“My name is Larkspur, and I am an Elemental.”

My people use the power of the earth to sustain life and defy our enemies. I should be at my father's side as a royal princess. But as a half-breed, bastard child, that isn't going to happen.

In a world of lava and fire, I am about to face my hardest trial yet. Not one of strength, or power, but intrigue and manipulation. However, my tolerance level for anyone outside of my family is at an all-time low, and the queen who rules the Pit expects complete obedience.

As Ash’s life is held in the balance, I have just three days to prove his innocence and mine. This place holds more than a scorching heat; new foes, traitors, and creatures from the depths of the lava are all trying to keep us from surviving.

The only question left. . . Can I get us all out without being burned alive?

Welcome to the Pit.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.

I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)

Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.

I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)

As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.

Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.

Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.

It’s a good thing that Shannon Mayer’s books are calorie-free because I’d be breaking out my fat pants right about now after reading thirteen of her titles in eight months. Her writing style is irresistible for adrenaline addicts like me, and this series is even more so than her RYLEE ADAMSON novels on account of the nominal romantic thread. The only thing that ran hotter in FIRESTORM than the lava and Salamanders was the treachery.

This installment had a full house worth of plot lines with a queen out for blood after the deaths of her Enders, murdering firewyrms running rampant and cloaked figures with secret agendas. Every turn Lark took in the Pit was rife with danger, and her lack of a verbal filter certainly didn’t help the situation any either. Discovering who the real villain was proved to be as galling as navigating the mountain’s treacherous labyrinth of tunnels.

Larkspur’s evolution has been slow going, but I think that’s intentional on the author’s part. The ELEMENTAL world is a hazardous place with four powerful families competing for dominance which makes choosing who to trust the largest challenge of all. However, there was some forward mouvement where Lark’s magic was concerned that left me hungry for the next book, but also a little scared of what kind of impact it might have on the heroine’s psyche.

Mayer lured me with her action, hooked me with her protagonist, and reeled me in with her secondary characters. Ash spent most of this story locked in a cell, so that freed up space for Cactus to strut. I really don’t know which out of the two I prefer as a match for the lead; I’m just praying that no angst will be involved. Peta, Lark’s familiar, was easily my favourite ally. Her dialogue was entertaining, and I loved their relationship’s progression.

FIRESTORM brought the heat to the ELEMENTAL series!

I am in love with a cat!

The main reason this book got 4 stars (+0.5 form the last one) is PETA!
I love cats, and she is awesome!

Even Lark is getting more and more bad-ass, so yay Shannon Mayer, you're making this series better and better.

As with the other books in the Elemental series, FIRESTORM is packed with action, danger and our favorite Elemental Larkspur.

There is no time lost between the end of book 2 and the start of book 3. Lark and Ash is taken into custody and brought to the pit for judgement. Things are defiantly not easy going, but Lark kicks ass and saves the day as usual. I was pleasantly surprised by the twists and turns that Mayer threw at us and I really enjoyed the continuous danger. Although there was no downtime for Lark she still made new allies and stayed true to herself.

I really enjoyed the secondary characters in FIRESTORM. We met Peta in BREAKWATER, but we get to know her even more in book 3. I LOVE her, she is awesome and I can't wait to see her again in the next book. I don't want to reveal any of the other characters I enjoyed as I think it might spoil a few parts of the book if I do, but one person in particular and their family quickly grew.

I was really glad that FIRESTORM didn't end on a cliffhanger, but I still wanted to read more when it was over. WINDBURN can't come soon enough in my opinion and Shannon thankfully writes fast so maybe I won't have to wait too long..

Still no romance.

It had a good story and I liked it. It kept me reading and it had a lot of creative world-building.

Unfortunately the construction showed itself to be a bit repetitive...after the water world we are now in the fire pit. And Lark is supposed to do her quest there as well.
The next will be something with wind.

Don't get me wrong, not a bad book. It was enjoyable enough, though I kind of missed the romance, that normally comes with the deal.

It just lacks that certain something that makes books in this genre outstanding.
A bit run-of-the-mill, that one.

Swept me away!

