Haunted Destiny

Rate this book
Between the evil and the deep blue sea…

A historic cruise ship, a haunted ship, the Celtic American Line's Destiny, sets sail from the Port of New Orleans—with a killer on board. He's known as the Archangel Killer because of the way he displays his victims in churches. And how he places a different saint's medallion on each body. No one knows exactly who he is or why he's doing this.

Jackson Crow—head of the FBI's Krewe of Hunters, a special unit of paranormal investigators—is assigned to the case, along with local agent Jude McCoy. Then Alexi Cromwell, who works in the ship's piano bar, is drawn into the situation when a victim's ghost appears to her—and to Jude. She and Jude share an attraction, and not just because of their mutual talent.

There are many suspects, but one by one they're ruled out… Or are they? In the end, Jude and Alexi have to rely on each other to catch the killer and escape his evil plans for Alexi.

This was just an OK read for me. I love this author's paranormal mysteries, but this one fell a little short for me. The setting was a haunted cruise ship. Which was fine, but I much prefer her books when they take place in New Orleans. This one didn't have the same mystique. Also, the paranormal element here, the ghosts, were actual characters that interacted with more than a few people, Which I wasn't overly crazy about.

I've also mentioned before in my reviews of this authors books, that I think her "romance" angle works best when the couple is already established (which seems to be just the novellas) Unfortunately, again with this book I felt the romance between Jude and Alexi felt forced, and mechanical, and without any passion.

All that said, I DID enjoy the mystery, and it kept me guessing with all the twits and turns and red herrings.

A Latte contains espresso, steamed milk and foam milk.

Caffeinated Latte of Haunted Destiny

The Espresso: Graham delivered an interesting murder mystery.  A serial killer known as the Archangel Killer has been killing woman along the coast and leaving them displayed at local churches. On each victim, he places a saint’s medallion. Sporadic killings and movement from city to city is making it difficult for law enforcement to capture this killer. The case was interesting, and brought us to New Orléans. The head of the Krewe of Hunters Jackson Crowe has been on the case since the first victim appeared to him as a ghost. Once again, Graham weaved in interesting details from the ship to the medallions. I always find these details to be fascinating.
The Steamed Milk: In Haunted Destiny we meet some engaging characters.  Our hero, Jude McCoy is an agent from the NOLA division of the FBI  and assigned to work with Crowe. At the latest crime scene, he spots a suspicious onlooker and they soon give chase. They witness him board the Destiny Cruise ship as it prepares to depart the port of New Orléans. Jude's success rate has caught Krewe's attention and he follows Jude onboard. There is a sadness to Jude and I enjoyed getting to know him. Alexi Cromwell, New Orléans resident and musician is an entertainer aboard the Destiny. Alexi is gifted with the ability to see the dead and is friends with a cast of ghosts who travel the Destiny. She lost her fiancé and took on this contract to avoid the memories. She is clever and quite popular with crew and passengers. She ends up aiding Jude and Jackson. We meet many colorful characters on the cruise including ghosts, crew and passengers.
The Foam Milk: Graham gives us a side dish of romance and I enjoyed time with spent with this couple.  Both Alexi and Jude have suffered loss and for the first time in a long time the other awakens feelings in them. Their relationship started slowly, sure, there was attraction but the case was at the forefront. I liked that the romance built slowly as they learned to trust each other. The case took precedence in Haunted Destiny but page time with them was sweet.

An historic ship haunted by ghostly apparitions, a lethal serial killer and a deadly storm at sea combine to make a fast-paced, action-packed romantic thriller in "Haunted Destiny" the eighteenth novel in the "Krewe of Hunters" series. It begins with Jackson Crow and Jude McCoy chasing a suspect in the Archangel case; an unidentified killer who leaves his female victims with their necks slit lying on the steps or by the altar in a church. Following their lead onto a famous cruise ship they soon discover that it's not only haunted but that their suspect is a ghost, collateral damage in the murder of his girlfriend.

With the only clue a different saint's medallion left on each dead body and a short list of suspects the Krewe of Hunters Assistant Director Jackson and FBI Agent McCoy go undercover enlisting the help of the Destiny's security team to protect the passengers while they look for the killer. What Jude McCoy doesn't expect as the intensity of their investigation escalates is to fall for Alexi Cromwell an entertainer in the ship's piano bar who is drawn to the case because of her talent for seeing ghosts, especially the one they've been chasing.

