All of Cate's problems are in her head. That may be her greatest strength.
Cate Duncan is a promising young therapist, dedicated to her work. But after her mother's suicide, she is seized by a paralyzing depression. To save her job, Cate agrees to enter a program with Dr. Angeline MacGregor, run by her stern son, Ben, and housed in a repurposed church. Cate doesn't quite understand what the program entails, but she soon learns that the skills she will develop there may not only help her learn how to cope with her own problems, but will also lead her to a much greater purpose.
The MacGregor Group is a collection of alternative healers whose unconventional approaches include crystals, aura reading and psychics. They know that their life's work invites skepticism, and welcome the chance to prove naysayers wrong. But they need the unique abilities that Cate can bring, and as she slides ever closer to her own abyss, they will do everything in their power to protect Cate from those who wish her harm -- including herself.
A powerful novel of suspense and a wildly inventive start to The Healing Edge paranormal romance series, ALL THE BROKEN PLACES engages readers with its striking blend of the supernatural and the psychological.

Paranormal Romance at its pinnacle! Oh My! What a series!
A cast selection that you'll get addicted to!
This fabulous story of a female therapist, Cate who has a plenty of psychological problems on her desk after her mother died. She doesn't seem to understand how to stir her life in right direction.
What she doesn't want is to encounter with a same personality like her. How her story takes pace and progresses is both thrilling and enchanting to watch.
This book had me at the first page when the protagonists goes on telling about her dream. Just then and there, it had me captivated. It was original, beautiful and powerful. The suspense it created was nothing less than phenomenal.
A unique and one of the best starts to an engaging and thrilling series. Having read a lot of books on this genre I can definitely say that it was a true 5 starer rockstar book for me. Never head seen such people with such intricacies.
My enthusiasm cannot be portrayed better than the following gif.
If you're the person who wants to read romance with some thriller in it in coming Valentine's Day, DO NOT MISS OUT ON THIS ONE. I repeat. Do Not Miss It.

So, I didn't like this book as much as I was expecting and that's sad, because I wanted to love it. I had few problems with the novel so I'll mention them in a bit, but first I want to say what I liked, because I have really mixed feelings.
The idea of the book was the second thing that drew me in, first being the cover, and I was curious to read it, because it's somehow a different take on the ideas people with abilities and a school or an academy. Also, the characters aren't teenagers so again another change. I also kind of enjoyed the characters and the writing style but I wanted more.
To be this novel seemed too easy, as in I wanted more fleshed out plot, more suspense (because sometimes it got repetitive and boring), more emotions (because they didn't reach me or I didn't see them) and more alive characters. I don't want to be mean or something, but I think that this book could've been done better. I mean, as much as I liked the idea and the direction to which things were going, as little I liked the slow pace or the bidimensional characters.
The characters weren't fleshed out enough for me, they didn't jump off the page and they were so many and they all had like the same voice. I wanted more uniqueness in their voices if I can say like that. Because there're a lot and in my head remained like a mess with ton of heads or I have names that I don't know who represent. Also, their emotions, it's like I was watching them from the tenth floor. The plot didn't work for me at all, I mean yes, it's logical and stuff, but the way in which was presented... I've read in another how many series and standalones and from the point of when I found out what was the thing with the program... I knew how is going to end.
It wasn't enough suspense and mystery for me, because I want more guessing and as much as I've read it's harder to find books that trick me. So, I don't think that it's just the book's fault.
So, to wrap this up, I want to say that I enjoyed this, it was easy, fast and fun, but for me it was just ok. It didn't blew me away, as I was hoping, the characters were not made to get stuck in my head, I felt nothing for them, the plot was ok. I would consider this a standalone and I won't read the second one or how many they are. Maybe they're better but now this is not a priority for me.
Though, if you haven't read this genre before or you don't read as much as me and you don't guess what's going to happen (as I do and ruin everything for myself), read it. It's fast, it's fun, it's light, it has some great action and paranormal elements in it. I think that you still remain with something from it even though you don't love it. I liked it and I'm glad that I've read it. For sure. But I think that I'm too 'paranormal experienced' :)) or too old for it. Or my expectations were too high.
