered over to a rack of books in the grocery store, and I recognized the familiar yellow cover with red lettering! Not one but two copies of Captain Kitty! I bought them both, just in case.
There are two things I love about this book. The first is that it is actually a well written and easy to read poem. The verbiage is vivid yet uses simple words, and the rhythm is natural and never forced. The second thing is that the message is sweet, and timeless. It is exemplified in the last few words which my sister and I say to this day whenever we open our own front door after a long journey...
"I've been away, but I must say that home looks good to me."
This was my favorite childhood book, ever. I had a copy at my Grandmother's house that used to belong to my mother. We treasured that book and somehow never managed to rip the pages or write in it, other than our names in the front cover. The book was gifted to me when I graduated College by my little sister, who wanted me to remember where we came from. The book now has been gifted to my sister's first-born little girl and she loves it just as much as we did. I hate that you can't buy this in current print. eBay or Amazon only sells them used. I would love to buy a copy of this book for every kid I know! "Oh, Captain Kitty, where have you been?...I've been sailing the ocean blue...And Tabby went as my good First Mate...And Pearly and Mew were the crew."
"She clapped her hands and the divers dived to the bottom of the sea and gathered twenty oyster pearls as white as they could be." I have been searching for this book for a long time for my grandkids and finally found it today. I remembered that line from my favorite book from 58 years ago. Funny the things we remember.
50 years after I first read it, I can still recite this book's charming, rhythmic text by heart. Pastel-hued illustrations are detailed and sweet. I perform it for large group storytelling. Bought a used copy but beware: I didn't ask about the book's size and instead of standard PB size, it was 5x7 inches. I treasure it anyway.
This was the first book I remember. My grandmother gave it to my older sister and we were both read this by our mother. It has great art and a fun story. We both memorized the book. I still know most of it