Heather Graham writes well-structured and exciting plots in the Krewe of Hunters series and "Haunted Destiny is no exception, keeping you on the edge of your seat. With twists and turns that point to any one of the suspects, tension mounts especially as Jude and Alexi grow intimately closer and she's targeted as one of the killer's next victims. Heightening the suspense, as the ship's Captain tries to keep the investigation under wraps to stop any panic a storm erupts at sea and security guards disappear.

Dark, dangerous and intriguing as the mystery grows a romance is woven into the plot between Alexi Cromwell whose heart is just beginning to mend after the loss of her fiancé and Jude McCoy who's haunted by a tragic death. Together they find healing as they work to discover the identity of the killer before he eliminates his last two targets; one of which is the woman Jude is beginning to love. Blending intrigue, mystery, the paranormal, murder and romance Heather Graham builds a story that keeps you enthralled from beginning to end.

Adding depth and passion to the plot are unforgettable characters that breathe life into an atmosphere filled with uncertainty, fear and the unbelievable. Alexi Cromwell a woman who ran from her pain and anguish after the death of her soldier and finding a home/job on the cruise liner is charming, easy-going, determined but cautious. Beautiful and empathetic she has a talent not only for seeing the ghosts that haunt the ship but making friends with them. Handsome Jude McCoy haunted by loss in his life is a tough, intense and straightforward FBI agent who relies on his gut feelings not only to help solve the case but to restart his love life. Of Native American heritage Jackson Crowe says little and is stoic, organized and efficient as he tries to unravel the motive behind the medallion left on each body while Alexi's friend, the actress Clara Avery is amiable, suspicious as well as self-protective after discovering a hidden a talent she never expected.

I liked "Haunted Destiny" a romantic suspense thriller I couldn't put down until finished.

Haunted Destiny (Krewe of Hunters #18) by Heather Graham Jude McCoy has been assigned to work with Jackson Crow on the Archangel serial Killer case when they are led to board a cruise ship but the case becomes a bit complicated when a victim’s ghost appears to Jude and a ship entertainer, Alexi Cromwell in this spine tingling paranormal suspense.

With so many suspects, Jude and Alexi will have to rely on each other to catch the killer and escape his evil plans for Alexi and the reader can’t help but get chills and become caught up in the suspense as Jude discovers that Alexi can see ghosts and what’s more…so can he. The romance in the story is sizzling and sweet as both Jude and Alexi have haunting pasts that has them remaining aloof and protecting their hearts which has emotional turmoil adding depth to these strong, captivating characters in this fast paced and smooth flowing plot that thrills readers with suspense and romance.

The story starts off with quite a bit of excitement as Jude and Jackson chase a suspect on board a cruise ship and from there the story only gets more thrilling with ghosts popping in and out, doing their best to help and the killer managing to stay one step ahead of them all. The case is also hampered by being aboard a cruise ship and trying to avoid panic among the passengers while a deadly hurricane bearing down on the ship adds to the chaos. Once again, Heather Graham provided lots of stunning and vivid details that bring the story to life and makes it so easy for the reader to become ensnared by her spine tingling suspense.

Another exhilarating experience with the Krewe of Hunters, especially as Jude and Alexi’s story is full of unexpected twists, interesting characters and a fantastic setting that adds to the case with some different complications and as usual, I can’t wait to join the Krewe for their next case.

When it comes to things that go bump in the night, author Heather Graham has a knack for making them come alive. Graham takes elements of the paranormal and weaves them into the story in such a way they appear plausible.
Narrator Luke Daniels once again demonstrates his rich talent for providing multiple voices. His mannerisms enhances this tantalizing tale. His timing and tone are spot on.
The historic cruise ship setting is perfect for the mix of ghosts and a serial killer. With an eye for detail, Graham draws listeners/readers into the setting so clearly you can practically feel the ocean breeze on your face.
Graham’s characters are well-developed and very likable. Their interaction with the paranormal seems real. The story moves at a quick pace with a number of twists and turns to keep you guessing.
HAUNTED DESTINY is an alluring tale of murder and mystery with a good dose of romance and ghosts woven in for just the right measure of a well-balanced story. While this story is a part of the Krewe of Hunters series, it can be listened to/read on its own.

