About this item Ranyk is a cocky alien terraformer with a world of problems. Forty thousand Irish colonists entrusted him to engineer their new home, but now they’re stranded between a civil war and a colony planet infested by pirates. His security-officer sister discovered an atrocity brewing against their species but then suddenly disappeared. His boss and colleagues at the Office of Terraformation have been attacked by unknown assailants. Not all of them survived, and neither did clues to the perpetrators’ motives or identities.
His next steps? To talk his way out of a Titan prison since he mouthed his way into a contempt charge. To finish the biggest atmosphere-creation rush job of his career before the Irish are captured. And to find out who tried to kill him and then frame him for damaging Saturn’s rings. Most of all, he needs to discover who has it out for his friends before his world - his species - is extinguished.
Derick is a former high school biology teacher and currently treats patients as an urgent care physician assistant. As a result, he flavors stories with precocious teens, plausible new technology, and delightfully messy medical scenes. He also designs fantasy games, thanks to cross-pollinated fascinations with Tolkien and mathematical probability.
He lives in Washington with his wife and kids. He’s planning a mountain bike trip on Mars, and will be backpacking from Imladris to Lothlorien when he finds a good map.
Adventures through space, lots of sarcasm, likeable characters and quite a bit of violence, that's this book in a nutshell. It carries on from Houses of Common so you really need to read that first. There is occasionally confusion as it jumps from one set of characters to another but I soon got used to it and grew to expect it. I really enjoyed reading this story because of the humour surrounding the very tense situations and the fact that it was very well written. I look forward to reading book 3 in this series. *I received this book from Book Review 22 for an honest review, my opinions are my own.*
The continuing story, which began in Houses of Common, follows the ongoing adventures of the two alien Rildj, brother and sister Ranyk and Sckiik, and those of their friends and colleagues as they find themselves drawn even deeper in the galactic conspiracy. Why was the Rildj ambassador murdered? And who is so anxious to stop the Irish colonists from reaching their new planet? How will Ranyk escape imprisonment or death? And who, or what, is Dr.Perinath? But mostly, what on earth and beyond is going on? Certainly not a stand alone novel, this fast paced, well written, sometimes funny and often crazy, but always imaginative story blasts around space and needs the reader's concentration to keep up. But it is well worth the effort and I, for one, can't wait for the third book in the series, Indentured
And away...we...go! The second book in the series is just as good if not better then the first. You've met the characters, you've had a set up but now we get to the really juicy, in depth bits of the plot. The story still jumps from couple to couple in it's fast, action stylized, flow but you get to discover and live the development of them all as they go along. There are more action scenes, more space ship chases, more scientific jargon and best of all...the cliff hanger at the end even though you've just discovered answers, you are left with more and you are left wanting more. Truly I wish I could go into more details but then I might ruin a sub-plot and that would be an immense dishonor to the book.
I really struggled with book one however I did make it through. This one actually was easier for me to follow and I am not sure if it's because I made it through the first one. I enjoyed the quirky humor the characters throw at you. I find myself understanding Ranyk much better. Much more action takes place and many more mysteries are uncovered. All in all a highly entertaining second book! I have been given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received a free copy of this ebook from Book Review 22 in exchange for an honest review. This book is for hardcore SciFi fans who like science and political intrigue with sarcastic humor thrown in. There is violence so it may not be appropriate for more sensitive readers. It is not a standalone. You really need to have read Houses of Common first, as this book starts right where that one ended. Meaner Sort ends in a cliffhanger to be continued in the next book.
The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that info here. Again in this book, like Houses of Common, took a bit to get used to the back and forth between the storylines of Ranyk and his sister Sckiik. She rescued one egg from the old destroyed nursery on the moon. Will it, and she, continue to survive? Can Ranyk and Sckiik figure out why they are being targeted and reunite and figure out who is trying to extinguish their entire race? And what about the Irish colonists? And Ranyk continues to not be able to keep his sarcastic mouth shut and that just adds to his trouble.
There's a lot going on in the storylines from multiple characters and locations. While I overall enjoyed the book, it was difficult to read as it did not flow smoothly. The storyline would abruptly change to that of a different character and I wouldn't realize it for awhile. That meant a lot of going back and forth to figure out who the current dialogue was involving. After investing all this time in reading the first two books I'm sure I'll read the third, but hope it's easier to follow.
Meaner Sort (Nothing Important Happened #2) by Derick William Dalton is a sci-fi/fantasy book. I struggled to get through this book. I liked the concept but couldn't get into the characters or the plot. The last half of the book picked up and started to go better then ended in a cliff hanger which is not my favorite kind of book. I received this book for a honest review.
