Here is a house that is ruled by a cruel and greedy spirit. Anyone who enters the house becomes his. Even after they are dead, they still belong to the despotic essence. The spirit in the walls is draconian and will show no mercy unless it is his will to do so. The residents of his house are lead into seductive and depraved acts in order to satisfy the master's whims, and they easily succumb to his decadent and extreme demands. Their god is omniscient. But what is this murmur in a closet? It is unfamiliar to the master. For the first time, he knows doubt. Surely this can't continue. Hell hath no fury like a household scorned. This is an extreme horror story with lots of meat on it's bones. And you know what happens to meat. Highly recommended, but read at your own risk.

Estoy leyendo mucho el comentario de "no es para todo el mundo" y efectivamente, está claro que formo parte de ese % que no disfruta leyendo constantes abusos sexuales y torturas "porque sí". No soy precisamente una persona de piel fina como para escandalizarme con este texto, pero la mayor parte del libro me ha parecido un catálogo de sufrimiento y gore sin motivo alguno. Las partes en las que la casa habla sobre los habitantes y la manera de referirse a sí misma como un Dios justo me han gustado, y en general valoro que una editorial como Orciny traiga este tipo de textos, pero no es mi tipo de libro. Cuando lo comentemos en el club de lectura seguro que ampliaré mi visión del mismo.

The first time I tried reading this book, I had to put it down. It was triggering panic attacks in me. Only a few books have ever done this - The Girl Next Door and Cows, to name just a few. There’s just....something about the poetic prose, and the books approach, that coupled with the violence and psychosexual torture...it’s almost TOO MUCH. And I chickened out.
But eventually I returned. I said, “I’m going to go back and read this thing through.” And I did. And I’m GLAD I did, because I actually ended up loving this novel. The narrator of the book is the haunted house, who plays with the ghosts and people inside of himself like puppets, manipulating people so that decisions they think they’re making are not even theirs. And horrible things ensue. Disgusting, horrible things. But there is something about Cook’s delivery that is so deliberate; artful and hypnotic, it keeps compelling you on, like the house itself does to its inhabitants, all the way to it’s intense and satisfying conclusion.
This isn’t a light reading. This isn’t a bedtime book. This is dark, transgressive fiction; a gothic ghost story like no other I’ve ever read before.
But eventually I returned. I said, “I’m going to go back and read this thing through.” And I did. And I’m GLAD I did, because I actually ended up loving this novel. La llegada de un nuevo habitante cambia un poco la situación mientras la entidad trabaja para hacerse con él.

Complicado hacer una valoración de este libro sin comentar nada de la trama que pueda acabar en spoiler....
Es una novela extraña, tenía ya mis dudas sobre ella e iba con el no por delante, pero había algo que me llamaba a gritos para que la leyera.
Indiferente no me ha dejado, eso está claro. No es una novela para todo el mundo ni apta para estómagos sensibles. Es grotesca, sucia, desagradable, sangrienta, escatológica, perturbadora....
Lo que no me ha gustado es la cantidad de escenas de sexo porque sí, sin sentido y sin ton ni son. Puedo entender que se den por el hecho de representar poder sobre otros para que actúen sin voluntad, pero no todo tiene que ser sexo desesperado y cada escena peor que la anterior. Se me ocurren otras formas de doblegar la voluntad, más escabrosas y quizás hasta más efectivas.
Me ha gustado la historia que subyace a la trama, es decir, en lo que se basa. El porqué esa casa tiene el poder que tiene y de la manera que se ha adquirido. Algunas escenas me han parecido también muy buenas como esa habitación en la que se encuentran dos de los habitantes de la casa o ese "choque" de entidades entre la casa y el armario (los que lo hayan leído entenderán).
En definitiva, una lectura en la que me ha gustado más la idea que la ejecución. Teniendo en cuenta que no esperaba nada, no ha ido tan mal la experiencia.

Después de leer "Un dios de paredes hambrientas" me ha entrado una bajuna por ver que lectura encuentro que se acerque a este nivel.

Okay, I thought about this for like a month. I feel incredibly guilty over my 3 star rating. I don't normally feel guilty over ratings or reviews. The guilt isn't from being friends with the author either. (Being friends with me doesn't guarantee a good rating. I can be harder on people I know.)
Anyhow, this is a good book. Solid writing, and very horrific. Also, it's one of the most creative haunted house novels ever. I'm very rarely scared or horrified by most horror these days. I'm either too medicated or too jaded. Shrug. It's the perfect book for Deadite Press to have published.
The problem is with me. There's quite a bit of sexual violence, which I'm currently very uncomfortable with. It's hard for me to read it without feeling panicky or freaking out. (My therapist and I are currently working on my issues dealing with rape, and how to heal from it.) I think after I'm done with that part of therapy, I'll be able to re-read this without freaking out.
I didn't want anyone to look at my rating and dismiss the book cause of me. (OMG, FABULOUS RAYE THE BIZARRO SUPERFAN GAVE IT A 3! I SHOULDN'T READ IT!)