This series does things to my heart that only the most amazing series can do. Firestorm was no different, and if it's possible for this series to get better, this is the best one yet. I laughed, stressed, held my breath, and well up with tears.

Larkspur's journey takes her and Ash into the Pit this time to be tried for the deaths of the Enders she killed during her quest to find the cure for the lung burrowers raging through The Rim. Queen Fiametta demands their lives in exchange for her Enders', and it seems like a hopeless situation until the mystery surrounded the Pit begins to unfold. More is transpiring in the Pit than just revenge for the supposed deaths no one can prove. Someone is altering the lava to hurt the Salamanders, the spell for sleep is lingering longer, and the Firewyrms are being hunted and killed.

Lark's sole purpose is to free Ash from the dungeons before he is scheduled for execution, but she's quickly enveloped in a fight for survival that will push her further and harder than she's ever been pushed. Mother Goddess will call on her yet again, but not without a price.

One of my favorite characters who made small appearances in Breakwater is Peta. She's a familiar with bad luck attached to her name. She plays so prominently in this series that she is now truly one of my favorites. From housecat to snow leopard, she not only changes forms but finds a change in heart towards the Terralings she's so inclined to despise. She and Larkspur are so well-matched, and watching their relationship evolve was truly wonderful.

If you've read Recurve and Breakwater, you absolutely can't put off reading Firestorm!

ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

Where to start...we pick up right where Breakwater ended and the action is not far behind. We start to see another side of Lark's father and after wanting to punch him in the face in earlier books, I'm starting to feel a bit sorry for him.

Lark and Ash find themselves in the Fire elementals domain once again to answer for the deaths of the Ender's they got into it with during Recurve in an effort to save their family. Right away they are taken to the fire queen and things go down hill from there.

Ash makes the ultimate sacrifice for Lark but Lark being Lark isn't having any of that. She has just three days to clear their names and convince the queen to let Ash go but she's met with resistance at every turn. Their goddess is not help as she assures Lark she's put into this position for a reason. One of her creatures are being wrongfully harmed and she wants Lark to stop it.

I was also glad to see our favorite familiar Peta back as the reluctant charge to Lark.

Firestorm is action packed from beginning to end and I was hooked from the first sentence until 4.5 hours later I reached THE END. The next book is sure to be as outstanding as the rest. There were moments of laughter and others of anger over the injustice that Lark must face in this test of strength and will.

I was glad to see the relationship that was starting to grow between Lark and Bella continue to blossom. We are thrown a curveball but I'll let you find that one out yourself although I must say I wasn't shocked when the culprit was revealed. I had a suspect of who it could have been and I was thrilled to find out I was right, although I'm not sure how Lark hadn't figured it out until afterwards.

With gems like this Ms. Mayer continues to be a pre order, can't wait to get my hands on author for me. Bravo and I can't wait to get my hands on the next one.

Larkspur and Ash have been accused of murder by the Pit, the fire elemental homeland. While Ash is willing to be executed and take all the blame, Lark just isn't willing to let that happen. She has three days to prove their innocence, but elementals and others are trying to kill her before she gets the chance.

A new book, a new change of scenery. This time we're going to the fire elemental home, and there are even more danger than before. Especially themselves.

See, basically this book is about their past actions catching up with them. Sure, they acted based on an emergency in Recurve. Sure, they didn't actually do what they're claiming they did. Sure, the Queen is yet another crazy person who somehow is allowed to reign over an entire people. Yet it doesn't excuse the fact they both absolutely just didn't think through their actions. They never do. It keeps getting them into trouble.

Lark is actually a lot different in Firestorm than she was in Recurve. In book one, she was kind of meek. She was beaten down by years of abuse, but she was growing into a strong character bit by bit. Now, in book three, we have a fully formed badass on our hands. Who thinks she can do no wrong and is always right and because she is right she has the right to do whatever the hell she wants. To be honest, Larkspur is kinda bitchy.

