OHKUBO Atsushi

Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.

Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.

Don't mind me, I'm just casually re-reading the entire manga for the 5th time or so because A) it's one of my comfort series and I need all the comfort I can get right now, B) I own the entire thing physically so it's right there, and C) everyone is talking about fall/ Halloween reads and SE fits that to a T.

Gonna give all the volumes 5 stars as a default. There's plenty I could complain about if I wanted, namely the unnecessary fanservice/ weird sexualization of teen characters, but I'm not gonna do that right now. It pops up rarely enough that I can just pretend it doesn't exist.

Spirit and sid "arrest" Stein but they don't believe he's the killer. So they let him and Marie go and find the real killer.

Black star and tsubaki leave death City for a bit of a vacation and crona leaves as well before she can be found out to be working for Medusa.

Maka and death the kid are dispatched to a spooky factory where Maka learns to overcome her fear and becomes even more powerful.

Two witch agents are found out to be at the school, kim and Jackie. They flee before anyone can talk to them out of fear. Turns out that the one who told shinigami who the secret witches were was Medusa and she wants to make a deal.

Still getting complicated with Stein's increasing madness and it'll be interesting to see what Medusa has up her sleeve.

On to the next book.

This is the longest arc I've seen in a manga to date. Please stop iiiiiiit.
There's major art problems. The new style is weird and doesn't translate well. There's also multiple times that in one frame the characters coat is shredded and then goes back to being perfectly fine (with no flash backs) in the next frame as if that never happened. It's things like that that bother me.

Maka and Soul, gotta love them.
The whole scene with the clown was almost too short for the emount of change it made?
And Kim...oh Kim, I wanna protect you, please.
Such Chaos with Arachne and Medusa and Shibusen and just....I want it to get better but everything feels like it's just getting worse..

The Clown was easily the best part of this volume, it had such a cool and creepy design as it seemed to be mismatch of random parts. The way it moved and fought was pretty cool to and the fact we never get a clear answer about what exactly it is besides the fact it came from Madness makes it more Lovecraftian and I do hope their are most of these things in the future.

the series is really starting to take itself seriously at this point, and starts minimizing moments of random sexualization of the girl characters.

The Soul Eater anime is what got me back into the medium. I grew up watching Sailor Moon and Pokémon, but when I grew into a tween, I said I didn’t like anime in order to fit in with other kids at school. Kids are going to be shitty to each other whether they like it or not, so my efforts were fruitless. By the time I was a senior in high school, I stopped trying to make myself palatable to others and focused on being happy. Took me a bit, but getting back into the stuff I really enjoyed helped a lot with self-acceptance. Soul Eater isn’t the best anime OR manga, but it was instrumental in allowing myself to like things that I like.

I liked the show, but its disappointing Power of Friendship ending directed me towards the manga. Overall, I’d say the 25-volume series is better, even though it diverts pretty hard from the anime about halfway through. The end of the anime focused more on the Kishin’s threat to the school. The end of the manga however focused on the corruption of Justin and Stein and Maka’s effort to learn Genie Hunter. I liked the manga more, but the resolution of the series goes from Maka learning one slash to her learning, well, a bigger slash. My biggest criticism of Shonen series is its reliance on tropes.

What I like about both series is the resonance part of the story. I’ll admit that Soul Eater stands out from other series like Blue Exorcist because of its fun worldbuilding and rules. The meister-weapon pairings are all about characters with differences coming together to confront their world’s problems. While I think the manga explores this more than the anime, it still has some of the same filler pitfalls that other series do. I think the gender-swap escapade that gives Blackstar tits embodies this more than anything else. Still, I recommend Soul Eater to anyone who wants a solid, above average manga with some flaws.

Soul Eater, Vol. 11 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next five chapters (40–44) of the on-going manga series.

Spirit Albarn, Sid Barrett, and Marie Mjolnir tell Franken Stein their belief that he is not Joe Buttataki's killer and Spirit Albarn instructs Franken Stein to leave Death City with Marie Mjolnir to find the real culprit.

Meanwhile, Black Star leaves Death City with Tsubaki Nakatsukasa, who suggests going to her parents' home. Eruka Frog arrives at Crona's room to instruct Crona to leave the Death Weapon Meister Academy (DWMA).

The following day, Maka Albarn is dispatched with Death the Kid to investigate a demonic factory. Inside the factory, Maka Albarn encounters a clown that is a product of the madness Asura created throughout the world. The clown attempts to overwhelm Maka Albarn with madness, but Soul Evans helps her in finding the courage to overcome her fear, vastly increasing her power and allowing her to defeat the clown.

At the academy, two witch agents are found: Kim Diehl, a secret witch, flees DWMA away with her partner, Jacqueline O'Lantern Dupré, and the two are accepted into Arachnophobia. Shinigami then learns that the witches' locations would be disclosed by Medusa, who offers a deal to reveal the location of Arachne's headquarters.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Atsushi Ōkubo. It centers mainly on the mission that Maka Albarn and Death the Kid to investigate a demonic factory that is run by a mad clown, which is a product of madness that Asura created and how Maka Albarn overcome her fears and become stronger. Meanwhile, the DWMA is trying to infiltrate the organization of Arachnophobia.

All in all, Soul Eater, Vol. 11 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

Another great volume! I loved Maka's battle against the clown, and Soul helping her out. They are my favorites! Also, can we talk about Blair kicking ass during that battle as well? She's sick as hell, I think she might have just moved higher up on my favorite character list.
I'm worried for Crona, though, poor guy. Looking forward to what happens to him!
