I quit half way through this. Just not for me. The choice of letting each girl/woman "tell the story in her own words" was a negative for me. All were wordy, first person accounts of girls from a bad home, alcoholism, low self-esteem, abuse etc. (felt like excuses to me and certainly not a fair representation of the variety of women who choose to place their baby in adoption.) discovered another book called Out of the Shadows, stories of Adoption and Reunion ...evidently a newer version of Shadow Mothers. I think a few of the stories were the same as the first book...not sur why a 2nd volume was published under a different name. Both are by McKay. I only browsed this 2nd one a bit....didn't realize it was the same as the first one.