We also have a new character! Well, not new, she was introduced in the last book. Yet Peta, the bad luck cat, is here to stay. She is going to be Larkspur's familiar, and it is amazing that it took until book three to get this character who is going to be so integral to the plot of the series. Peta has had a really, really rough go at being a familiar. She is beaten down by all that life has had to offer her, just like Lark did at the start of the series. Yet this bad luck cat's luck is about to change, because she has found her forever home.

There is a lot new added to this book on the fly, though. Lark is displaying a lot of powers she really shouldn't have (according to Peta). She is basically able to do whatever she sets her mind to. There is also a new enemy that shows up. The enemy is the mysterious Blackwing, and he is another spirit walker just like Lark. In other, not so new news, the Mother Goddess is still a fickle bitch and I hate her.

The romance is kind of falling apart on me. In Recurve and Breakwater, it was a bit wishy washy, could be, could not be. In Firestorm it is real clear that something is there. It can't get much more clear than the guy literally trying to sacrifice himself to save the girl, afterall. Which is stupid, but that is neither here nor there. Then there is the fact that this has turned into a love triangle. Why has it done that? Why would you do that to me Mayer?

I feel like I'm repeating myself, but really nothing is as it seems. Everything changes at the drop of a hat. Every time something changes, it feels like it is on a whim. There really doesn't seem to be any reason why anything changes the way it does. I'm just along for the journey, not the adventure apparently.

Fast paced, edge of your seat reading.

What I liked: Firestorm picks up right where Breakwater left off, thank goodness. Ms Mayer puts her heroines and their cohorts into some pretty tense and action packed situations. There is barely time for a breath before you're wondering what's coming next.

I was pleasantly surprised to see a character from Breakwater make a starring role in Firestorm. It added greatly to the story and Lark's character. After reading Ms Mayer's Rylee Adamson series, I'm ready for almost anything to happen in her books. She doesn't disappoint in action or plot. I sincerely enjoy that I don't see what's coming next. I am wondering though...the first book, Recurve dealt with Earth magic, Breakwater as you can guess dealt with water magic and Firestorm with fire magic. What in the world does Ms Mayer have in store for the air magic I feel coming up or is she just going to change everything up??

As I said, Firestorm is action packed and there is suspense as Lark tries to find a way to save Ash's life without consequences to her and the characters around her. There are traitors to deal with and mysteries to solve but Lark is more than able to hold her own. Even though Firestorm had an ending, there are still a group of questions looming for her and the good and bad guys around her.

I also enjoyed the development of Lark's character. She is very slowly learning who she can trust. And there is a major development in the use of her magic. Don't miss it!

What I didn't like: I'm still having a hard time with Lark's relationship with her father. One minute I think I understand what's going on and then the next I'm totally confused but maybe that's what the author intends. You can't get comfortable with a character so the tension drags on; and not in a bad way.

If you like action packed urban fantasy and puzzles needing solved, you're going to love Firestorm.

Highly Recommend but as usual with a series, please read the first two books before trying this one!!!!

Rylee Adamson was a fantastic series and so I was hoping this would be good too. Larkspur is a great character that you are behind 100%. It is an intriguing, suspenseful, and mysterious thriller filled with tension. The story includes alliances, threats, betrayal, riddles, and plots, all infused with a touch of humour to keep the pages turning. Shannon weaves a tangled web that leaves you in need of more.

Uh oh

This was both a great read and incredibly frustrating. Whilst our Heroine is sort of growing up and working things out, she seems to miss or dimiss the obvious with alarming regularity and the people around here are mostly idiots. Still, it's a fun read. Very exciting. She's definitely going to into trouble in the next book though. Again.

FIRESTORM is packed full of action, danger and intrigue. Larkspur is such a strong, female character that you just can't help but love. She has had to endure so much pain and heartache in her short life, but she always manages to stay true to herself and loyal to her friends and allies. I love reading each new story and watching as Larkspur makes new friends everywhere she goes. Peta is at the top of the list of my favorites. I want a snarky, snow leopard/kitty cat familiar to call my own!

Firestorm picks up where story ended with book 2. Lark and Ash are taken into custody and are returned to the pit to face judgement for the killings of the fire elements in their previous journey to the pit. We get to have a more in depth introduction to Peta, who is now Larks familiar. I love getting to know her more, and was laughing along at her spitfire personality. I was pleasantly surprised by the twists and turns throughout the book, and there were moments I was cringing and others I was in tears for the suffering our heroine had to endure. As usual, the events were very vast paced, and action packed and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time!

