Do not stray from the path.
There is magic in the forest, a serenity that calls to your soul.
The woods may turn your head, they may keep you forever…

Scarlett knows no peace. Fear and disappointment are her constant companions and hope is simply a word. A stepfather who watches her every move with desire, a mother who spends her days and nights in an alcoholic stupor, and a cottage too small to escape from it all. The forest is the only place Scarlett can breathe, the only place to run, until the final straw, until the final betrayal. Scarlett makes a choice that will change her life…
She steps off the path…

“The woods can turn your head… It’s easy to lose yourself in amongst the trees and you, my sweet Scarlett, are a delicious treat the woods would love to keep forever.”

Scarlett's Path is the first novella in a series of dark fairy tale retellings set in a world beyond the veil. It's a coming of age fantasy adventure, featuring werewolves and shifters and enough romance and action to keep you turning the pages.

I love finding a new genre to fall in love with. My latest to add to the constantly growing list falls under twisted fairy tales. I haven’t read many, but the ones that I have read I’ve really enjoyed. When I found out that the Amos Cassidy duo were putting out a series of novellas based on these timeless tales I couldn’t wait to get their spin on them.

You probably guessed that Riding Red got its name from Little Red Riding Hood. The tale spun here is nothing like the one that you remember from your childhood though, and that’s the point. In this adult version there’s no grandmother, but a alcoholic mother, a pure evil step-father, a town full of judgmental people and more than enough reason for Scarlett to want to run away from home.

The forest is full of magic and Scarlett finds more than she bargained for when she runs into Red. Secrets are revealed, things aren’t always what they seem and the ‘Big Bad Wolf’ isn’t necessarily the scariest thing in the forest. There were a couple of twists that I didn’t expect but I totally loved.

The only complaint I have about Riding Red is that I wanted more. It worked great as a novella, but it would have been even better if it would have been a little bit longer. I know, I’m greedy. *sigh* I guess I can’t complain too much because the authors have already given us titles for the next 3 in the Tales from Beyond the Veil series. Tainted Snow is next, followed by Sleeping with Beauty and Beastly Heart.

Best yet!! I love retelling s best of all. This was just what WANTED.

My absolute favorite and will read again and again. I strongly recommend! It has outstanding qualities. The characters are wonderful and surprising and multi-dimensional. The writing is luring, engaging, and well-crafted enough to keep me interested from cover to cover and beyond. The plot is astonishing with twists and turns weaved into a well thought and planned story. There’s no pretense and romance was well balanced and done entirely correctly with properly distributed amounts of hints, behaviors and incredible, undeniable chemistry. Predictability is at an all-time low. With the exception of series based books that follow the same path but are just as good. Overall, Favorite, must read again, recommend!!!

this is book one of the series and I found it a very easy read. I may check out the remaining books in this series just to find out how it ends. I would recommend this book and it does contain some adult language and or sexual content.

Scarlett lives with only her mom since her father left years ago. She never knew where he went just that he was gone and her mom changed into a lost soul. The townsfolk helped her out some until her mom brought home Fredrick on her 16th birthday. Scarlett watched as her mom went farther and farther down into the whoring world Fredrick ruled and tried to keep herself safe from him. She escapes to the woods several times and finds a friend named Red. When her mom kicks her out of the house, her whole world changes. She finds she is not who she thought and she finds a strength she did not know she had. Can't wait for more!!!

I'm not really sure how to rate this one. It's a novella and a short, fast read. There wasn't much world building and I have so many questions about the main character and the environment she leaves in. I never got a clear picture of her in regards to age or appearance. Is this because it was a novella and I'll get the info in further books? I don't know. I wasn't pulled in enough to be compelled to continue. I have read books in the past from these authors and I enjoyed them. I'm obviously in the minority here so I'll just mark this one down to not mixing with me instead of a being bad book.

I was given this for a honest review.

Well Scarlett is definately a fighter with what she has had to deal with. Her mother is basically a prostitute and her pimp is her boyfriend who has sights on Scarlett. She escaped into the woods which she has been warned about and there is the beginning of something new. There she meets Red.
Red is keeper of the veil and shifter who not only takes her heart but takes her into the The Veil to her true home. There she finds a new family but also betrayal but also a wrong finally put right.
Can't wait to read more from the Veil.
