The Ten Commandments. Do you see them as a strict set of rules with a punishment for disobedience? Do you think they are outdated, without meaning for us today? Or might they be a blueprint for your life, designed by a loving and gracious God? The law that He spoke into being on the mountainside so long ago is still active and applicable to our lives now. Mark Mitchell shows us how we can embrace both God’s law and His gospel of grace to find true freedom.
I really enjoyed this book. Like many other people, I grew up in the church and learned to recite the Ten Commandments from a young age. However, I never really took the time to really understand and unpack what each of the commandments meant and how it applies to life today. In this short, but informative book, Mitchell goes through each one of the ten commandments, showing the Biblical basis then and also how to practically live it out today. For example, coveting relates to our consumeristic mentality and mindset of greed. Adultery can happen because of access to pornographic materials or inappropriate relationships with the opposite gender, and so many people break the Sabbath by not taking proper rest and relaxation from their daily work. It was a helpful overview and I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to find out more about how the law sets us free from slavery and bondage to sin.