There is a dueling love interest in this book, as Larks childhood best friend Cactus and Ash both hold a special place in Larks heart. I cannot wait to see where this goes!As with all of Shannon Mayer's books I cannot wait for the next installment, Windburn to see what happens next! This series is easily one of my absolute favorites.

* This book was provided free of charge from the author in exchange for an honest review. This however does not affect the rating for the book. (Rating: ✮✮✮½) This series is a quick, fun read. I like that each book, so far, has focused attention on a different type of Elemental. But, I really don't want there to be going forward; I'm not a fan of those.

Lookin' forward to checking out Peta, Mayer's newsletter free short, about the "bad luck cat" whose luck seems to be turning around and the recently released fourth installment, Windburn.

This series always reads quick and easy, and as always, enjoyable. This time, Larkspur is facing death with her almost love interest, Ash, in the Pit. Lark is finally given a familiar, who is nicknamed "Bad luck cat," but of course, Peta is anything but. Peta is witty and has already saved Lark's neck multiple times. An old 'flame' (punny!) comes into the picture so maybe we'll have a love triangle in future books with Ash and Cactus and Lark....and the book is, of course, set up for the next installment of searching for her missing father. So the series shall continue on.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Firestorm picks up right where Breakwater ends. Ash and Lark are being taken into the pit to answer for events that happened in Recurve. Lark, being Lark, has to find a way to say everyone. She can't leave someone to be hurt. She does whatever she can to help, no matter the costs to her. We see more of Peta. That cat is awesome. Firestorm does not end on a cliffhanger. I cannot wait to read more.

Not quite as good as the previous book in the series, but not bad. I'll still read the next book.

I felt like some of the climaxes and dramatic moments were rushed and glossed over a bit. The wishy-washy emotions and relationships also kinda got confusing and irritating. Who does she like now? Who likes her now? Who doesn't? Eh, who knows.... And some parts I wish were given more details like the firewyrms and the fight scenes. But overall I enjoyed it.

Firestorm is book 3 of The Elemental Series, and it was just as fast-paced and intense as Breakwater and Recurve. In Breakwater, we found Lark starting to get a little bit better of a grip on her abilities, and we also meet Peta who is a key character and ally in Firestorm. Everything in Firestone is a result of a domino effect from both the first two books.
Firestorm was an absolute whirlwind and each chapter had so much going on, it was hard to stop at the end of each chapter. Shannon Mayer wrote this one so well, that at the end of each chapter was a cliffhanger that just about forced you to read the next one, and the next, and so on. I literally had to force myself to stop reading and put my Kindle on the charger because I knew otherwise I'd get no sleep at night!

Continuing from everything Lark and Ash went through in Breakwater, we see their journey continue in the most unexpected way while they are in the Pit. We get a better perspective on Queen Fiametta and her place in this game of power between the Elementals, we learn more about Peta and her place in Lark's life, and we see Lark's trust get tested. Tested by herself and her emotions, as well as the people in her life and her relationship with the Mother Goddess.

"Trust is a strange thing, so tied to fear."

If you've finished Breakwater (which you should have before you are even reading any reviews for Firestorm), you know how Lark draws her power out. In Firestorm, Lark faces a war between her sense of fear and her sense of . One allows her to bring her powers out, while the other blocks it. And there is a lot of fear in this chapter of Lark's journey that makes her purpose in the Pit that much more difficult. While Lark, Ash, and Peta's mission in the Pit ends on a somewhat satisfactory note, there is still a lot of trouble at hand back in the Rim and the entire elemental world as a result of what happened here.

On a positive note, we see Lark's romantic relationship with blossom even more, as well as with a third-party that slows it down. I don't know about the rest of you, but I am absolutely team L+A.

In Shannon Mayer style, Firestorm ends on another cliffhanger that has the reader scrambling to get to Windburn to see what happens next!