The mystery really kept me guessing and the romance was sweet. But with all the mishaps and violence aboard ship, I'm having second thoughts about ever taking a cruise. :D I enjoyed the use of ghosts in the story and how Alexi handled her ability. There were a few coincidences and unlikelihoods but overall the story worked and it had twists and tuns that kept me reading.

Jude and Alexi were good together though the romance moved unbelievably fast. After a week, they're talking about moving in together and where they'll live. *rolls eyes* The focus of the book was on the mystery though, and not the romance.

Also good together were Jude and Jackson. I can't remember (literally can't remember; he might have been in a recent book and I just don't recall) when Jackson appeared last so I enjoyed seeing them work together and getting to know him better.

In all, a pleasant story and good addition to the series.

This was a good story with a fun blend of history, romance and intrigue. The ending, as in last page and half, was beautiful and probably one of my favorite closure moments. This was the first book where we did not see a lot of time with other Krewe members, but through conversation and technology they were still felt. The tie in to the military was poignant and I loved how interactive the ghosts were in this story. This story introduces some new people as well and we find a few more who can see ghosts...whether they know it or not!

Recommendation: Yes, pick it up for a mystery involving paranormal elements, historical flair and the romantic side of the plot.

Haunted Destiny is the eighteenth book in the Krewe of Hunters series by Heather Graham and published in May of 2016. The plot centers around Jude McCoy - FBI Special Agent of the local FBI field office in New Orleans, Louisiana - and Alexi Cromwell - piano bar singer and entertainer aboard the cruise ship Destiny.

This book also forms the first book in the next trilogy within the series, with each book in the trilogy set on a cruise ship belonging to Celtic American Cruise-Line company. This one is set on the cruise ship called, Destiny. First trilogy consisted of the ninth book The Night is Watching; the tenth book The Night is Alive; the eleventh book The Night is Forever. Second trilogy consisted of the 12th book The Cursed, 13th book the Hexed and 14th book The Betrayed. Third Trilogy consisted of the 15th book The Silenced, 16th book The Forgotten and the 17th book The Hidden.

Krewe are a secret FBI unit with each member of the unit honing a particular psychic talent of their own, making them the paranormal investigating team. This unit was created to deal with murders having supernatural undertones and paranormal activities. Headed by paranormal investigator Adam Harrison, this elite unit is called on to solve cases linked to historical and paranormal mystery involving legendary crime and serial killings, war events and hauntings. The Krewe are divided into three distinct groups. The first group is led by Jackson Crow, who is also the Assistant Director of the Krewe, and called as the original Krewe of Hunters; the second group is led by Texas Ranger Logan Raintree and called as the Texas Krewe; the third group is Yankee Krewe, based in NYC, overseen by Jackson Crow. A possibility of a fourth group in Miami, FL is touched upon in the 17th book The Hidden.

Jackson Crowe, Assistant Director of the Krewe of Hunters, partnering with FBI Special Agent Jude McCoy from the local field office, pursues the serial killer who had killed eleven people so far. That pursuit leads him to the cruise ship Destiny, that is already famed to be haunted.

Alexi Cromwell works aboard the cruise ship as an entertainer and singer at the Piano Bar. She gets drawn in to the investigation when one of the victim's ghost seeks her out for help. Now she teams with Jude McCoy to uncover the killer as well as the reasoning behind is kills, hoping to save future victims.

When Heather introduces Alexi Cromwell, she shows her as a person still mourning over the loss of her fiancée. But the minute Alexi meets Jude, sparks fly everywhere. It's like she goes from ice to fire in an instant. Normally Heather's heroines are not like that. Alexi is definitely a different kind.

For the first time, Heather Graham lists out the characters that appear in her plot ahead of time. So it was easy to anticipate them. However, I did feel that some parts of the plot dragged on a bit. Could have made it without those parts as well.

I believe this is the first book that is entirely set on a cruise ship in this Krewe of Hunters Series. In the 7th book Unspoken, she did show about treasure hunters in the sea, but the plot isn't completely set on a boat.

