Best friends Idella and Minnie are mired in Chickadee, a tiny dot in southern Alabama seeped in piety and rural poverty, believed to be cursed with an ancient witch, and caught in the 75 miserable years between the Civil War and the beginning of World War II. Unsettled things are attracted to unsettled times. After sneaking out to meet boys at a speakeasy one night, both girls are offered a deal with the devil. How far will they go to keep their vow to get out of Chickadee? Consequences from their decisions that night shape them into unrecognizable creatures and spin the girls into a wild world where secrets may destroy them both.