This is my favorite so far. It has action and mystery and intrigue. I genuinely enjoy that she is a badass female protagonist that really doesn't rely on much other than herself. The plot of Firestorm is solid on its own but ties very nicely into the overall series. I still only give it three stars though. Here's why: Ash's devotion to her. There has not been enough relationship development between them for Ash to be willing to sacrifice his life for hers. They should not love each other yet. There just hasn't been enough anything, dialog, adventure, strife, you name it, for them to really have that deep of a connection. It bothered me in Breakwater too but I let it go hoping there would be more to come with them since Breakwater was dominated with her and Bella. Instalove is really just one of my pet peeves. BUT! Her trying to rescue him and her confusion with her feelings feels pretty natural. So I suppose its just his stance that bothers me.
Another reason: A LOVE TRIANGLE?? REALLY?? If you can't develop one romantic relationship why try for two? And this one was just like instant. It basically went "oh you know what? I'm in love with him too" WHAT!? *pulls hair out*
The interesting bit is the social and political relationships are built really well (i.e Bella, Peta, Fia, Maggie..) whether positive or not, you actually understand why they are such. I appreciate that she don't need no man to save her but if you're going to have romance you need to have a friendship for it to stand on. I want to love Ash, really I do, but I don't understand why she does as they barely even talk.

The tale of Lark is powerful yet deadly, and this installment is no exception. Almost as soon as the book begins, Lark’s life hangs in the balance and remains that way until the very end. We finally get to see Mayer’s fictional land of the Salamanders (or fire elementals), and it’s what you would expect, and even more. In true Mayer fashion, her affections for Ash remain yet nothing comes easy to them, and much to the reader’s disappointment, they spend most of the book apart.

Not surprisingly, nothing is as it seems which makes you really think about the plot instead of just plodding on. She gets you to question things as Lark does, and ponder what actions she should take, or even what could be lurking around the next corner. Once you get the hang of Mayer’s writing style, this doesn’t come as a surprise, but this book just wasn’t as good as the other two in the series. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but despite the intrigue of what could be perceived as the most mysterious elemental family, it just didn’t capture me the way the others had and should continue to do. It’s quite apparent that everything happens for a reason, and Lark is meant to forge on in this journey of hers, and even by now, the readers only have glimpses of the big picture of what will end up happening in the end. By the end of this book, I can clearly see how this will tie into the Rylee series, and happy to see that Peta finally makes her appearance. Though my misgivings, I still want to know how Lark’s story finally concludes so I’ll keep working my way through the series.

4.5 stars. I am loving this series! A fresh new take on a fantasy world that is quite enjoyable. It's always fun to find a new take on fantasy, and this one is quite the page turner. There have been a couple sex scenes so far in the series, from what I remember, but they are very tastefully done (not overly detailed), short, and easily skipped over for those that might prefer doing so. There have been a few times where I skipped a sentence or two where I just didn't want all the gory details of a fight scene, but even with that I am still thoroughly enjoying this series and would highly recommend it.
It's not often I can read a series straight through without taking a break, but so far with this series that's what I've done. I'm taking a break now to read another series that she has written that intertwines into this series, and then I plan to continue the series.

Firestorm takes Larkspur into the searing depths of the Pit, where the stakes are higher and the challenges deadlier than ever. Faced with a trial of intrigue and manipulation rather than sheer power, Lark must navigate a world of lava, betrayal, and danger to prove both her and Ash’s innocence.

Shannon Mayer masterfully crafts a tense and vividly detailed setting where every moment feels like a battle for survival. The writing in this book is so much better. I felt more immersed into the world and it made me care more about the characters. Even though the writing has improved, the plot was a bit boring for my taste. Trying to find clues to save Ash and yet there's no progress after all that time. It isn't until the very end when things get interesting. There are so many mysteries surrounding Fiametta and yet Lark was no closer to finding them out ever since she started. It isn't until the end when the truth came out which I dislike. All the work Lark put to discovering her secrets, it was all for nothing. I know it was all to build everything up, but at least some of the effort should've been meaningful in some way. I hope that the next book has the same amount of care as this book, but with a less boring plot.
