In an era that saw many gifted and diligent ministers, missionaries and evangelists being used by God to powerfully advance Christ’s Kingdom work in South Africa, Andrew Murray (1828–1917) emerged as that country’s premier preacher, devotional writer and Church leader. Andrew Murray’s writings and influence are still felt today and Vance Christie skilfully and faithfully brings his story to life for a new generation.
Vance Christie is a pastor and author best known for vivid retelling of missionary stories. He lives in Aurora, Nebraska and has previously written for the 'Heroes of the Faith' series. His website is www.vancechristie.com.
There is one word to characterize Andrew Murray's life and ministry: passionate. Whether he was pastoring or on a preaching circuit (which he did even to his 80's), counselling, writing or prayer, Murray was passionate about God, refusing to waste his life. If anything his life was far from boring and very full. His life is a great inspiration, the only deflective from this book was that it became very political and dry at times. Otherwise, a great book to read.
A good biography that I enjoyed for the most part. This man and his family deeply loved God. Murray’s theology was an unusual mix of reformed and Keswick “deeper life” teaching. I think the reformed theology kept him grounded and protected him from what J I Packer called "pietistic goofiness." (https://www.reformation21.org/mos/151...) A lot of interesting history of South Africa.
First few chapters were a little slow, but once it got going, more into his ministry (past the first 10 years or so) and devotional life, it was really spectacular.
A comprehensive biography of a man who was wholly devoted to Christ and His Gospel. A bit heavy-going to read, with lots of dates and abbreviations to remember, but definitely worth the effort.
