This contemporary thriller deals with the redemption of a fourteen year old boy who crosses paths with a young woman trying to outrun a past of her own and a derelict betrayed by his country trying to find answers to questions no one should have asked.
very different from what i normally read and i thought it was interesting. ending felt a little rushed and kinda all over the place. maybe i just don’t know what a cathedral looks like but i could not follow where they were going in the last scene. why were there zombies? never brought up again and didn’t really do anything. the end was just like he did it! he died?! no he’s back all in the span of three sentences. like they built it up as this super intense fight and then it was like “I can do it” and it was over. yellow dog was very cute.

This wasn't her best book, but it was okay. As the other reviewer mentioned, the points on Voodoo were a bit off, but I really wasn't too overly concerned enough with those details to look them up at the time. To me, it was just a decent thriller. I enjoyed it, but don't remember it being quite as good as her other books. Still, it was fun and kept me glued to my seat so I'd recommend it. It's part of my collection.
This book has a great blend of voodoo, military, storms and gang themes, and I think it's great for a young adult audience. It's right smack in the 90s supernatural action category. There are quite a few cool characters which give the action room for surprises. I would have liked more of the characters' experiences vividly detailed in the final part of the book because it would have been worth an additional fifty or so pages. As it stands the finale happens so quickly that part of the suspense is wasted. This makes it seem over-edited, like it had to fit publisher demands. Otherwise it's a good story and flows well.