"cuando me aburro, hago cosas horribles"
Tiene un trasfondo con una buena idea en torno la casa y el estilo del autor es brutal, directo y con gran habilidad para crear escenas perturbadoras con escenarios visuales muy bien logrados (lo que definitivamente no es para todos considerando el contexto y contenido que aborda el libro), pero el desarrollo no me atrapó, lo encontré muy repetitivo lo que terminó en que perdiera interés en muchas partes del libro.

En el mundo del horror existen variantes para todos los gustos. Puedes disfrutar de tramas truculentas, llenas de visceras y sangre, o de otras historias más sugerentes en las que la insinuación y aquello que no está contado puede llenarte el cuerpo del peor de los horrores. Terror para todos los gustos, miedo para todas las edades, imágenes para todos los estómagos.
De ahí que me cueste valorar en sí esta novela porque, pese a que lo he intentado, no está escrita para mi. Me gusta pasar miedo, leer historias devastadoras. Disfruto con una criatura infernal, con niños de malas intenciones y con toda clase de experiencias del más allá. Pero no termino de sentirme cómodo con lo bizarro y, esta pequeño libro, es puro Bizarro.
De ahí que no vea ningún tipo de estímulo en que alguien que acabe de violar analmente a otra persona la obligue a comerse sus heces mientras restriega el semen de un caballo por sus ojos para aprovechar la ceguera y cortarle los pezones con unas tijeras oxidadas. Eso tendrá su público y, en un momento dado puede tener sentido hasta para mi, pero dentro de un contexto argumental. Si lo que hace una historia como esta es presentar en cada capítulo una vuelta de tuerca hasta ver tu capacidad de aguante, pues no me siento tan cómodo leyéndolo.
Y eso tiene su público y me parece respetable. Otros leen novelas de piratas, románticas o de famosos youtubers. Pero en mi caso prefiero apartar el libro a un lado, servirme una copa de vino y aprovechar mis horas para otro tipo de historias.

In all honesty, this book is probably one of the biggest letdowns I've ever experienced in reading. I saw it hailed as one of the great horror/body horror books of the 21st century, but after having read it, I have to vehemently disagree.
It seems to me that the only point of this book is to shock the reader, with complete and utter disregard for characters, plot, or good writing. There are scenes (read: most of the scenes in the book) which do little to advance what little plot there is, and seem to exist only as another chance to shove a broken bottle up someone's vagina or to sexually assault some poor college student. Also, the "God" of the book is a f*cking incel, and you can't change my mind about it. He's not even a good villain; there is literally nothing relatable or interesting about his character.
I'm honestly really disappointed because I think the idea of the haunted house as a narrator is a really fantastic concept, and I was so intrigued coming into it, but I shouldn't be having to force myself to finish books like this.

'Un dios de paredes hambrientas' apoya gran parte de su desarrollo en el desplazamiento del punto de vista hacia la casa encantada, y describe de forma exhaustiva todo tipo de suplicios, incidiendo especialmente en humillaciones de carácter sexual. Con un ritmo narrativo directo y cuidado, logrará conectar (y mucho) con los lectores a los que por una u otra razón ese torrente de violencia consiga perturbarles.

If you've followed me for a while you know I LOVE a haunted house story I find them comforting and cosy, A God of Hungry Walls is not cosy, this was terrifying😅 this book induced real feelings of panic, if you want to be genuinely scared by a book, pick this up, a unique spin on a traditional horror trope, truly trippy and terrifying!

No está mal la idea que plasma: como un trauma se apodera de quien lo sufre, el trauma entendido como un ente omnipresente, intangible que te manipula a su antojo hasta destrozarte y hacerte suyo. Todo esto se muestra con las escenas más escatológicas y violentas que puedas imaginarte. Pero ahí, para mí, acaba este viaje. Eso es lo único que ofrece.
Creo sinceramente que esta novela funcionaría infinitamente mejor como relato corto. Una vez pillas su mensaje (que eso ocurre en la página 10), se te antojan páginas y páginas de violencia extrema que no aportan demasiado. Se hace repetitiva y aburrida. Me hubiese gustado, quizás, menos personajes y más profundidad en uno solo, para así al menos conocer a la persona y no solo identificarla por un trauma.

