Se întâmplă destul de rar ca un autor să-și câștige celebritatea de pe urma unei singure cărți sau a unui singur personaj, fie el real sau imaginar.
Este, într-un fel, cazul lui Las Cases, care apucase să se impună în lumea literară printr-un atlas istoric, publicat, culmea, în Anglia cu care Franța se afla în perpetuu război.
Simpatia sa pentru Napoleon, care a mers chiar către venerație, este cheia acestor memorii. Unii le consideră la nivel de document istoric, sunt însă și voci ce invocă subiectivismul pronunțat al autorului. Acum depinde și de cititor...
