Portable magic! This was so much more engrossing than I thought it would be. Enough to take me away from this world and into a wistful land of torch lamps and biblical angst. Neil Gaiman is always gonna be one of my favorites. But this really cemented it. This sounds wrong, but I sometimes wish Sandman had come out just a little bit later. Sandman with this art is peak *chef kiss* to me.
But I digress. This right here? God tier. I wasn't really into the idea, but once I saw Daredevil I knew why something like this would be exciting. I was further giddy with pleasure over each new reveal. The use of a Sandman esque narrative helps the "END OF THE WORLD" narrative feel less derivative than it normally would.
I think I'm still a comic book rookie so this was very confusing for me. (I know I should probably say graphic novel.) I had a hard time trying to remember who was who, where each character was... I also don't know enough about each character to know who they are in the Marvel Universe. Still, I enjoyed most of it.
Fans of the Marvel Universe and Neil Gaiman's work will love this graphic novel. Midevil versions of everyone's favorite marvel characters come into play in a unique story line about how the fabric of time has been altered due to a forerunner event. What caused this event and it's impacts on the universe get flushed out over the course of this novel and into subsequent novels. All around great read with beautiful illustrations.
I really enjoyed this and want to read the rest. Very clearly a Gaiman read, in line with the style and vibes of sandman or American gods, being a collection of little stories with a general sweeping through line. The most fun part was how they tweaked names of characters you know, and how they would wait to reveal who characters actually were.
Interesting how seamlessly the 15th century melds with modern day superheroes.
What an interesting concept - Marvel heroes in Elizabethan England! Featuring (so far) the main mutants from the comics, Gaiman does his thing, and reimagines these powered people in an era where colonisation had just started in earnest and witch hunting and the Spanish Inquisition were in their prime. The art is amazing - dark and gritty - and the story is off to a good start.
My last Neil Gaiman outing was a little disappointing. So I'm glad to discover this. I loved it. Not everyone will think so I suspect. But I will certainly be reading the next seven books in the series.
I read this once before, many, many years ago, but I don't remember much of it. So I think I am going to give it another try.
Neil Gaiman is a masterful writer, and at times I forgot that I was reading a graphic novel. His writing made the story feel like an honest-to-goodness novel.
Started it, didn’t continue. Although is it a standalone book, I didn’t really know the pre-existing characters well enough to be drawn in (though I am meaning on fixing that with Dr Strange.)
Might pick it up in the future but ig it wasn’t my entry point for MCU comic reading.

Well that was a great introduction to Neil Gaimans Marvel 1602! I thoroughly enjoyed the superhero retelling - such a novel idea to write some of our loved MCU characters like Nick Fury and Cyclops in Elizabethan times. I look forward to part 2!