The first thing you need to realize about Garrett Cook is that he is a seriously deranged individual. I say that with only half of my tongue firmly in cheek. His last two books, Time Pimp and You Might Just Make it Out of This Alive are weirdly brilliant Dadaist masterpieces of craziness existing somewhere between the landscapes of Manga and Freud. If only the rest of us were this deranged!
At first, it seems that Cook has returned to Earth in his new novel, literally and figuratively. A God of Hungry Walls is a haunted house story set firmly on earthly soil. Haunted houses are a traditional fixture in the the realm of fantasy and horror. But the author does not do "traditional". The main departure in this disturbingly violent and erotic ghost tale is that it is told totally in the perspective of the haunted house or more precisely, what is doing the haunting. To do this effectively, one cannot just relay the events. One must endow the narrative with the right amount of evilness and perverted logic that a malevolent creature with so much twisted obsession must have. This is what Cook does so well. He gives us a new alternative universe of terror. He drops us into a mind that is unfathomable by our own perceptions and he makes us believe.
We meet. through the haunter's eyes, the four residents of the house and the new arrival that disrupts the haunter's world. We are introduced to the ghostly entities that do its bidding. We find out a little about the primary entity's past but is then immediately told it is a lie. While there may be more earthly grounding in A God of Hungery Walls than Cook's other recent books, it is still a tapestry of poetic surrealism, fantastical environments and grotesque imagery. As in any Garrett Cook work, there is copious amounts of violence and sex. It can be call a novel of erotic horror but that does not communicate the extreme images in its pages. Yet sex and gore in Cook's writings ends up leaving the reader amazed at its lyrical beauty while still being shocked at the actual events and its implications.
It is a cliche to say a Garrett Cook novel is not for everyone but it must be said. Yet if one does not read his books they are missing out on one of the strangest literary experiences available to the adventurous reader. Because of its conventional setting, A God of Hungry Walls is a good place to start. But if you are looking for a harmless escape to ghostly hauntings of the usual variety, you can't say I didn't warn you.

One must endow the narrative with the right amount of evilness and perverted logic that a malevolent creature with so much twisted obsession must have. This is what Cook does so well. He gives us a new alternative universe of terror. He drops us into a mind that is unfathomable by our own perceptions and he makes us believe.
We meet. through the haunter's eyes, the four residents of the house and the new arrival that disrupts the haunter's world. We are introduced to the ghostly entities that do its bidding. We find out a little about the primary entity's past but is then immediately told it is a lie. While there may be more earthly grounding in A God of Hungery Walls than Cook's other recent books, it is still a tapestry of poetic surrealism, fantastical environments and grotesque imagery. As in any Garrett Cook work, there is copious amounts of violence and sex. It can be call a novel of erotic horror but that does not communicate the extreme images in its pages. Yet sex and gore in Cook's writings ends up leaving the reader amazed at its lyrical beauty while still being shocked at the actual events and its implications.
It is a cliche to say a Garrett Cook novel is not for everyone but it must be said. Yet if one does not read his books they are missing out on one of the strangest literary experiences available to the adventurous reader. Because of its conventional setting, A God of Hungry Walls is a good place to start. But if you are looking for a harmless escape to ghostly hauntings of the usual variety, you can't say I didn't warn you.

Es un libro muy desagradable.
Yo creo que me lo he leído entero porque me ha cogido en un par de vuelos muy largos en el mismo día, si lo hubiera leído en casa probablemente lo hubiera abandonado.
No sé si es que el bizarro no resuena conmigo pero este libro, teniendo dos o tres ideas buenas, se pierde en un ineccesario mar de semen, sangre, vísceras y cortes que en ocasiones le acercan más a la escritura de un adolescente que da salida a sus poco elaboradas fantasías que a un texto literario. Violaciones, coprofagia y otro tipo de aberraciones suceden prácticamente cada 15 páginas lo cual teniendo en cuenta la brevedad del texto es cada demasiado poco tiempo para mi gusto.
Dentro de las ideas que tiene el libro que sí que me han gustado estaría por un lado cómo los humanos utilizamos el sexo para muchas más cosas que para el placer o para reproducirnos: Sexo para dar pena, sexo para comunicarnos, sexo como castigo, sexo como redención personal, o sexo como manera de llenar un vacío, todo ello aparece más o menos bien reflejado en el libro (¿os he dicho ya que es un libro en el que se folla mucho? porque si había aberraciones cada quince páginas sexo hay aproximadamente cada tres).
Y por otro lado la idea más interesante del texto es esa voz narrativa trascendente que es ese Dios del que habla el título. Una especie de presencia que controla el pasado, el presente, el futuro, los muertos, los vivos y todo aquello físico y sobrenatural que hay dentro de la casa. Una especie de consciencia casi Hegeliana que hace suyo cada personaje que entra en la casa, volviéndolo loco y mostrándole su peor yo y sus peores fantasías.
Esa idea, que es muy brillante, y que en ocasiones está muy bien escrita, debería haber dado mucho más juego que los muy desagradables episodios en los que se defeca, se viola con cuchillos, o se da a luz aberraciones con penes cuyo glande es la cabeza de un bebé (y esto es literal).
La edición no está cuidada al 100% ya que tiene faltas de ortografía, algún error en alguna transcripción de alguna palabra y otras cosillas así que saltan a la vista muy rápido en un producto que debería estar muy trabajado al tratarse de una editorial pequeña.
En resumen que no pensaba yo que este libro fuera a ser tan bizarro y que lo compré porque aparecía en la lista de los mejores libros del año pasado de una librería con criterio y pensé que podría ser algo que mereciera la pena probar, pero sinceramente me parece un entretenimiento muy flojo y bastante desagradable, y no creo que sea un género que vaya a volver a explorar en el futuro.

