Learned a lot from this great book! My kids and I met the author in person. She wrote this book (and others) from experience since her son was part of the Fife and Drum Corps.

Phyllis has written a very complete history of the Colonial Williamsburg Fife and Drum Corps, as well as providing information about military musicians in general. She also explains in great detail how the musicians are recruited, trained, and move through several levels of expertise before they become public performers. The author is well qualified to tell this story because her son was a member of the corps until he went away to college. A good read.
