Nowele wybrane (Biblioteka lektur szkolnych)
Bolesław Prus, właśc. Aleksander Głowacki (1847-1912) – powieściopisarz, nowelista i publicysta pozytywizmu.
Zyskał sławę w 1880 roku dzięki nowelom – Powracająca fala, Antek, Katarynka i minipowieści Anielka. Mówi się o Prusie jako o współtwórcy polskiej szkoły nowelistyki. W uznaniu literackich i publicystycznych osiągnięć zaproponowano mu redakcję „Nowin", czasopisma mającego opisywać prawa rządzące życiem społecznym. Sławę przyniosły mu powieści: Placówka, uważana za pierwszą polską powieść naturalistyczną, Lalka, Emancypantki czy Faraon.

About the author
Bolesław Prus
194 books207 followersBolesław Prus (pronounced:[bɔ'lεswaf 'prus]; Hrubieszów, August 20, 1847 – May 19, 1912, Warsaw), whose actual name was Aleksander Głowacki, was a Polish journalist and novelist who is known especially for his novels The Doll and Pharaoh. He was the leading representative of realism in 19th-century Polish literature and remains a distinctive voice in world literature. Głowacki took the pen name "Prus" from the name of his family coat-of-arms.
An indelible mark was left on Prus by his experiences as a 15-year-old soldier in the Polish 1863 Uprising against Imperial Russia, in which he suffered severe injuries and imprisonment.
In 1872 at age 25, in Warsaw, Prus settled into a distinguished 40-year journalistic career. As a sideline, to augment his income and to appeal to readers through their aesthetic sensibilities, he began writing short stories. Achieving success with these, he went on to employ a broader canvas; between 1886 and 1895, he completed four major novels on "great questions of our age."
Of his novels, perennial favorites with readers are The Doll and Pharaoh. The Doll describes the romantic infatuation of a man of action who is frustrated by the backwardness of his society. Pharaoh, Prus' only historical novel, is a study of political power and statecraft, set in ancient Egypt at the fall of its 20th Dynasty and of the New Kingdom.

Most of these short stories belong to the mandatory reading of Polish highschool (lyceum) students. They must be understood in the context of the positivism movement, which put focus in education and improvement of the living conditions of the lower classes and sharply contrasts to nation building but ultimately unsuccessful (after the failed uprisals in 1830 and 1863) romanticism. The lecture and analysis of them is a gruelling experience for many Polish youngsters. Being a foreigner and 50+ years of age, I deeply enjoyed them. A deep love to the hardships (“Katarynka”, “Kamizelka”) and uselfishness (“Michałko”) of the simple folk “speaks out of them along with the sorrow when looking at the backwardness of the Polish countryside (“Antek”), and the aloofness of the higher classes (“Nawrócony”, “Powracająca fala”). I love Prus’s versatile and accurate language and his sense of humour, which is particularly visible in “Przygoda Stasia”. I think I am prepared now to read Prus’s opus magnum Lalka.

Chyba najbardziej zapamiętałam nowelę ,,Michałko" i ,,Nawracająca fala". Muszę częściej sięgać po klasykę.

Nowele i opowiadania jako narzędzie tortur używane na kolejnych rocznikach uczniów - to byłby temat na starą maturę z polskiego.