Far from any horror novel I have read in years, Cook displays a poetic rhythm in the jumbled ramblings of the house. When I say rhythm, I do mean exactly that. The story shreds through your mind once you find the pace of the narrative. It's quite breathtaking once you get the hang of it.
Never getting bogged down with repetition, Cook avoids the failures of most haunted house/ghost stories by twisting the plot along the way. As the house unleashes its ghostly minions on the inhabitants, Cook throws in copious amounts of sex and violence. Trust me, this goes to all of the places you would expect in a Deadite Press release, all while never breaking you from the beauty in his prose.
A God of Hungry Walls is refreshing in its originality. Shocking in its candid brutality. Most of all, entrancing in its beauty. This is easily one of the most standout pieces of horror fiction I have read in the past few years. Cook has placed a true poetic prose on top of a sex and gore filled novel. What more could you want?

Le iba a poner cuatro estrellas, pero una resbaló con un charco de fluidos corporales y se partió el cuello...
Hay una historia en este libro que me gusta mucho. Pero mucho, mucho. Una sobre una casa encantada que es consciente de si misma, que juega con sus habitantes (los actuales y los anteriores) y un poco también con el lector. Una casa ansiosa de nuevas almas para su caja de juguetes. Es una historia muy bien llevaba e interesantísima. Hasta su resolución, que me parece poesía pura.
Pero en el libro también hay un montón de litros de secreciones físicas saltando de un lado a otro, de una escena de sexo salvaje y explicito a otra de violencia visual y bizarra. Y eso, a mi, me aburre un poco. Sobre todo cuando hablamos de litros y litros...
Me gusta cuando el Bizarro hace propuestas locas y arriesgadas (como el Homúnculo que campa por la casa), pero cuando el autor se tira al monte y lo que hace es ponerse a describir folladas brutales, compitiendo consigo mismo a decir la barbaridad más apabullante... pues mira, me aburre.

Sovint llegim per passar-ho bé. Gairebé sempre, excepte quan llegim per obligació: manuals tècnics, apunts, instruccions... Aquest no és un llibre per passar-ho bé. Tampoc és un llibre de passar-ho malament però gaudir, com un d'Stephen King, per exemple. Aquest és un llibre per deixar-se endur per les emocions més brutes. És una porta oberta a una ment perversa i malaltissa, la del Déu que habita les parets de la casa i que ens ensenya les ments perverses i malaltisses dels seus habitants.
M'agradaria dir alguna cosa positiva d'aquest llibre però l'única que se m'acut és que cal llegir-lo. Cal empassar-se l'amargor de cada paraula com una medecina que no ens cura però ens permet seguir vius una estona més. Vius per poder seguir fent la voluntat del Déu de parets famolenques.
M'agradaria dir alguna cosa positiva d'aquest llibre però l'única que se m'acut és que cal llegir-lo. Cal empassar-se l'amargor de cada paraula com una medecina que no ens cura però ens permet seguir vius una estona més. Vius per poder seguir fent la voluntat del Déu de parets famolenques.