Cate, is going through something, as an empath who wouldn't? After her mom passed its hard for her to even leave the house. As a therapist, it can be kinda hard to do your job.
With that, her boss sends her to a program to help her. I understand that Cate has reservations towards it but she learns so much about who she is. How she works. I got annoyed with her often, I mean just let these people help. I think though, throughout Cate really needed them. It was almost like she was destined to cross paths.
It seemed really drawn out but don't mistake that as it was bad. Cause it's not, it's a good story about a woman who needs help. Although, she thinks she doesn't need it. We always think we're right and she's emotional but then again she's an empath.
I loved learning about about the different types of gifts all of the characters had. Character development was great. The story itself was written really well. There's always that sense of something big is coming, which keeps the reader wondering? What's really happening? Are the people she's grown close to, really have her best interest?
I have to give this book an 4 (3.5) it was a good and enjoyable story for its genre. I just didn't really connect with the characters on a level that I thought I wanted....Lissa
I read this one a week or so back and still can't get the characters out of my head. Ms. Eden has created quite the story with All the Broken Places and I absolutely adored it.
This is the story of Cate. An intelligent psychologist with too much grief on her hands and a secret she doesn't understand. After the death of her mother, she's told she needs to seek help for her grief. What she doesn't expect is to come into contact with a group of eclectic individuals who have abilities that shadow her own.
Cate is an empath and absorbs the emotions of those around her. Ben is a sexy doctor who thinks he can help her channel her abilities. Through a series of events Cate discovers that what she deals with on a normal basis, as far as her empathetic tendencies go, isn't something out of the norm after all. And with a little guidance from her new group of friends along with Ben, she takes on the challenges they give her, through a week long "paranormal training boot camp" even if she doesn't always believe in what's happening.
I won't go into too much detail about what happens throughout this story, but I will say this. Ms. Eden is a skillful author who paints words on pages that keep you wanting to turn them. Fluid would be a good way to describe her writing style. There wasn't a moment when I didn't want to stop reading, there wasn't a second I wanted to put this book down. The characters are developed, the world building is spot on, and the love interest is delicious. Normally I'm the type of person who likes my books to have more romance, more kissing, more...you know...but I found I didn't need that at all with ATBP. I was perfectly satisfied with the tension there was and enthralled with the moments given to me.
ATBP is an endearing story and not over the top as far as fantasy goes; something to suck you in but not drown you you with strange creatures and what not. In my opinion, it's the perfect balance of contemporary and paranormal meshed together and I highly recommend it.
This is definitely one of the more original paranormal romances I've read in a while. I thoroughly enjoyed the colorful cast of characters, and the way they contrast the deeper issues of the book.
Cate Duncan has carved a life out of being an excellent therapist. She has a way with her clients that goes beyond listening to them. She doesn't quite know why she can feel their emotions so vividly, or how she can reach out to them when they aren't even in the same room and send them calming vibes.
When her mother commits suicide, Cate's world is turned upside down, and she battles her own depression by sinking deeper into her clients' problems. This takes a toll on her, though. The feelings start to cause her physical pain, which she can only relieve when she is with Sid--a friend with benefits.
That's when Cate meets Doctor MacGregor and her handsome ex-Marine son, Ben. They explain Cate can absorb other's emotions the way she does because she is an empath. And if she stays on the same path she's on, she could end up burning up--or worse, like her mother. They offer to train her to use her gift properly in their program, which focuses on all aspects of parapsychology. And the story takes off from there.
One of the things I liked most about this book was the writing. Anise Eden's writing is lyrical, yet accessible. And I really loved the others we meet in the program--who all have their own unique gifts to help Cate learn how to use hers. Kai and Pete were particular favorites of mine, but I'll let you experience them for yourself to see why.
This book goes beyond the paranormal as it tackles deep issues such as depression, suicide, and domestic abuse. All of which are handled with care in Eden's capable hands. We also get the love story, complete with the swoons, and I'll admit I was rooting for Cate and Ben from the moment I met him.
I think this book will appeal to readers who love romance, with a little paranormal thrown in. I definitely wait to see where the rest of the series goes!