As always other Krewe agents who aid the investigators in this case are - Angela Hawkins from the original Krewe and wife of Jackson Crow.

I see a pattern to Heather Graham's stories in the Harrison Investigations and Krewe of Hunters series, apart from the presence of ghosts and spirits. Usually the stories revolve around historical inferences, somehow connecting the past to the present either by way of characters or incidents and they involve hidden tunnels be it in cemetery or old houses or mortuaries. Always has one new pair of Krewe of Hunters or Harrison Investigations investigators. I wonder if Heather will add a third twist to the plot.

As always there is historical and paranormal references from past are given to the reader with artifacts, events and places. This time there is a page at the end where it gives reader an opportunity to either join a book club and win books, or buy a book and get a few free. Surprisingly there are no grammatical or character or location errors in this book. For once her books seem to have been edited well.

A very good mingle of murder and mystery; past and present; history and analysis; and above all romance and love. Another successful thriller in the series of books under Krewe of Hunters by Heather Graham that is an easy ready and still enjoyable. A tale that captures one easily till the end.

Spoiler Alerts:

1. Plot Reveals:
a. Alexi Cromwell has a large family - her parents, a brother who is an artist, a sister Sienna who is a doctor. Curiously enough only Sienna's name is mentioned in the plot and none of the other family members. May be we will see Sienna again, hence her mentioned explicitly.
b. Clara Avery, the soprano in the ship, Destiny's, presentation of Les Miserables also can see ghosts. Will Heather have a story for her?
c. Jude McCoy becomes officially part of Krewe of Hunters at the end of the plot.
d. One of the songs that Alexi Cromwell sings along with other entertainers in the plot is Picture (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picture...), a duet by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow. This was the first song that I had heard on radio the first month I landed in US in 2001. I hadnt been able to listen to any music or watch any TV until then as things were still being settling for me in that life. But I can never forget the day I heard these tunes coming across the radio waves.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKFx0...

2. Sub Plots:
a. In the 16th book The Forgotten, Dr. Phil Kinny seemed have paranormal abilities. Will he be a main character in another book?
b. In eleventh book, The Night Is Forever, Dustin Blake was part of an FBI team consisting of Grant Shelby, Cindy Greenstreet and Jerry Gunter. I am wondering why Heather Graham had mentioned their complete names as well as a brief intro, albeit as part of the conversation. Will they resurface in future plots is something we have to wait and see.
c. Dustin Blake has a sister Rayna Blake who is a Nashville sensation - a country music singer. I wonder if Heather Graham will use her as a lead character in a future book.
d. Katie O'Hara and David Beckett are two characters in The Cursed plot. And a history into their background paused me to think they might be characters from another of Heather Graham book. I was pretty sure they weren't from Krewe of Hunters or Harrison Investigation series. A little dig on google pointed me to Ghost Shadow, the first book in Bone Island Series by Heather Graham published in 2010. Having not yet read that series, I am curious if Hannah O'Brien or Liam Beckett, David's brother, appear in that book as well.
e. Jane Everett and Sloan Trent were part of Team Two: Texas Krewe. But in The Betrayed, Heather mentions that they were going to be permanent members of the Yankee Krewe. Have to read the rest of the books to know if that is where she sends them.

I enjoyed this modern story with a gothic twist. Ghosts, and more ghosts daily sail on an ocean liner called the Drstiny. There is also a suspected twisted serial killer using churches to display his female victims, and a Catholic medallion left around their necks. He is called the Archangel. The special branch of the. FBI, that works with the paranormal , is also on board to trap the killer. It has intense moments, a raging storm, and a hurricane developed as they are out of port, leaving them pretty much on their own. The author builds the anxiety, as men are checked off, and passengers too. They are looking for someone who could have been in all the cities the killer has, already hit. The reader gets a closer look at each possible suspect. I caught a hint in a slip off a tongue that led me to who I hoped was the killer. The statement could be taken two ways, and everyone took it innocently. The build up to the end was fast and furious. The murderer becomes more bold , and the clock is ticking to stop another death. I really enjoyed the characters. Alexi was my favorite, trying to recover from her own grief, she put herself out there , for so many others, and was brave, and fierce. Her friend Clara, was nice and had a goal , to be on Broadway, and a star, but she was also nice to other people, but easily frightened. Jackson Crowe, and Jude McCoy, are both protective, and very likeable, as the agents, but the ship is huge to cover, and one thing after another plagues the voyage. Their is a romance, but I will not spoil that, nor the ending. This book is for those who like a little paranormal, with their murder. The ghosts were a great touch.

