On January 12, 2010, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the country of Haiti. The world reacted in shock to the news reports of the devastation. Immediately responding to the catastrophe were Love A Child ministry founders Bobby and Sherry Burnette, who had somehow escaped death. In the days following, they came to believe they had been spared in order to minister to the desperate needs all around them. When the earthquake hit, Bobby and Sherry had already served in Haiti for many years. Love Is Something You Do is the extraordinary narrative of the Burnettes’ lifelong journey of faith and compassion. If you love a great story, find a place to settle in and read one fascinating account after another. Travel the path that led them to Haiti—a land of mountains, colorful cultures, and insightful proverbs, but also of extreme poverty, oppressive voodoo, and despair. Experience their early years in street ministry, their life-threatening adventures and accidents, their incidents of miraculous healings and financial provision, and their standoffs with witch doctors and evil spirits. Above all, be renewed by their message of hope and peace, through which they continue to transform people’s lives spiritually, physically, educationally, and vocationally—giving Haitians a life of dignity and purpose they had never dreamed possible.
“Love Is Something You Do” by Bobby and Sherry Burnette is a 208 page paperback book. This Christian Living/Biography is published by Whitaker House. The cover is a picture of the Burnettes with two children standing in front of a hut in a village. Everyone is happy and smiling. The forward of their book is written by Pastor Jentezen Franklin.
This book tells the inspirational and sometimes heart wrenching story of The Burnettes. Bobby came from a dysfunctional family and was sent off to an aunt's house after his mother had an emotional breakdown. Those weren't the best of years either. After growing up and marrying Sherry the couple went on many mission trips. Haiti captured their heart and they set up "Love a Child" ministry. Eventually they moved to Haiti and established an orphanage, Christian school, medical facility, radio station, and housing. The Burnettes were spared during the devastating hurricane of January 2010. They set about helping the people their even more after that.
This book is about hope, listening to God and trusting in Him, and helping others. It is about love in action. Loving those less fortunate than ourselves. It is a story of spiritual warfare, good verses evil in that part of the world. It is the nitty gritty story of missionaries and what they sacrifice to serve God and others. It tells many true life stories, some will make you cry tears of joy while others will make you heartsick.
The authors write their book in the first person, switching back and forth between Bobby and Sherry. This allows readers a more intimate connection to their story. The stories are sometimes unbelievably frightening, such as when they battle witch doctors, voodoo, and zombies (read the book!). The stories are also glorifying to God when they share triumphs over evil and great spiritual victories. The entire book shows how God has had His hand on the Burnettes by providing donations, protection from evil and storms. This is an encouraging book of love in action and one that we could learn from by reading and doing.
I would highly recommend this book. Anyone that enjoys bibliographies, missionary stories, or inspirational real life tales will love this book. I rated it a 5 out of 5 stars. I received a copy of this book through The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review.
Love Is Something You Do by Sherry and Bobby Burnette was not just an inspiring read, but an awe inspiring read. The true story of the life of the Burnettes as they rise above their troubled childhoods to help children in Haiti- the land of voodoo, cruel dictatorships, and extreme poverty. It’s the perfect setting to show sacrificial love and watch as God’s power surmount impossible odds around you and through you. The Burnettes learn this first hand as they survive zombies, bombings, and even an earthquake and watch as every hardship they face becomes a miracle story and every victim they face meet become an opportunity to show love. Because love isn’t something you say- it’s something you do. And it’s something you do because Christ first loved you.

Holy, holy, holy. I started slow on this one. The writing style is simple, but the story is amazing. I have said a few times that "love" isn't a feeling, it is an action. Bobby and Sherry put that into action every day. There are some great insights in this book. One which really struck me is that when one is hungry (not in the American sense of the word) it is difficult to think and to plan and there is no strength for work or even hearing the Word. Another insight was Bobby's feeling, despite counsel otherwise, that he should build nice places & make the orphanage a wonderful home for the kids, the best home they could have. Wow, I am amazed. Now to think on who I want to give this book to next.
This book is full of examples of God actively working in the lives of the Burnets. They have devoted their lives to serving Him, and He has blessed their ministry. If you don't believe that God is alive and well, and still performs miracles, then the stories in this book may just change your mind. The Haitian people are still suffering and children are starving even today. We can all, like the Burnets, choose to help these or other impoverished people, or we can simply turn our heads and look the other way. No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.
This is a very engaging book about Love A Child mission work and humanitarian aid in Haiti. It is a very personal and biographic narrative, written in first person by both of the authors. I highly recommend it.
The Burnettes share their journey and how God has brought them to the place of having an orphanage, medical center, school, and housing in one of the poorest areas of Haiti. Their story is amazing and inspiring.
Bobby's childhood was a troubled one. His mother was 36 when he was born, his father 71. Two weeks after his birth, his mother had a nervous breakdown and was institutionalized. He was sent to live with an “aunt.” He heard God tell him at a young age that he would preach the gospel – but he had severe speech problems. He was later miraculously healed. He was kicked out of his “aunt's” house when a teen and disinherited.
He married and did street preaching. He and Sherry went on mission trips. While they visited many countries, Haiti touched their hearts in an unusual way. They established an organization, Love a Child, to focus on reducing poverty in Haiti's poorest areas. They moved to Haiti in July of 1991. There was a coup in September.
They took in a couple of orphans, then a few more, then more, and an orphanage was born. A healing center, Christian school, and radio station were added. They share how God moved people to provide land, funding, work parties, and supplies. During the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, their property became the largest field hospital in the country.
They also share about the spiritual battle with evil, witch doctors and voodoo. They also write about their encounters with zombies, people victimized by witch doctors. They tell great stories of spiritual victories. They also tell of the cost of being missionaries, such as missing celebrating the birthdays of their grandchildren.
Their story is inspiring. They are a couple truly putting their faith and compassion in action. It is so encouraging to read how God provided resources right when they were needed. I highly recommend the book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through The Book Club Network for the purpose of an independent and honest review.
This is a nice read. It is wriiten in a biographical way. But it's more like listening to someone tell you the story of their life. The editing was done well. The book is an easy read. Flows well. I was given this book in exchange for my honest review through bookfun.org.
Not the most well-written book, but the message was so powerful. The things God has done through Bobby and Sherry Burnette will blow you away. Really the only problem I had with this book was it was often unclear if it was Bobby or Sherry talking, and sometimes the story jumped in time.