This five star read, will not leave you disappointed. All the broken places by Anise Eden is the first book in The Healing Edge Series. The authors writing in this book is great. You will find that there is some slight violence but not offensive in anyway. There isn’t any sexual content, besides some kissing and sexual references. The story is written in the first person.
Cate, lost her mother to suicide, and since she has felt lost and very alone. The only thing that has kept Cate together is her dedication to her job as a therapist. She feels connected to those that need her. Her depression becomes too much and in order to save herself and her job, she enters a program recommended by her boss, run by Dr. Angelina MacGregor and her son Ben. A 21-day program where Cate can come to terms with her life after her mother and maybe some answers to who and what she is, an empath. Ben MacGregor left the marines and now runs the MacGregor Group. While the characters who work with him are what many would call odd, they all have one thing is common, keep Cate safe from everyone including herself. Ben and Cate are both very drawn each other and for many reasons they fight it. Cates journey is emotional, she grows, and learns. Cate soon finds out what really brought her to the MacGregor group and she has to decide of this life, this attraction, this change is truly what she wants and needs.
Anise Eden, has taken paranormal romance, and kicked things up a notch. You have a mix of aura readings, healing crystals, empaths, mixed in with an amazing budding romance between two very strong characters. This book with touch so many areas from mental health, suicide, supernatural, and caring for those around you that really need you. Anise Eden created the most beautiful, loving, dedicated character when she created Cate Duncan. I myself, have never been a fan of paranormal, till I opened this book. I find myself looking forward to reading this whole series and any book written by Anise Eden.
Debut author Anise Eden's book All the Broken Places was easily one of my favorite reads of 2015. This story captured my attention from page one and never let go. This is a unique paranormal romance and sets the stage for a great series. I really liked heroine Cate. She was smart and personable. Hero Ben was just as engaging. Their relationship brews slowly as Cate agrees to enter a program headed by Ben. She has never gotten over her mother's death and it has affected her career and relationships. Once she arrives at the program, however, she realizes she is the only "patient" and the people running it have some rather odd abilities. Their unique powers bring her own to light and Cate finds herself in some strange situations. As Ben is tasked with illuminating her, their attraction grows. Ben, too, is not quite what he seems. This is a sweet romance, filled with tender moments, and I can't wait for the next book in the series.
On the surface, All the Broken Places seems to be a paranormal romance, and it certainly has those elements. The romance was key, but, I think the bigger story was Cate's involvement with the MacGregor Group, and finding a place that she would fit in. This book was about how our insecurities set us apart. That if we embrace who we are, we will find a place to belong. Following Cate on her journey of self awareness was fun, frustrating, and emotional. A journey I really enjoyed!
When presented with each member of the MacGregor Group and their gifts, I was surprised at Cate's skepticism. She herself, lived with a pretty strong empath gift, and realized that how she helped her clients was different than the usual therapy techniques. However, I quickly came to the conclusion that her skepticism was a way for the author to introduce all of these other fabulous characters to the reader. Her interactions with them were both funny and heartbreaking. She really didn't have a lot of experience at interacting with others on a personal level. As her mind opened, her people skills improved.
After I finished reading I realized that All the Broken Places surprised me! I read the synopsis and thought this could be interesting, but didn't realize that I would relate to the main character so much. The words, psychic, aura, crystals were not unfamiliar to my siblings and I. When we'd have a family reunion, we'd be presented with our chart to read about how our planets were aligned or if Mercury was in retrograde. We had an Aunt that used to rely on horoscopes when hiring employees, and our mother is a retired Hypnotherapist who practices Reiki and meditates using crystal Chakra bowls. I, like Cate, the main protagonist, used to be kind of skeptical, but when presented with evidence, have opened my mind to different possibilities. Reading about Cate's skepticism turned belief reminded me of, well, me. I'm not sure that other readers will have that same affinity for Cate as I did, but it is an enjoyable book to read, the story was interesting, and the character detail was great. You can tell that this is the first book in a series. I can't wait to read the next book!
I received a copy of this book from Anise Eden for my honest and unbiased review.
I didn't know what to expect when I started reading this one. I didn't realize it was a paranormal storyline, but I was pleasantly surprised.