First, I had a hard time deciding which shelves to use for this book. Somewhere I saw it listed as a cozy, but it's different from most cozy series.

The Krewe of Hunters was formed in book 1 of the series as a special section of the FBI. The agents were chosen because of their multiple talents but the one thing they have in common is that all of the agents are also able to see ghosts. Some places to which they are sent refer to them as "ghost hunters" but they are not. The ghosts aid them by showing them things, pointing them in the right direction to solve the murders.

I liked the first book in the series better than the succeeding volumes because when they are formed there is stress placed upon their functioning as a "team". In the later novels, some, but not all of the members of this team are involved. Jackson Crowe (the leader), picks new people to aid in investigations which seems like he is forming a "new" team in each book. In the first book Jackson tells his team that they ARE a team and all work together. So I was disappointed when only certain members of that team are involved in the investigations.

This novel is set on a ship, The Destiny and this group is chasing a serial killer in an attempt to stop his spree. A storm that keeps them from putting into port adds to the suspense. The ghosts on the ship help Jackson and the new members on this team. Before you read this, I suggest that you read the first book to understand the concept behind these teams.

If possible I would have given this book 3 and 1/2 stars.

When it comes to things that go bump in the night, Heather Graham has a knack for making them come alive....no pun intended. Graham takes the paranormal and weaves it into the story in such a way that the reader starts to believe it's plausible. After all doesn't everyone see and talk to dead people? I have read all of the Krewe of Hunters series and found that this one was different from the others. It was missing the constant action, sharp edges in the story, and turbulent emotions. Taking place on a cruise ship restricts the environment of the action...the cast of characters...the possibilities to investigate and especially when the storm hits the agents have to use the old fashion way to investigate the murders. A lot more attention is also paid to the living and entertainment on the ship. I found that the story line became a little repetitive. The characters manner of speech and rigid ways made it sound more like a story from the other era....which may appeal to other readers. It's not a bad book but just not something I would read again.

Haunted Destiny by Heather Graham

A Krewe of Hunters paranormal romantic suspense. The ghosts are plentiful and friendly in this mystery on the seas. Seeing ghosts is not an anomaly for the Krewe, their family, friends and lovers. And it appears to be catching! Would I want this ability to see and interact with ghosts? In Graham's Krewe world they are mostly friendly and helpful so sure, why not?
This mystery is immediately engaging and ultimately entertaining if a bit predictable as the 18th in the series.
A fast read.

It was OK and definitely not my favorite of the series. The romance was a very rushed and forced. I'm not sure I bought into the fall into forever in a matter of days and the ending was kind of dumb. I think it was a bit slow at times and I missed having more of the Krewe working the case. It did keep me guessing until close to the end, so that was a bonus.

I devour Heather Graham's novels. Yes they are formulaic but she is a master at her craft. Situations and characters are sketched succinctly and clearly. The pace moves and builds without sacrificing the vivid world and human portraits she so deftly creates. The suspension of disbelief is complete. If ghosts, serial killers and romance are your thing you'll be craving more.

I didn't care for the quickly wrapped up story ending or the vague tension that deigned this a thriller. Too light for my taste.
Characters felt flat and predictable.
Wish the plot was more invested in the "haunting" factors the book blurb hinted at.
A few ghosts, with cardboard pasts does not a para/thriller make.
Read it all, but felt like wasted time.

Another great story

Enjoyed this Krewe of Hunters story set on an old, restored cruise ship. It reminded me of the Queen Mary and since I love that ship and the Krewe series, it was right up my alley.

Posted on What I'm Reading

I have decided to try the audiobook selection at my local library, and I happen to find Haunted Destiny by Heather Graham. I figured what the heck, I haven't read/listen to a suspense book in a while. The one Krewe of Hunters I did enjoy, so why not try another, which brings us to the Haunted Destiny. The narrator for this particular story was Luke Daniels. I have to say he did alright. It took me a little time to get use to his reading style, but once I did he did an all right job.

