PAT SHAND writes comic books (Robyn Hood, Family Pets, Charmed, Angel) and pop culture journalism (Sad Girls Guide, Blastoff Comics). He lives in San Diego with his girlfriend and their veritable zoo of cats.
This review is for the 2nd and fifth issues. Cannot find them on Goodreads, but I did find it on Comixology Unlimited. All 5 individual issues are there. Good spooky vampire action. I call it light hearted horror. Sometimes you have to wonder why Van Helsing is running around in mid winter in a skimpy outfit, but ahh, who really cares?
I love this Van Helsing Story!! Taking place after the revelations of the last mini series Liesel is going after the big bad himself...DRACULA!!! Well written and the art was great!
This book is an improvement over the first book, "Helsing The Darkness and the Light," in story and art work. It will help the reader to read this first trade before reading this one. Not necessary, but helpful.
Liesel Van Helsing is a cool character and her fellow vampire hunters Hades, Jonathan Harker, and Mina improve in character development in this book.
The art is well done with more expressive facial reactions and perspectives.
This was a good book that added some new elements to the tired character of Dracula. Lots of action and some good artwork help everything along. The writing was not the best and jumped around a little too much but the story more than makes up for it. The world of comics underserves both horror comics and the world of steampunk and this book helps to fill that void. Not a five star comic book but it was a good read none-the-less.
Well that was bloody good, lol despite the many interruptions I had trying to read it. The art work and the story work wonderfully together. Was unaware that there was another story before this one. This was an impulse purchase at the comic store. But who can turn down a story with Dracula in the title, lol
Van Helsing vs. Dracula is a rather mediocre action-horror comic. When Jonathan Harker’s fiancée falls under Dracula’s thrall he calls on his old friend Liesel Van Helsing to help save her. Author Pat Shand puts a few interesting spins on the Dracula mythos, but Van Helsing comes off as a pretty generic action heroine. And a lot of the exposition feels forced. However, artist Michele Bandini does a good job at balancing the horror and action; so that it never feels gratuitous. Also included is cover gallery featuring all the variants. It’s entertaining and delivers a few thrills, but Van Helsing vs. Dracula is one of Zenescope’s lesser re-imaginings.
I agree with reviews that say the story in this graphic is much better than the previous, “Helsing: The Darkness and the Light.” Pat Shane got a lot of the vampire/Dracula clichés out of the way with the first round, and the story here seems to evolve into something of its own.
Another great storyline. I loved the artwork, the action was steady and there was even an apperance by some of the other Zenescope ladies. One of my favorite characters was happy to read it in graphic novel form:)
Excellent story and graphics. Love the idea of a steampunk female vampire slayer. Cover to cover action as Liesel Van Helsing takes on the Master vampire himself. Highly recommended.