Cathryn Duncan is still mourning her mother's suicide. She has taken a leave from her work as a counselor and has stopped leaving the house because she gets overwhelmed by the emotions of others. The boss has told her she needs to see a colleague of his in order to return to work. That's how she ends up at an abandoned church and meeting a crazy group of characters including Ben MacGregor. She soon discovers that this is no ordinary therapy session. Will Cate be able to get over her mother's death? What do the MacGregors want with her and her abilities?
This book is incredibly clever with its storyline. I loved the comic relief of Pete and Kai. Sid is a great character and I couldn't help but fall in love with him. I will say that I wish more had been revealed as far as the "team's" purpose. Also the ending was very abrupt, it would have been nice to have a bit of a hint as to what was to come. I would definitely recommend this series to my friends who love paranormal stories.
All The Broken Places, by Anise Eden is the first book in her new series, The Healing Edge. Although this is the first book in a new series, there is no cliffhanger. There was a mention of something to come but that was never developed, but I suspect that it is a series theme and will continue to develop and play out over the next books in this series. As for this individual book, we are not left hanging and Ellie finally finds happiness. This book was different and original and not was expecting at all. It is labelled as Paranormal but it’s not about vampires, shape shifters, or any magical creatures. It’s based on Parapsycology, a science that is not widely accepted. Naturally, fiction is added as is a nice little romance that develops into a nice, feel good story. This is not the type of story I usually read, but I enjoyed it and it did keep my attention so that I was able to read it in one sitting. I really enjoyed the characters, each with their own unique “gift.” Learning about the characters and watching them interact was the best part. I would have enjoyed a little more grittiness, maybe a twist here and there. I felt like it was just sort of plain, but that’s just me. There was a little action at the end but I found it predictable.
It was very well written. The plot and characters were well developed. The story flowed effortlessly. The dialogue was not confusing but I did find it “scripted” in places. There were places that felt like I was reading a text book but I am very interested in Auras, Chakras, etc… so this was OK for me. Overall, it was a nice read and I enjoyed it. It was a pleasant change to the intense books that I usually read. I think it’s more of a young adult book. I am interested in what happens to the characters in future books but I’m honestly not sure if I will continue with the series because of the price. It’s just a higher price that I usually pay for books that have me jumping up and down and while this is a nice, sweet read, it didn’t have me that excited. That said, if this is the type of book you read, I recommend it and this author. It is one of the best written books I’ve read. Her writing was “lyrical,” which is which I why I have to give it 4 stars.
I was asked for an honest review free of persuasion from the author or anyone else affiliated with this book.
CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS
I was pleasantly surprised with this book. I didn't read the synopsis or any other descriptions prior to reading this book. I essentially went into this book blind. I loved it from the first page! The characters were well developed. The empathy shown in Cate was amazing. I am just speechless with this book. I can't wait for the next book!!!!
Cate is a therapist. The care she gives her patients is outstanding. That is until her mother commits suicide. Cate becomes depressed. She turns into a recluse unable to leave her house or come in contact with anyone outside her tight circle. Her boss allows it for 10 weeks. He then demands she enters a treatment program in order to keep her job. She doesn't expect the program to involve paranormal abilities. Cate learns things about herself that she never understood. How does Cate handle all of the new information? How is it dangerous for her?
I can not wait for the next book in this series!!!! Please Anise, dont make me wait to long.......is it done yet?! ;-)
A beautiful and fascinating read, which I really enjoyed.
Cate has special empathic abilities and after the loss of her mother, she is struggling to get her life back on track. Her boss refers her for a special 3 week course otherwise she'll lose her job. What she doesn't understand is that everyone at her placement has different abilities, which at first she is very skeptical about.
I loved Cate's journey with Ben McGregor. At times I found Cate quite annoying when she didn't believe in other peoples abilities even though she was carrying one ability of her own.
Having said this, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it was very different from the paranormal books that I normally read.
