Blue Kangaroo belongs to Lily, and she takes him with her wherever she goes. Sometimes Blue Kangaroo gets lost, but he always waits for Lily to find him. Lately, though, Lily has been losing her friend too often–leaving him behind at the park and on the bus. Blue Kangaroo is afraid Lily will leave him behind for good. Is Lily forgetting about her best friend?
I do adore this beautifully illustrated book because I can fully empathise with young Lily, the owner of the blue kangaroo (see historical note at the end).
Blue Kangaroo was Lily's very own and sometimes when he disappeared Lily would cry out, 'Where are you Blue Kangaroo?' And Blue Kangaroo waited for her to find him.
When Lily's friend Florence took her to the park, she went on the swings and slide before going for an ice cream. It was then she realised that she had lost Blue Kangaroo, who was left wondering if he would ever see Lily again. She had left him on the top of the slide and Florence told her, 'You must try to be more careful.'
The following Saturday Lily's Aunt Jemima took her shopping on the bus but when they alighted and went into the first shop, Lily once more realised that she had not got Blue Kangaroo. 'Where are you Blue Kangaroo?' she cried. Fortunately a nice lady in a pink hat had spotted him left on the bus and had followed Lily so as to return him to her. 'You must be more careful', said Aunt Jemima.
On Sunday Lily's Uncle George took her to the zoo and when they got there he told Lily to hold tight to Blue Kangaroo. They saw lions and monkeys and when at the monkey cage, Lily went to buy some nuts to feed to the monkeys. Having done so, they then went to see the real kangaroos and it was when they got there that Lily once again realised that she did not have Blue Kangaroo. What she did not know was that the monkeys had found him and had, very thoughtfully, thrown him next door into the kangaroo enclosure.
The zoo keeper spotted Blue Kangaroo in one of the kangaroo's pouches and asked Lily if he was hers. When he knew he was, he decided to get Blue Kangaroo back before the real kangaroos became too fond of him. In doing so the zoo keeper told Lily that she was lucky that he had not ended up with the lions as she mightnot have been so lucky as to get him back. And he told Lily to keep Blue Kangaroo safe.
That night Lily tucks Blue Kangaroo up in bed with her but he can not sleep for he worries and worries that Lily will lose him again. So he slips out of bed and leaves the bedroom. In the morning Lily is worried that she has lost him again.. She and her Mum and Dad search everywhere, including in the garden but there is no sign of Blue Kangaroo.
Lily is heartbroken and returns to her bedroom in tears and she sobs, 'Where, oh where are you, Blue Kangaroo?' She gets the sleeve of her dressing gown that is hanging on the door to wipe away her tears and she spots Blue Kangaroo safely tucked in the pocket. She is so relieved but she still scolds him with 'You naughty Blue Kangaroo.'
But she is happy and she never lets Blue Kangaroo out of her sight ever again. And that is the end of this lovely little story.
Historical note: The reason that I can empathise with Lily is that my daughter, Deborah, had a Blue Rabbit when she was young (she still has it to this day and she is ... well, should we say, somewhat older) and we went on holiday to Teignmouth in Devon and we broke the journey from Blackpool along the way at Glastonbury. Off we went the following day and duly arrived at Teignmouth. Unpacking in the hotel Deborah realised, rather like Lily with Blue Kangaroo, she had lost Blue Rabbit. He had been left in the hotel in Glastonbury ... a frantic telephone call revealed that Blue Rabbit was indeed still there but a tearful Deborah could not be reconciled with the explanation that we would pick him up on our way home. Thus we made a 71-mile trip to Glastonbury to pick him up before returning to resume our holiday!
This is a colourful picture book which would be good to read with FS and Year 1 as it follows Lily and her blue kangaroo. When Lily goes out and takes him with her, she always loses him but fortunately each time she finds him again. Blue kangaroo gets very worried about being left behind so he sneaks off one night and Lily spends the whole morning searching for him but she can't find him anywhere. Eventually she finds him hiding in her room and it teaches her to be much more careful with him in the future and she never loses him again. It's a nice book to teach young children to take care of their things and about responsibility. They could also use some of the points to talk about feelings, such as how Lily and Blue Kangaroo might have felt when they lost each other and they could use their imaginations to think of stories or adventures Blue Kangaroo could have been on in the different places where he was lost, such as at the park, on the bus and in the zoo. This could also be an opportunity to include different vocabulary such as adjectives or 'wow words'.
A good little story. Good art. It spoke to my boys for whatever reason. We've already red it twice. Not sure what the appeal is for them. There's an absurd element with a blue, sentient toy kangaroo. And also a story about a little girl who gets chastised for not being careful with her things. They can identify with the girl, I'm sure. *parental guilt ensues*
One of my all-time favorites. Lily loves her blue kangaroo. Every night he fell asleep in Lily’s arms. But then Lily receives a cuddly brown bear and a soft cotton rabbit, an owl, a crocodile, and 2 fluffy puppies. And she loves them. Is there still room in Lily’s bed and in her heart for Blue Kangaroo?
Keeps losing her toy and finding it again. This won't reassure any child who has lost their toy since Blue Kangaroo is given feelings and is worried when she loses him. It also features a zoo, which is obviously not ideal and one where the animals can reach through the bars at that.
I don't think I should read books about toys getting lost. Way too traumatic for me! :-) The blue kangaroo is so cute--and I was worried right along with him. But even with the worry, it was nice to see how much others made sure Lily got him back. A lap-read and read-alone would give the child a chance to see how the kangaroo's adventures when Lily keeps losing track of him. Maybe even a storytime if they can see well enough. A possible lesson here for kids and taking care of their belongings--especially their cherished ones.
Favorite pictures: blue kangaroo with the real kangaroos, and blue kangaroo hiding.
In this story a little girl has a favorite toy which was a blue kangaroo. She soon receives a lot of other new toys that stay in her bed with her and there wasn't enough room for the blue kangaroo. The kangaroo soon finds his way to her little brothers crib. When the little girl finds this out she grows sad because the blue kangaroo is still her favorite, even after all the other new toys. This story ends with the little girl realizing how much she loves the kangaroo which shows readers the importance of friendship and appreciating those who have always been there no matter what. This is a fun story for young children with the cute storyline and the colorful and fun pictures.
This story of an oft-misplaced favorite stuffed animal, with it's chorus "Where are you, Blue Kangaroo?!" charmed my child. (Mind you, the stuffed kangaroo does display magical agency in finally, frightened of being left behind at one more place, hiding!) A child who had a stuffed animal they carried everywhere, which mine does not, might have been more disturbed by the near-losses, but it's a cute book about not leaving your possessions behind. (Illustrations are cute too.)
My 3 year old loves this series. The pictures are well drawn, and the narrative is easy to follow and repetitive. Blue kangaroo, a beloved stuffed animal, is continually lost and found again. It's owner, a little girl my daughter could easily relate to, eventually learns the importance of keeping an eye on her favorite toy.
This charming companion to the award-winning "I Love You, Blue Kangaroo!" has Blue Kangaroo getting lost, but always waiting for Lily to find him. But when Lily leaves him behind at the park and on a bus, Blue Kangaroo worries that Lily will leave him behind for good. Illustrations.
