Setni #3

La planète enchantée

Rate this book

A fun space opera reminiscent of some of my favorites from the Golden Age of SF.

I give a default 2-star rating for books I don't finish, just to leave room for the possibility that they improve after the point where I gave up. I seriously doubt that's the case with this one though. I picked it up used because I'm a sucker for Daw sci-fi paperbacks and their covers, but you win some and lose some with that method.

It's impossible to know what the biggest problem is here, because there are so many contributing factors. It's an English translation of a French novel, so is the issue in Barbet's concept and writing? Or is it in the overly simple, juvenile-sounding translation? Or is it that it's the third novel in a series, but the first two haven't been translated?

Plotwise, it's not a big deal jumping in late. The Enchanted Planet summarizes everything I needed to know. It just does it in a broad, perfunctory way. But that's also how it's telling the new story and I could tell quickly that I was never going to connect to these characters or immerse myself in their adventure.

I might have enjoyed this when I was seven, but I couldn't get into it today.

2 and a half stars. It's a translation, which might have influenced my rating. It was originally written in French. It's a great idea but I didn't care that much for how the idea played out.