To say I LOVED this book is an understatement. Her characterization and writing style is detailed yet engaging. Cate is flawed and easy to relate to. Her relationships in the book were original – I love that she didn’t give us the old boy meets girl romance plot line, but instead provided something more complex. But most of all, I love the powers in this book. Her treatment of the various abilities is clearly based on research. I know Reiki, and the way she described it was accurate without going overboard on the spiritual side, perfect for those new to it. Anise Eden is definitely one of my new favorite authors and will be featured on my blog at katstiles.com. Kudos for bringing spirituality into fiction without scaring away the reader! What an excellent, fun read. :)
All The Broken Places by Anise Eden is a paranormal book written in the first person. This book is well written and I loved the characters! I was hooked from the beginning and found it to be an awesome story. I love empaths and found all the other aspects Like the crystals and aura reader to be super cool.I am very excited to have read this book. As an empath myself I sometimes have a hard time being around certain people and I tend to take on anger of others so it was so cool to read about Cates empathy and read about her struggles. This book does touch on suicide and mental health but I didn't find it to be hard to read or a trigger. I found the book to be unique and engaging. I really have nothing negative to say. I thought it was great and would seek out others. 5 star rating!
All the Broken Places is book one in this series. And what a great beginning it is! Anything paranormal, I absolutely love reading about. But the author gives us a truly unique storyline, not your typical paranormal book.
Cate, the main character is an empath. She is struggling through life after the death of her mother. Her character and the others involved are very well developed. Each person has their own special ability. The author did a wonderful job making me fall in love with them all! Now I'm ready for the next book!
If you like paranormal stories, this is a book that you won't want to put down. A must read that I highly recommend!
Cate keeps fighting the powers that be, and in her case that's her Boss Dr. Neilson, her new sorta-boss Dr. McGregor and her son Ben. She can't stand Ben. But the team that she is working with and learning from seem to be an okay ragtag bunch of parapsychology mentors. No matter how hard Cate works on herself over Hell Week in the program, she can't disconnect from her work, or her clients. It's quite literally killing her.
I enjoyed the book, looking forward to picking up book two. Thanks!
3.5/5 stars. * I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review*
"All the Broken Places". Book 1
BY: Anise Eden
Empath healing, crystals, Reiki, acupuncture, precognition and communication beyond the grave; not much not to like in the training program Cathryn Duncan is forced to attend by her boss. But Cate is not convinced that all that mumble jumbo is scientifically sound. To keep her job, she must attend a 3 week program that she is adamant that she does not need and she is NOT happy about it.
Good storyline and interesting characters (I loved the fact that they were all adults and comfortable with their paranormal skill sets) make a great foundation for this story. I was interested in the premise from the beginning. I foresaw a little history on the origination of these skill sets but it never really covered everything it eluded to and I hoped for. I would like to see a little more character development and substance in the next installment. There is a lot of "hard head butting" between Cate and most everyone else but especially the possible love interest that goes by the name of Ben....the manager of the program. The romance felt a little immature and monotonous after a while as if the author had to include it for more spice but it still fed into the story.
Only one week of the 3 week training program was covered in this episode and I am assuming that the others will be covered in future installments or the "training" will become an "orientation" for Cate. I liked the method of heading some chapters "Day 1", "Day 2", etc. Helped keep a handle on timeline.
I will pick up the next installment to see how Cate's journey evolves.
Cate has really struggled after her mother’s suicide. She couldn’t leave the house with being overwhelmed. She is a very dedicated therapist that is really connected with her clients. The time off after her mother’s death has been hard for her but she’s secretly been helping them with her special connections and with the help of another therapist and friend Simone.
Cate is roped into attending a special training program that will help her deal with her special abilities. She didn’t even know her abilities were real but as she gets to know each member of the team she finds out that not only is she an emotional empath but that each member of the team has unique abilities as well.
One of the most intriguing paranormal stories that I’ve read. From the very beginning I was hooked and couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. Part way through the book I was already looking forward to reading book 2.
I received a free copy from the author in exhange for an honest review. Thank you!
This book was awesome!!! Specially Kai, he was so hilarious and cute! (Kai is not the romantic interest). Seriously, if you are up to some awkward but funny scenes, mixed with some paranormal, this is your book!
The writing sucked me in from the first page, as did the plot. I hadn't read any books like this before, and was pleasantly surprised. And Kai... Whenever he appeared on the text, I knew I would laugh, as with his cowboy. Even though I can't see any major flaws, Cate was a little too whiney for my taste. It doesn't reach the level of annoyance of most heroines, but still.