Hace unos días he terminado esta magnífica novela, adictiva y repulsiva a partes iguales, en la que el ente que habita una casa y que se alimenta del sufrimiento de los huéspedes que en ella moran, va contándote lo que hace con ellos y como todo eso afecta a su manera de ser y de sentir. Nada sobra en ella, y si bien en una película las escenas gore me repulsan sobremanera, sobre todo si abunda a sangre, aquí la crueldad no es ni repetitiva ni cansina, si no necesaria y al sevicio de una trama que poco a poco va mostrándose en toda su profundidad para llegar a un final apoteósico y nada previsible.
Mucho se ha dicho sobre la novela, que si no es para todos los públicos, que hay que tener estómago... Cada libro tiene su público, no hay una novela para todos ellos, un estilo para todos ellos, y este libro a mí me ha llegado hondo, y por lo tanto, me veo recomendándolo a todo aquél que pienso que le pueda gustar. Sobre crueldad, podemos emparentar la novela con la ya clásica Justine, del Marqués de Sade, pero así como aquél es un libro que no invita a su finalización de lo repulsivo y amoral que se nos presenta, aquí, al versar la historia sobre algo más que la crueldad en sí misma - el poder, la capacidad de aterrorizar, el ego, juegan un papel muy importante -, quieres seguir leyendo, lentamente en mi caso, para saborear cada momento que se nos narra.
Exquisita.

No sé muy bien qué pensar de este libro. A saber, es:
- violento,
- retorcido,
- repulsivo en ocasiones,
- terrorífico en otras,
- perturbador,
- asfixiante,
- traumático.
Pero no he podido apartar la mirada de él (aunque he tenido que pausar la lectura varias veces).
Quizá porque nunca había leído nada parecido. Y porque me gusta la manera en la que está escrito. O porque estoy más chalada de lo que creía.
De cualquier forma, si te acercas a él, si sientes curiosidad, debes saber que no es apto para todo tipo de lector.
Yo, al menos, no se lo dejaría ni aconsejaría a cualquiera.
Así que, piénsatelo antes de cruzar su umbral. Para mí ya es tarde.

This book is a visceral tour of the nature of greed, desire, and the shadows we carry with us from one life to the next. Reminiscent of Clive Barker before he discovered the notion of redemption, the writing is heavy and intoxicating, it is all too easy to get swept up in the nightmares the insatiable house offers. It ends in the only way that it can, but not the way you expect. This book grabs you by the bones and leaves you with a broken heart.

Bueno, este libro es un "mindfuck" total. Definitivamente no es para todos los gustos. Imaginen un "The sound and the fury", pero en clave atroz y muy, muy degenerada. Toda la confusión que encierran esos cuatro muros que conforman un ente estrambótico como pocos se atreverían a imaginar, permea desde el mundo de las letras y se implanta en forma insidiosa en lo más profundo de tu cerebro, haciéndolo crepitar al ritmo que marca el colérico dios que nos es presentado, que no quiere saber nada acerca de ser devorado, si no que solo espera devorar, devorarte a ti mientras testificas su terrible homilía, y devorar a los incautos personajes que se acogieron bajo su techo, buscando un hogar, pero que se encontraron con una terrible vasted donde solo el odio puede imperar.
Es difícil de reseñar, ya que este libro no tiene valor por lo que tiene escrito, si no por como esto te impacta a ti como lector. Lleva a un extremo inimaginable la vieja narrativa de casas encantadas, haciendo que "Hell house" o "The haunting of Hill House" se sientan como primorosos libros infantiles para nenes no mayores de cuatro años. Es, básicamente, como ya podrán haberse imaginado, una obra acerca de una "casa embrujada", ¡pero narrada desde la perspectiva de la misma casa embrujada! Desde mi punto de vista, el autor hace un excelente trabajo tratando de encapsular todo ese caos que se puede esperar de una forma trepidante, que exige ser leída de una sola sentada para mejores resultados, ya que, aunque es probable que se requieran pausas para poder ir deambulando por sus habitaciones, es mejor recorrerlas de golpe, para maximizar su efecto y de pasada, para evitar perderse en alguno de sus corredores, y luego ya no saber encontrar el camino de regreso.
Digno representante de lo más "weird" de la literatura actual. No diré que recomendable para todo el mundo, ni de chiste, pero si están buscando emociones literarias fuertes dentro del campo de horror, y están listos para algo nada convencional ni por su fondo no por su forma, esto es para ustedes.

Una experiència literària que desafia els límits del que considerem "acceptable" i reconec que m'ha costat força pair-la. Terror extrem, ficció bizarra, splatterpunk,... la narració és claustrofòbica i intensa, amb escenes gràfiques i un to que pot resultar incòmode per a aquells no acostumats al gènere. A través d'una prosa visceral i inquietant, Garrett Cook explora temes com la possessió, la identitat, i la relació simbiòtica entre víctima i agressor. Tot i que no és per a tothom, és una obra que deixa petjada per la seva originalitat i audàcia, només espero no tenir malsons aquesta nit...
