JERRY BRIDGES was an author and conference speaker. His most popular book, The Pursuit of Holiness, has sold over one million copies. Jerry was on the staff of The Navigators for over fifty years, and currently served in the Collegiate Mission where he was involved primarily in staff development, but also served as a speaker resource to the campus ministries.
Bridges second book on Christian sanctification balances the 'law/grace' discussion to highlight man's reponsiblity and God's grace in the act of sanctification. It is a 'good' work (probably one of the better books on sanctification) but is not strong enough on grace. Bridges himself noted that he wrote his next book, "Transforming Grace" as the missing chapter from this book. A good read and recommended with "Transforming Grace" as a follow up.
I read this book years ago when my kids were small. I reread it for a Brighter Winter challenge (read two books by the same author) and now I am convinced I need to read ALL of Jerry Bridges' books. This is SUCH a great book.
It's difficult to summarize the impact this book had on my relationship with Christ. I read it at a time when my spirituality was becoming truly my own, and a big part of that battle was against a subtle form of legalism, or the "Christ plus" mentality that we need Christ's work on the cross for forgiveness, but our own good works bring about favor with God. Bridges combines the best of his two books "The Pursuit of Holiness" and "Transforming Grace" to form a synthesis of what being a Christ-follower is all about. He illuminates many of the lies we believe that weaken the power of the cross and puts forgiveness in the central place that it deserves while at the same time emphasizing the need for spiritual disciplines done with a constant spirit of dependence on God in all our good works.
I read this book at a time when I was finally realizing that I simply could not win approval through my own efforts. Mr. Bridges very kindly pointed me to the Gospel: it's by GRACE, not by works. However, he gave a very balaned view of good works coming through God's grace. So I was left with the knowledge that no, I can't do it on my own, but through the grace of God I can grow in spirtitual disciplines. A well-balanced and practical book.
Wonderful book explaining God's part and our part in holiness. Helps with an understanding of how faith and works are related so that we can understand that our works are rooted in and grow out of GOD'S work on our behalf in Christ. Worth rereading when I get into a works mentality!