In conclusion: All the broken places is definitely worth a read if you like paranormal. I hope I can read the second one!
Cathryn Duncan has lost her mother and has passed through several weeks of grief. As a therapist she senses something is wrong but she isn't sure how to handle it and why it is happening to her. She finds herself writing suicide notes and then putting them away. Suicide is not something she wants to do or is it just a thought to make the pain stop. So much pain in her life and she is working so hard to help others. Her deep connection to her clients makes her a good therapist, her empathic ability, however could be at the base of her problem. Her director recognizes a talent that is rare in Cath. Now he sends her to a three week program at a specialty program. Her immediate thought is that they think she is failing in her task. Now it is up to Cath to learn about herself in an environment she never knew was real until now.
All the Broken Places is the first book in the Healing Edge Series by Anise Eden, it was a good book and I really enjoyed the story when I finally got a chance to focus on it. I'm usually not a fan of paranormal stories but this book was one I did enjoy and I do plan on keeping up with so I can see where Cate and Ben end up along with what happens with the others.
I want more of Kai and Pete, especially Kai. I would love to have a Kai in my life! I liked Cate, she cared for her patients and other with her whole heart and felt bad for her at the same time with everything she is dealing with. Ben was the broody alpha Marine who could have shown how truly alpha he was but I'm hoping that will shown in the following books. If you have any interest at all in the paranormal I would recommend trying this series out.
I've never read paranormal romance before, so I can't say if this fits the genre, but I found the romance part took a back seat to the paranormal part, which was great for me. The characters were compelling and fun, the subject matter was sometimes serious but didn't drag, and the treatment of the paranormal elements felt real. Can't wait to read the next part!
I thought this novel was exceptional and beautifully written!!! I have only been reading a few Paranormal books (by another author) and that is why I purchased this book not only from its description but to see what another author would write about and how they would write.
This was a real page turner for me as I was completely taken in by the different characters and their different 'paranormal abilities.' Firstly, the main character (Cate) was a real gem and I very much liked learning about her work as a psychologist while, at the same time, being an Empath healer to be able to help her patients even more. What she did not realize was that she was helping the others so much by being able to submerge herself into them that she was hurting herself both emotionally and physically. She had lost her mother to suicide and began to spiral into a depression herself. She began writing suicide notes and kept them in a special place in her home but never knew if she was going to act upon or follow her mother. Fortunately, her boss recognized this and suggested that she stop for 3 weeks to attend a program run by The MacGregor Group that she had never heard of before. Cate was very hesitant about this program (and rightfully so) and extremely skeptical of what they were doing but she agreed to 'sign up' (literally) for the program and, even then, she did not care for what this (daily) program entailed was as well as questioning herself about each of the other members (each with their own special abilities) who would be trying to help her. She even agreed to be picked up and taken back home every week day by one of the MacGraw employees named Pete. As a reader of this novel (if you read it) you will learn to love and be humored by each of the other employees of the program and their individual personalities.
These other characters were quite characters themselves. They are a charismatic group of alternative healers in a unique world that would draw almost any reader into even though the main character (Cate) as part of this world is against it. Even though these different characters with their different abilities were exceptional with trying to help Cate ... Cate was very leery about meeting them and agreeing to let them help her with their special abilities. She becomes very bull-headed with her loving but strong personality and will sometimes go to try and help one of her patients (even though she is now in the program and networking) and get in big trouble by hurting herself so badly she almost dies. But there is always someone coming to find her and help her. I did not read this as a romance but a romance develops between the MacGregor program's founder and manager's son 'Ben’ who also works to keep the program going. You never know whether 'Ben' are going to get together after experiencing intense feelings toward each other without either one knowing if the other was experiencing the same.
During this program, you have to abide by certain rules both inside and outside this program. No sex, no certain foods, etc. and Cate had to agree to this when she signed up. Another reason that she was hesitant to join this program. She learns that she has to go through a daily routine with each of the other program workers who specialize either in Reiki, Acupuncture, precognition and communication beyond the grave while she specializes in Empath Healing. Cate, however, is forced to attend by her boss (Dr. Nelson) or she will lose her job. But Cate is not convinced that all that mumble jumbo is scientifically sound. To keep her job, she must attend a 3 week program that she is adamant that she does not need and she is NOT happy about it." She later finds out that her boss (Dr. Nelson) is very connected with the MacGregor Program and all of its members which makes her even more angry because she thinks they have been going behind her back.
