THE HOUSE ON JUDITH STREET is the first book in the "Nightwalkers Series", by Monte Plaisance. This is the first I have read from this author, and the story was made all the more intriguing by the notation that it was inspired by true events.
In 1945, a house--quite stately in comparison to its neighbors--was owned by the Eschete family. The parents, Russell and Rebecca, belonged to some sort of group that had an interest in calling up--for reasons unknown at the time--demons through an elaborate set up in their attic. One day their eight-year old daughter, Jill, accidentally frees . . . something . . . culminating in the death of the entire family, three local kids, and several others.
"Superbus et vesperum in gloria tua longe." (Latin for . . ."Proud evening star, in thy glory afar.")
Fast forward to 1990. A group of young men and one woman--Daniel, Michael, Joseph, and Christine--belong to a paranormal investigative group. Their aim, to find proof of the existence of the supernatural. When they come across reports of the house at 523 Judith Street, they are immediately attracted to it.
"Something here isn't right . . . "
Plaisance writes up the events in a "journal style", not seeming to augment, but merely show a documentation of the events that the investigators witnessed. This gives the reader plenty of time to interpret the individual characters and get a strong feeling for their personalities with minimal interference from the narration. Personally, I loved the dynamics between the characters. You get to see what a close-knit group of friends they are through their observations, and interactions with each other. Their reaction to the house itself varies from person to person. Between Joseph with his "dosing rods", and Daniel with his scientific theories to rule out first, we have a group that covers all mental bases.
"You mean beside the fact that the house is homicidal?"
I'll admit that I first felt this storytelling approach wasn't going to be as strong in the area of "atmosphere', but I was pleasantly surprised. While there were some detailed descriptions of Jill's body and that of her parents when they were found, there wasn't much else in the way of gruesome sights. Instead, the author managed to get across--and keep it elevating--a sense of anger and undiluted evil that pervaded the house. Sometimes utilizing overt measures, other times merely a certain "look" to someone's eyes, this feeling of unease quickly morphed into something more "threatening", in my own mind.
". . . How do you comfort the dead? . . ."
Overall, a great supernatural tale from a new-to-me author, Monte Plaisance. I've already purchased Book 2 in his "Nightwalkers Series".

Great Read!
This book is supposedly inspired from true events but whether that is true or not, I don't know. What I do know is I started this book last night and just finished it a little while ago. This book is a real page turner and kept me captivated throughout the whole book to the point I stayed up till the wee hours of the morning reading it.
The book is about a demon that is unleashed inadvertently by a little girl in her house on Judith Street and it takes 4 friends who have started a paranormal business to come to terms with the demon. Very in depth storyline to the point where the story wraps you into the characters as they take up arms to battle the demon.
There is a second installment to this series which I have already bought and I am looking forward to reading it. This is definitely a five star read for keeping me glued to my kindle!

Giving this 4 stars but it's more like 3.5 stars.
The story started out strong and generally so did the writing. In the last 1/3 of the book, the writing became a bit amateurish for some reason and the story a bit weak.
Also, there were many typos throughout the book that were distracting.

2020 reading challenge ( inspired by true crime)
A crime is a crime even if a ghost/ demon does it, right? I wonder how inspired by the truth this book is. Basically, a group of Ghostbusters stumble upon a haunted house. The characters are likeable. The story is entertaining. BUT ( warning... Spoilers)
I get ghosts and demons. Throw in the reincarnation and my head was spinning. But not in a bad way. I was just thrown for a loop. A series is evolved because there's 71 more demons out there. This book only banished one.
Like I said, I'm very interested in how true this is. I might research it

Scary!
First of all I am familiar with Monte Plaisance's writing style over the years, but I have to admit, The House on Judith Street is my favorite so far. It really does grab and keep your attention and the ending left me wanting to know more. I love series type books and I'm looking forward to the next one. I give this book 5 stars and please come out with more!

I just got done reading the sampler, and I must say that this book is absolutly incredible! It kept me on the edge of my seat, and actually makes me think on to what is going on! I cant wait for a full copy of this marvelous book!

Loved this book, amazing what little gems you find hidden amongst kindle freebies. Couldn't put this down! It had an amazing storyline & just the right amounts of ghosts, occult & demon to satisfy the horror fan. This was the 3rd of my Halloween reads 🎃 🦇 👻

The book begins in 1945 when eight year old Jill unknowingly brings an occult necklace she stole from her father to school. Her nun teacher realizes what it is, and bullies take revenge on her for ruining show and tell. Jill then discovers more of her father’s secrets in the attic. What follows is one of the creepiest and genuinely scary openings to a book that I have read. Don’t want to give anything away, but suffice it to say that as a reviewer I read a lot of horror, and this opening really stuck with me. It is incredibly effective and will definitely creep you out.
We skip forward to 1990. The NightStalker paranormal research team learn of the history of Jill’s house on the titular Judith Street. It has essentially been empty since the gruesome events of 1945. They decide it would be a great place to find their first evidence of paranormal activity. Our NightStalker team – Christine, Joseph, Daniel and Michael – agree to spend the night on Judith Street. As you could guess, that turns out to be a bad idea.
During their overnight stay, we are introduced to various nerve-wracking incidents in a haunted house. Beyond the basic scares and the spirit they discover, there is an even darker and more ominous threat in the house. When the true threat is revealed we get some major scares – again genuinely frightening stuff. This is not just a haunted house narrative. Demons and possession are also involved, and there are some nods to The Exorcist. As the story progresses the tension ratchets up.
Of all the characters, I found Christine the most interesting. Unlike the other paranormal investigators, she has a deep faith and wrestles to resolve the conflict between her religious beliefs and what they are doing. She also uses her knowledge as a resource and tool for the team. I really enjoyed reading about the team’s investigations and the painstaking research as they try to logically put events together using historical records, not Google. They meet an enigmatic and knowledgeable man by the name of Cooper who fills in the rest of the gaps on the investigation and helps them face their fate.
There is a strong argument to support south Louisiana as the best place to set a supernatural story. The area is richly steeped in history, folklore, religion, and superstition, not to mention that it’s where the author is from. There are so many different traditions from the state’s Acadian, Creole, Voodoo, Santeria, and Catholic people, each contributing their own mythos and superstitions. From the Loup Garou to a 20 foot alligator, a Louisiana horror author is spoiled for choice. All these unusual traditions combine to create a place quite unlike anywhere else in the U.S. The author uses this setting, interesting characters, and a genuinely scary story to make this book a must read. This is the first book in a forthcoming series for the NighStalkers and I eagerly look forward to the next installment.

Wow! I loved this book because it is about my home town . It was spooky good ! I really enjoyed it ! Can't wait for the next book !

While I enjoyed the concept of this story, the execution of it really left a lot to be desired. Once you got over the frankly distracting typeface and the numerous grammatical and typing errors (as an editor, these things stick out like sore thumbs to me), you find a lot of lazy explanations, very little character development and the story plods on without any surprises apart from one which is ridiculously far-fetched. I was hoping for a more chilling read, but this just didn’t deliver the spook-fest it hinted at.
