This is a review of the entire series [I'd rate the Series 4 out of 5 stars]:

I've been reading Banker's Ramayana series for 3 months straight, and it's finally over. [I read Uttar Kaand before the last two books, because I never had and never will have the stomach to digest those events as the end of the story of Rama and Sita]

Now, three months, 8 books and almost 4000 pages later, this leaves me feeling nostalgic and bittersweet. I am glad I decided to save these books for the end and not the Uttar Kaand.

This is easily the most engaging version of Ramayana that I have ever read - it stays true to the spirit of the story and the characters. Rama - the mortal, rendered extraordinary not because of celestial gifts but because of his strength of character; a true warrior of dharma. Sita, a woman of such resilience and purity of heart that she is no less than a Devi. Hanuman, a true devotee, one who finds his shakti in complete devotion. Lakshmana, a loving brother, a man with the strengths of a warrior and the weaknesses that come when you love someone fiercely. I was thrilled to see this version of Sita - she is no meek voiceless woman who is only about sacrifices. Here is a woman who is a fearless warrior, a woman in love, an intellectual, a woman of unparalleled strength and self respect who is unafraid to speak her mind. By far my favourite depiction of Sita.

In the first 5 books, I also found pleasure in reading about the wonderfully sketched characters of Koushalya, Jambhavan, Dasharatha and many, many others. I loved that Banker took his time with the story and its characters, sketching them with such loving detail and not simply putting up unidimensional figures of kings and queens and devas.

The beauty of mythology lies in the fact that every story is born out of a story. In these 4000 pages, Banker has the luxury of words and uses them to delve into all these layers of stories - past, present and future - stories of yugas past and yet to come.

What saddened me was to see that he decided to do away with all this in King of Ayodhya - the book that makes up the climax of this epic. It seemed rushed, he took way too many liberties with the facts for me to make my peace with, and didn't really give enough time to the key events that make up the climax. Too much is happening in the last 50 pages and it just leaves you feeling incomplete.

Nevertheless, I recommend these books to one and all - to enjoy the epic that is Ramayana, to fall in love with maryada purushottam Rama, to come to revere Hanuman and fall in love with little Sakra. I would suggest you ditch the last two books in the series (Vengeance of Ravana and Sons of Sita), it's not worth it. Read the first six and remember to relish and enjoy every word of it.

Now that I am done with the series, I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said that this is the closest I have come to feeling the way I did when I finished reading HP7. Sigh.

This book wasn't half as good as the first 2. it is lengthy and exhausting.