As each day goes by Cate is pretty sure she is going to quit the program for a variety of different reasons but the more you read the more you will find out why Cate (and perhaps even you as a reader) would stick it out and find out what this program is all about. It is strange but fun and get stranger but even more fun!
Outside of this program Cate has, and had been seeing, a good boy-friend who is a good friend but, since her mother's death, none of her relationships have developed into anything more. She had to give up the sex that she enjoyed with this boy-friend yet he understood. She had to put her job on hold and the outside life she had been all too familiar with to join and continue and complete this program. In this way, it is very suspenseful. This spectacularly written novel flowed together perfectly for me, like the main character (Cate), because I never knew what was coming. This first novel in the series is not a cliffhanger but I am looking forward to another with one if not more of these characters!!! I think a Goodreads member named Heather Fleet gave the best reviews for this book! I am definitely looking forward to the next novel in this series!
I received this book from the author for an honest review.
This book has an unusual yet interesting narrative and I liked it.
Cate is an empath but she doesn't know how to control her abilities, since her mother's death, she can't bring herself to return to work. Her employer refers her to seek help and therefore she finds herself being placed on a three week programme. The programme is designed to help her understand her gifts and use them safely.
Will she complete the programme?
The book is slow paced and it's told from Cate's perspective. I would have liked Ben's POV primarily because I felt like I was constantly in her head and it became overwhelming to read. I found Cate overbearing throughout, she got under my skin. I understood where she was coming from but her behaviour was immature and irrational. I liked Ben, he stands his ground and fights dirty to ensure she completes the programme. I liked Kai's bubbly personality and Vani made me laugh, when she reads Cate's aura and says she got laid several times the night before lol.
I'm an old hippie, into anything New Age, so when I read the blurb on this book I knew it would be just up my alley, and it was. It was well written (a rarity these days) with interesting characters. And the material was presented in easily absorbed bites. However, that was probably my one real complaint. I felt at times like I was reading a non-fiction book on healing methods. I imagine in later books all the groundwork will be worth it, so I'm looking forward to the next book. I must also agree with another reviewer that the heroine's unwillingness to open her mind was a little unrealistic. How many people still think that mediums wear turbans, when performers like well dressed guys like John Edward are on TV or at your nearest venue? So yeah, maybe the heroine was a bit too much of a caricature of the skeptic for me. But those are niggly things that didn't distract from a good story well told.
Loved it! It was really nice to read a paranormal romance where the main characters are not teenagers--not that there's anything wrong with that :) NIH & especially NIMH have always seemed a little nefarious to me, even though my bff works at the later--I blame it on the Secret of NIMH movie--and I can't wait to see where Cate's abilities lead her. Plus, I love her equal measures of empathy and skepticism, and her eventual embracing of her new family. I'm so glad that I bought all three books at once because now I get to see how Cate's relationship with Ben evolves. Brava to Anise Eden!
I love all types of Paranormal stories. Physic detectives and witch cozies, Carpathians and time traveler's etc. This story is quite different and unique. Due to a birth defect and chronic pain, reading is a way to get out of my head and push the pain away. I read about a book everyday of all sorts but the premise of this story of advanced/alternative healing and the constant battle with suicidal thoughts as a "back-up plan" was like my own thoughts in writing. Obviously I highly recommend reading.
This was a very interesting book. Not at all what I was expecting. Cate has some very serious issues. She is fascinated with suicide, since her own mother took her life. She is a very strong empath, and is doing herself harm without knowing it.Ben and his mother, run a clinic that helps people who are sensitive. Cate is sceptical, but learns a lot about herself and her abilities. There is very little romance until the end. It is mostly about Cate learning.
Looking for a paranormal to read? Try this first book in a potential series. Instead of the usual werewolves, ghosts, or vampires, instead, it has psychics of all different kinds.
I truly enjoyed this book and was pleasantly surprised. I could identify will the heroine. The storyline while not entirely new the way it was presented was unique enough that it kept me hooked. Definitely a good read!
