داستان نمایشنامه‌ی «گناه» درست کمی قبل از زلزله‌ی بزرگ سانفرانسیسکو در سال ۱۹۸۹ اتفاق می‌افته. کاراکتر اصلی، اِیوری بلی، زنیه که زندگی رو از بالا به پایین می‌بینه. به معنای واقعی چون گزارشگر ترافیک با هلیکوپتره و به معنای استعاری چون نوعی حس برتری به مسائل انسانی داره. البته دلیلش قطب‌نمای‌ اخلاقی قوی‌ درون ذهنشه که اجازه نمیده از ساختارهای محکمی که برای خودش ساخته تخطی کنه. حتی جایی که لازمه

اِیوری در طول نمایش مکالماتی با افرادی داره که به نوعی نمایانگر هفت گناه کبیره هستند. رئیسش نمایانگر خشم، همسر سابق الکیش نمونه‌ی بارز تنبلی، دوست صمیمیش نمایانگر پرخوری، همکارش تعریف کامل حسادت، مردی که باهاش سر قرار میره نشان‌دهنده‌ی شهوت و حرص و برادرش نماد غرور در این نمایشنامه هستند. مواجهه با این افراد اما ساده نمی‌گذره و اِیوری به ضعف‌هاشون اشاره می‌کنه. تا جایی که ورق برمی‌گرده

این از توضیحات نمایش و جوری که در این سال‌ها دیده شده. اما من این داستان رو اینطور ندیدم. من زنی رو دیدم که بین گله‌ای از انسان‌های بی‌مسئولیت، احمق و زن‌ستیز گیر افتاده و باید بارشون رو به دوش بکشه. زنی که مجبوره به جای همه‌ی اون‌ها «بی‌گناه» باشه و حالا بعد از اینکه به این اجبار تن داده، به خاطر همین تفاوت تنهاست. زنی که از عقل، کارآمدی و مسئولیت پذیریش استفاده می‌کنند و بعد به خاطر همین‌ها سرزنش میشه

اجرای تئاتر لندن این نمایشنامه رو گوش دادم که یکی از بازیگران صدا هم استیو کارل هست. به نظرم اجرای تمیزی بود که شوخ‌طبعی سیاه این نمایش رو به خوبی منتقل می‌کرد

Very funny and relatable. The presence of Steve Carrell in the audio performance is a bonus.

Listened to the radio play by LA Theater Works. They did a good job with the production, but I just didn't really enjoy the script. I know this is an oversimplification, but really? The lead character is the only normal person in the entire play, but she needs to "sin" a little in order to become more human and reconnect with her alcoholic husband? It doesn't even seem like the husband grows at all. He's not drunk in the final scene because there's an emergency. That doesn't show that he's in any way learned that being an alcoholic isn't okay. The resolution honestly makes it seem like it's HER fault that their relationship is on the rocks. Not because he's an alcoholic! I'm sure that wasn't the author's intention, but it really irked me. I haven't read other works by MacLeod. The writing dialogue was good and the play was interesting, just couldn't get behind what seemed to be the message of the play.

As it turns out, Wendy Macleod is one of my top 5 favorite writers and number 1 when it comes to dialogue. She wrote my favorite play, House of Yes, which was adapted into my favorite movie. Sidebar -- if you haven't seen it, GO NOW, FIND IT! Not only does she have a gift for gab but the plots are also genius. In the past, plays haven't been a major reading dietary source, but I can't wait to go out and buy everything Macleod has ever written.