Haunted Destiny is 18 in the Krewe of Hunters series. Don't worry if you haven't read any of the previous books, you will be fine. Yes, you will see Jackson Crow on this case, but he's not the hero of the story. Nope that honor goes to the local area agent Jude McCoy. They basically are trying to find the Archangel Killer, they believe he's on the Destiny. They're not sure what to think of Alexi Cromwell, after all she has a special gift. Yep, she can talk with ghost. Both Jude and Alexi have suffer some kind of lost in their lives which kind of draws them together. They both have a special kind of gifts, but one doesn't realize he has a gift.

Haunted Destiny wasn't a bad read. It took a little time to get into the story. It wasn't until it got to middle that Haunted Destiny started to get interesting. Yes, once people started going missing and deaths happen it definitely picked up. I liked how the ghost of the ship were willing to help Jude and Alexi catch the Archangel Killer. Like I said not a bad read.

‘Adam Harrison put together a group of people with special skills … These are their stories.’

Hunted Destiny is the eighteenth book in the Krewe of Hunters series by Heather Graham...
Okay, so if you’re into crime-solving with a supernatural twist, then Heather Graham’s Krewe of Hunters series is like comfort food for your spooky-loving soul. Imagine a team of FBI agents who can see and communicate with ghosts - but instead of it being all doom and gloom, it’s got this cozy, slightly romantic vibe mixed in with the mystery.
Each book focuses on a different agent, so you get fresh characters and settings every time, but there’s still that familiar “Krewe family” feel. The cases range from creepy old mansions to haunted battlefields, and Ms. Graham is really good at weaving in bits of history without making it feel too ‘heavy’.
Are the plots sometimes a little predictable? Sure. But honestly, that’s part of the charm - you’re there for the atmosphere, the ghostly encounters, and the slow-burn romances as much as the whodunit. It’s the kind of series you can dip in and out of without feeling lost, although saying that, reading the books in consecutive order gives you a bigger picture as well as providing a nice sense of connection between the characters.
If you like your mysteries with a dash of paranormal, a sprinkle of romance, and a cast of likable, slightly quirky investigators - then the Krewe of Hunters is a fun, binge-worthy ride. Perfect for late-night reading with a cup of tea.
Happy Reading… 👻

Jude McCoy is working the FBI's New Orleans office when a woman is found dead and it is believed to be the work of the Archangel Killer, who has murdered woman in several states. At the crime scene he spots a suspicious looking man and, with Jackson Crow, he follows this man to the cruise ship Destiny. They are sure he boarded, but the can't find him. At the same time, Alexi Cromwell who performs in the ship's piano bar, receives a warning from a man she doesn't know.

The two agents board the ship just before sailing. They go undercover, but Alexi quickly figures out who they are and why they are there. Like so many of the members of the Krewe, she sees and speaks with ghosts. She introduces Jude to all of the ship's ghosts, even enlisting their assistance.

As they race to find the killer before he can strike again, even Mother Nature seems to have turned against them and there is jeopardy everywhere.

This is a classic Heather Graham romantic suspense. I really liked both Jude and Alexi. While they have history and baggage in their life, they are not Dickensian characters weighed down by their past. It gives them depth without angst and I appreciated that. Good suspense should be enough angst for a reader.

Haunted Destiny by Heather Graham is a paranormal romantic suspense tale. I enjoyed it. Ghosts from past and present murders come together to help the Krewe find the killer. The serial killer is on board the Destiny. A cruise ship that has a bit of a haunted past with ghosts that have stayed on rather than passing. An entertainer, can see and hear the ghosts. In fact, she's friends with the ghosts of Destiny. Then, she meets a new one, and witnesses the serial killer, too. Agent, Jude McCoy and his new boss, have the same special gift as Alexi. Together they work on the ship trying to narrow down the suspects. The beginning and middle were addictive. The ending made me cry, a good cry. I fell in love with this story. Heather Graham has once again, captured my heart, soul, and full-attention with this haunting yet deadly read. Overall, I highly recommend it to all.

I bought this book from Harlequin. This is my voluntary review.
