From the bestselling author of ‘Shepherd’s Cross’, comes a chilling supernatural tale about possession, betrayal and the fine line between hope and despair.
Haunted by memories of a dark and troubled childhood, Sam Railton has nevertheless managed to carve out a respectable position in society, with a successful career in advertising and a loving, supportive family. Or so he believes...
As he approaches his fortieth birthday, life is ticking along without too many problems, until a chance encounter outside a hotel lobby turns his entire world upside down.
Leaving London in order to clear his head, Sam soon suspects that all is not as it seems. One by one, a series of sinister, harrowing events begin to unfold, causing him to question his sanity and forcing him to confront the nightmares of his past, with terrifying consequences...
Fast paced and utterly compelling, ‘Enter the Dead’ is a haunting novel that will appeal to readers who enjoy the work of James Herbert, Stephen King and Peter James. An ideal read for a cold, winter's eve!
--------- Praise for Mark White's novels (from verified Amazon UK customers):
‘I am a great James Herbert fan. I would rate this author along the same lines as him. This is horror at its best.’
'After reading Shepherd's Cross I was eagerly anticipating the author's next book. I was not disappointed and in fact felt that Enter the Dead surpassed it. I was gripped from the first chapter and the ending .... well all I can say is wow. It is fantastic to find a new author who keeps getting better. I can't wait for the next one.'
‘Every bit as good as Dennis Wheatley if not better!’
‘Shepherd’s Cross must be the best supernatural thriller I have ever read, and believe me I have read a fair few.’
'As a reader of many supernatural/horror novels, including the likes of James Herbert, Richard Layman, Graham Masterson, the list goes on, I have to say this was up with the very best books I have read in a long, long time!!!'
‘This novel had me gripped from the beginning!’
'Had not heard of this author before but gave a it try and was rewarded with a well written book that was riveting from start to finish.'
'A superb roller coaster of a read. The best book I've read in ages. A real page turner and I will be looking out for more from this author.'
‘In the genre of Stephen King and James Herbert but with his own unique style.’
Mark Anthony White (April 10th, 1974 -) was born in the small industrial town of Consett in Northeast England. Like hordes of other children across the globe who grew up in the 'innocent', pre-internet days of the 1980s, he spent many an evening curled up in bed (in a literary sense, of course) with horror legends Stephen King and James Herbert. Having spent his twenties and thirties working in a variety of interesting and not-so-interesting jobs that took him well along the road to a mid-life crisis, he decided to do what he always wanted to do, which was to write stories that would remain with the reader long after they had finished the last page.
Mark is married to Felicity, with whom he has a son, Leo, and a daughter, Imogen. Having lived in various locations including London, Malaysia, Vietnam and Japan, he is currently back in Consett...with no plans to leave any time soon.
"Shepherd's Cross" is his first novel, followed by "Career Break." He is currently working on his next book, a supernatural thriller called "Enter the Dead," which he expects to complete around Easter 2015.

The best supernatural thriller I have read for many a year. Original, emotional and frightening. I have waited a long time for a new James Herbert and I think we have finally found him. As good if not better than Shepherd's Cross. Mark White is the fresh new face of supernatural horror. Terrific!!
Not the kind of book I normally read and took a few chapters to get into it but then, wow. Had to keep reading it right to the end. Had me spellbound wondering what would happen next. Next book I read will have to be more light hearted to bring me back to earth
Man this book grabs you from p age 1 and never lets go. Thrilling plot vivid characters and written so hemorrhaging just flows. I couldn't put it down or read it fast enough highly recommend
This should really be 3.5 stars, but of course GoodReads doesn't allow half stars ...
I hate to use the term ‘page turner’, but the fact is I read this book in super quick time. So quick, in fact, that it’s only in retrospect that I noticed the weak characterisation. Protagonist Sam Railton is a little too nice; his traumatic childhood experiences are touched on but never fully investigated. Best friend Tom Jackson is a cliched salesman. Dad Willie is your classic small town bad boy.
But this doesn’t matter - the characters aren’t the driving force here, the plot is. This is true of many thrillers, I’ve noticed. The story - particularly the mystery and the big reveal - is what’s important so rather than waste wordage on establishing new and complex characters, authors tend to employ ‘stock in trade’ ones. This isn’t always the case, but it often is, and when it is it usually works. It does so here.
I try to judge books on their own terms. I wouldn’t compare Charles Dickens to Jilly Cooper, for example. Both work very well in their own field. But let’s be honest, whatever its literary merit, David Copperfield would fail miserably as a bonkbuster. This is very true of Enter the Dead. As a supernatural thriller it works very well. There are moments of edge of the seat excitement; moments of ‘I really shouldn’t have read that just before bedtime’ creepiness; moments of ‘just one more chapter’ until you realise it’s 1am on a school night and you’re halfway through the book.
This is an enjoyable read. Clever enough to keep you guessing right to the end; scary enough to get you questioning what you just saw out of the corner of your eye; and well written enough to get this atheist suspending disbelief in an afterlife. I can usually work out the twist long before it happens, but I did not see this ending coming. The book has stayed with me days after finishing it.
Read this immediately after reading shepherds cross which I loved. So although a good book, marked down because it was not as good as the first. Good plot but I did not believe in the characters as much. Will read a third if it is written
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, a good story with a supernatural twist in it. The characters were very believable and I liked the style of writing. I have already downloaded Shepherd's Cross and look forward to reading. Well done Mark White
Very good flow to the book. Likeable characters and really enjoyed reading this book, only criticism is ending too sudden. I could have easily gone on reading for a few more hours.
I could not put this book down it captured my imagination straight away I could not wait to see what happened next. I will look out for more from this author.
Fascinating insight into how you can believe and others don't
Starts of innocent enough, you forget it's a thriller and think it's about an affair. Then it takes a turn and a series of events occur each one worse than the other. Realistic characters within a believable backdrop. With a sensible twist end. Recommend, the story bounds along quickly and demands to be read to the end.
