Laura Baumbach is one of my early introduction to MM romance -- her collaboration with Josh Lanyon Mexican Heat is one of my favorites. But she hasn't been written anything for three years, and well, I guess my taste has changed since then.

The story is okay, I guess. It's about two men, early in their dating, one is gun-shy about relationship, and now the two are heading to a secluded California cabin for some quality time together. Both Jackson and Nick are likable as characters and I did enjoy the actions in the end as both are fighting to survive against the wildfire.

But I thought the sex scenes were boring -- and it took too many screen time in an already short story. Nothing new there, I skimmed most of it. I prefer to have those pages to be dedicated to Jackson and Nick finding more way to connect, especially considering Nick's reluctance towards taking a more serious step. I would love to see that more explored.

It's nice but not memorable enough. It can be read during the heavier and lengthier novels though.

This was a sweet story about two men Jackson and Nick who are already in a relationship but had not brought it to the next level yet. Jackson is a firefighter who is still recovering from a previous injury and Nick is a ER doctor. They decide to go on vacation together. Nick fights his feelings a lot in this book afraid to take it to that next level.
There was a lot of action in this Novella as well as the sweet when they worked together to get to safety. I have to admit I was on the edge of my seat while reading this hoping for the best for them.

All together I really loved this Novella!
I would definitely recommend this book!

I did not care for the author's writing style or her excessive use of the word "lover". Things like "I want you now lover" or "Put it in me lover" are big nopes for me. (It should be noted that I'm paraphrasing cuz I'm too lazy to go get my kindle and look up the actual sentences. You get the gist though)

Part of the Storming Love series, author Laura Baumbach gives us the sixth story entitled, Jackson & Nick. Jackson, a firefighter who is recovering from a serious injury to his shoulder after a fall in a collapsing building, has fallen for the ER Doc who fixed him up. While Nick is attracted to Jackson, he is also gun shy, just having come out of a harsh relationship where nothing he did was ever good enough. Plus Nick is a driven man, more like a workaholic and his reasoning for not getting further involved with the handsome firefighter is weak at best yet he clings to his busy schedule and almost OCD-like fear of commitment with incredible tenacity.

Jackson is undeterred however and arranges for he and Nick to go to a cabin in the woods to hopefully further their tentative relationship. Reluctantly Nick agrees to accompany Jackson and both find themselves in a remote location with no power, no cell service and a storm brewing that may ultimately be the end of everything—including their lives.

Is has been a long time since Laura Baumbach has written a story and I must say I was thrilled to see even a short story from this entertaining author. While both Jackson and Nick were appealing characters, there seemed to be just too little story here to really sink your teeth into. Plucking us down into the middle of their attraction to one another was done smoothly and I felt that their relationship was established quickly and succinctly. However, there was a very slow and overly detailed love scene that took up a major portion of this short story and I felt that it compromised the flow of the plot overall. For too many pages we were given a blow-by-blow account of their lovemaking, then, thrust into the panic of the impending forest fire, we are given their race against death. All in all, I felt the story became seriously rushed and the declarations both men made to each other at story’s end would have been so much more believable had we spent ore time learning about their previous dates and how the two met and became a couple.

This author can create riveting stores and while this Storming Love tale: Jackson & Nick had all the right bones to make a sweet romance come to life, the pacing and lengthy love scene meant we got too little story to invest our emotions into at the end.

For August dare = book with blue gld, etc., caegory

I read the author's wildly popular book, Mexican Heat and was hoping for a similar hot action packed ride. Sadly, didn't get it with this book and I think it was due to the MCs and, for me, the odd sequence of both the relationship and the action. Nick and JAckson, a doctor and firefighter, have only recently begun dating. Nick is gun shy and is wary about jumping in with both feet because, as the book alludes, he recently got out of a brutal two year relationship. The book begins right before they are to go on a two week vacation in the mountains for some outdoorsy type activities. Nick is jumpy and hesitant and Jackson hopes the trip away calms Nick down. Shortly after they arrive, their safety is at risk due to something that arises while on the trip. There are portions of the book that are quite riveting. The stuff that happens that next morning as they race for time. There is some rather hawt smexy time but the author uses a term that just takes me right out of the story whenever it's used "....Jackson began massaging his finger in and out of Nick's tunnel, thrusint in when he sucked the shaft down his throat and drawing out when he pulled off Nick's meat. I absolutely hate that term. Reminds of words used in romances published during the Mills and Boon era. Ick! I didn't feel the connection between Nick and Jackson. Perhaps if the book had been longer than 73 pages and I'd gotten a bit more backstory on the Nick and Jackson.

From the review:

"Another story in the Storming Love series by MLR, this one is highlighted by the fact that its author is Laura Baumbach, an author I love. Secondly, this is the first new story from that author in a long while so I was so happy to get this story and start reading. I quickly fell into the author's style of writing and the two main character's relationship, which is still in the first stages of working things out and seeing if they mesh with each other. They are at that first crucial big step, the first vacation away with each other. This time a trip with a cabin in the woods...de-stressing time for one who is a doctor and a last minute relaxing vacation for another who's been out on work related injury leave.

Baumbach lets us fall easily into their lives, showing us the rush, pressure, and fears of the 24/7 lifestyle that consumes Dr. Nicolas Kirby and the determination of Fireman Jackson Kain to have Nick put that behind him and enjoy the time together. And they do, for a while."

Jackson Kain and Dr. Nick Kirby’s relaxing vacation is promptly interrupted when dry lightening sparks a California wild fire.

Jackson & Nick is book number six in the MLR Press Storming Love Wild Fire series. The plot is a budding romance with a potent survival theme.

Jackson, a New York City fireman and Nick, a hospital trauma doctor have known each other on a professional level long before they started dating. With two very busy schedules, the purpose of their two week getaway was to hopefully build a relationship.

Jackson and Nick had one night of intimacy together before their harrowing experience began. Trapped in the woods by the fire, Jackson and Nick’s only option is to reach the lake, but Nick is afraid of deep bodies of water plus there are wild creatures trying to escape the fire as well.

Laura Baumbach has created an impressive as well as riveting short story that I enjoyed immensely.

This was a great book by a great author. I loved how Jackson and Nick were already in a relationship. There were certain parts that did seem a little off the wall but overall I really enjoyed it. The author was able to bring together two people one who had relationship issues and one who was a go getter. This whole series was definitely one of the best of the Storming Love Series.

I liked these guys and the story. A firefighter and an ER doctor, who better deserves a vacation from reality in a cabin away from it all? Of course, nature never cooperates and the fire that ensues causes damage but also helps bring these guys closer together.

Dammit! Maybe it's because it's so long in between stories. Or maybe it's because I've read so many other excellent books. But this was just a typical blah novella.
