Ever since I learned to read, I have loved books.

For almost as long, I have made up tales.

I’ve written horrible poetry, better short stories, adequate commercials, educational and industrial film narration, and very forgettable screenplays. Once I learned how to make a story last longer than a few paragraphs I moved on to novels, and there I stayed. I've written forty-three to date.

In addition to my website, I have a (sporadic) blog at http://maggiemackeever.wordpress.com/

With her frizzy red head that can't be tamed and her pale skin and freckles, the heroine knows she can never be considered a beauty. But she has a tenacious thirst for knowledge and the stubbornness and drive to learn no matter silly things like propriety or 'lady-like' behavior. Now that her father is dead she is the sole possessor of her families rich and extensive knowledge of supernatural forces. She also knows that a particular artifact has been stolen the same night her father supposedly died in an accident. So, she doesn't waste time is seeking out help from an old family friend. She knows for a fact this man is a vampire despite his halfhearted refusals and the fact that he seems to follow none of the rules previously laid out to her on the undead. He doesn't shy away from garlic, he possesses a reflection and breath and he's tanned for goodness sake. But he's a vampire, she knows it. And she needs his help. She must see the artifact returned and she has suspicious the man her father wished her to marry is the man who stole it.

The hero is stunned by the forthright and brash manner of the elfling standing before him. He's never encountered a woman quite like her. She is brutally honest and full of questions about his nature-not shying away from him at all. He knows it dangerous to indulge her but he finds himself captivated by her. He denies his nature at the start but eventually, after realizing that in addition to her adventurous and fool hearted sense of independence, she also possesses the ability to block his mind reading while also being able to read his mind. She is also quite feisty and honest in her desire for him. He finds himself lost in the life she brings to his world. But he knows he is also keeping her close because she holds a lot of power over him and his kind with her knowledge of their world and artifacts. He's pressured by his fellows to either turn her or wipe her memories but he can do neither. He knows it's a risk he's taking because his master is an evil and selfish woman who will kill the heroine if she finds out how he feels towards her. But he's already fallen for her and she for him.

I was enchanted by the almost instantly easy-going relationship between the hero and heroine. They seemed to fall quite nicely into a friendship of sorts that allowed both parties to understand and predict the others actions and moods. The hero could see the heroine's stubbornness getting her into trouble and the fact that she spoke before putting much thought behind the words. And the fact that she was adamant about her freedom and her refusal to accept the limitations of her sex. He also adored her honesty and her brash mouth and the fact that she didn't treat him like a monster but rather seemed eager to know everything she could about him. The heroine was a funny character that could grate on your nerves after a while but at heart she was curious and because she didn't consider herself desirable, she was determined to use knowledge as her weapon. The overall plot was good, not unique but enjoyable. It was historical and actually a lot of the slang and the phrases were lost on me but I didn't mind. Interesting book and one I've had in my to-read pile for sometimes-glad to finally have given it a chance. It didn't disappoint.

Written by Maggie MacKeever, this is the first novel in a series about Vampires in Scotland.

Before I go any further, THIS IS NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN, MATURE AUDIENCES ONLY, AND BELOW, THERE BE SPOILERS.

So, this is written in what I consider to be the standard historical-fantasy-rom-com style. This is to say that sometimes what they say/do doesn’t make sense at all, but it is highly entertaining. Emily has come to a castle in hopes of getting Val, the vampire, on her side for some help.

Little did Emily know that Val, old vampire that he may be, would end up stealing her heart and her his.

This was just a fun read, something that I pickup up for a dollar (the original release’s cover is so funny and cute! I am so happy I didn’t find the new addition, as I think I would have passed it over).

Kidnapping, shapeshifters, multiple vampires, and lots of romance, this was a fun little read on a Saturday for me, and I recommend it for any rom-com fan who wants something with fangs.

Great historical vampire romance, the author writes fluidly and its an easy read with a few laughs thrown in. If you like either genres - and dont mind reading Scottish accents- you cant go far wrong with this book.

Review was from 2009.... I'm finally starting to update goodreads as well!
