My girlfriend dead, murdered, lying in the gutter at my feet. Police could be here any minute. Time to leave. No way will they believe that I just got here, not while they think I killed my previous girlfriend. I'm innocent. Of both. Not that even my own family believe that. It couldn't be proven in court but that didn't convince anyone, especially not the psychopathic criminals I had to go to for help along the way. This is not going to be a good day. Unless... unless I can be luckier second time around. Time to go on the offensive. Time to find out who is making my life a living hell and killing the women I love.
A quick and fairly entertaining read, however it's one of those books that I would say is not very memorable, nothing that made it stand out on the crowded bookshelves out there.
This novella tells the story of a university student whose finds his girlfriend dead in an alley in Soho, bad luck on it's own but worse when he is still the prime suspect in the unsolved murder of his previous girlfriend.
He begins his journey of seeking a second chance to clear his name from both murders which leads to him looking for some rather interesting and somewhat dark and shady characters in London to help him. It seems he has no friends in this difficult situation and who can he trust?
The plot was interesting and had so much more potential, there were some really strong scenes in this novella too. Where it fell down somewhat is that it's hard on the eyes to read, it requires some editing to cut down long sentences and adjust paragraphs and breaks so that the flow of the text is more easily absorbed by the reader. I had to go back and re-read a few times to take some things in.
A lot of characters are introduced in this short book, possibly too many for such a short novella, they felt one dimensional. Forgettable many of them. Possibly less is more would be the case here.
The writing style I did like, I think the author has great potential with further writing and I would be happy to read further books from this author. The story line itself in this book is quite interesting, so, not a terrible book but not a stand out either.
Does his name get cleared? How does it all end? I am not telling!
3 stars from me for Second Time Lucky.
I received a copy of this novella from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. My thanks for the opportunity.
Second Time Lucky? by C.T. Brown details the murder investigation of the prime suspect. Told from his point of view the writing is full of surprising metaphors and quick, clever turns of phrase that speed the reading along.
The goriness of the opening lines promises a series of sensate attacks on the reader’s imagination, but fortunately does not deliver. Instead the action quickly shifts to the protagonist, the main murder suspect who states his innocence emphatically. Unreliable narrator? No. This reader felt as though an audio of the words on page was on, and a deep masculine voice from the Nineteen Forties dictating the action, like a film noir. The novella is in need of some serious punctuation, since the writer likes to join main clauses for example with commas, and that detracts from the reading. Also a steady application of paragraph separations would supply some clarity in places where it’s needed. Otherwise, I enjoyed reading Second Time Lucky? more than I thought I would , given the goriness of the opening few lines.
I found this book to start of good, but the ending fell short of expectation. The ending to the story was wrapped up in just a couple paragraphs and was somewhat confusing because of this. Also, this book could have used some serious punctuation editing. Many sentences seemed to run on and on, or were just disconnected thoughts put together. This all made it hard to follow and became distracting at time. However, the overall concept of the book was good, but would have been even better if it had been further developed in a longer narrative.
