I'm a bit stuck here, I read romance almost exclusively and the previous book 'To Buy a Wife' while not just romance was enough to satisfy me and so I moved straight onto this one and I found it a difficult read at times. After just six months of marriage the honeymoon period is over and for the last two weeks the Elders have laid siege to their farm, Hudson and Lake have battled hard but it's only a matter of time, so many have been killed and Lake knows they won't stop until they get her. With Lake gone Hudson wakes up with no memories of her or their life together all he sees is the destruction their relationship caused and so he gets on with his life the best he can putting the wife he can't remember behind him. As the weeks pass Lake realises she's on her own, no rescue is coming and assumes Hudson must be dead or thinking he's better off without her. Apart they both suffer but will fate or chance bring them together again? This is a compulsive read and different for me I was hooked and couldn't read fast enough and I want more, I want to know what happens next but I've read the blurb for the next and third book in this series 'Dark Future' and I'm not sure I'm going to get what I want.
To Keep A Wife is the second book in the Dark Future series. It can be read as a standalone as it doesn’t have a cliffhanger and should be read after To Buy A Wife as it continues where that story left off. To Buy A Wife left off, Lake was taken and Hudson was injured and left with Vonn. When he woke up, he couldn’t remember much. Vonn told him what had happen but that did’t help. Lake was taken to Syon’s home to make the microbiotic and keep him supplied. When she first arrived she stalled as long as she could but it could only last so long. She had faith that Hudson would come for her. But as time passed and her pregnant belly grew she struggled with what was taking him so long and began to loose faith of him surviving. Will she find a way to survive? Is Hudson going to rescue her?
I loved book 2 in this series even better than the 1st one. This book ties up some loose ends and really makes this story great. I need to read book 3 to see if this story of Hudson and Lake has a happy ending.
I didn't realise this was a series until I started reading - although it can be read as a stand-alone novel. I found myself drawn into the story and read it in a few hours.
There is the opportunity for the series to grow further because of how it ended but the reader has the decision if they wish to leave it how it is or read the next book in the series. Personally, I am on the fence.
This book is set in the future where Elders rule the earth and the portal to the Dark Planet. There is two wars: one against the aliens and another; the Rebellion against the Elders who control everything: from taking children from there home and making them fight. Taking daughters and branding them as wives.
The first chapter introduces Lake, Hudson and Vonn who are fighting against the Elders in particular an enemy named Syon. The elder want Lake because of her ability to make microbiotics to control immortality. Hudson is Lake's husband and Vonn her 9 year old brother. Lake makes the decision to go with the soliders to save Hudson and Vonn lives. Hudson declares he will find and save her before hiding with Vonn.
Lake goes willingly and the Syon believes her family is dead. He takes her to his home and burns his name onto her body to name her his wife. Syon is evil to the core. When he realises Lake is pregnant he allows her to keep the child despite his anger it is a boy. He believes in a prophecy that a female child will cease the war. However, little does he know the young boy has a path to play in this prophecy.
Hudson is saved by Vonn. They are both helped by a gypsy family who use their healing powers to heal Hudson but the memory of the past year are gone. He lives his new life angered by a woman whose name is tattooed over his heart, and seeing the devastation of his home. Despite the young boy always telling him he belongs to this woman, he does not remember and does not want too. Vonn has hope though and stays with Hudson in the belief that one day he will go save his sister and together they will be a family again.
Travelling to a market two years later, Lake comes face-to-face with the man she once loved and trusted. Angered that he survived and did not come to save her, she tells the guard to take her back to Syon's home.
The moment Hudson sees Lake the memories come bursting back into the darkest parts of his mind. He is determined to save her even if he does feel betrayed that she has married another man. Believing in what they once had, Hudson takes the leap to go and save her and learning in the moment, he also has a child.
I am writing this review more for myself, so when I take the chance and read the next book in this series, I will remember!

Lake has gotten the life she never dared dreamed of—a safe haven, and the love of a good man, her husband, Hudson Land. But Lake’s hard-won happiness doesn’t last long when powerful Elders lay siege on Black Creek Manor in retaliation for her past defiance. As Lake watches everything she loves go up in flames, she sacrifices herself to keep her family alive, never imagining it’s not her life that is endanger, but the heart and soul of who she is.
Hudson wakes from a head wound to find his whole world is reduced to ashes. With no memory of why he’s sacrificed everything for a woman whose name is tattooed on his chest, Hudson is determined to make his heart match the emptiness of his mind, wiping out everything except the hatred for those who are to blame—the Elders and the wife he sought to protect.
As evil and fear spread across a war-torn land, can Hudson and Lake forgive each other’s betrayals and grab at their one chance at saving not only their lives… but their love as well?
Will you find that missing piece? Lake is still waiting for Hudson to come get her but she has given up as it has been so long. She just moves through life and she remembers his love and that gets her through. Hudson never knew that he had a wife but his memories are back and he is angry as he took Lake in and she caused so many deaths. He is coming for her and he will make her pay. But when they see each other again it is like time stands still, they are part of each other but will they be able to escape from this planet? Lake knows that she needs to stay or else Hudson and her new family will be killed but he won't allow her to go again. He will stand with her no matter what. What a beautiful story fell in love with Lake & Hudson.
This was an interesting sci-fi book. Lake is taken by Elders and waits for Hudson to come get her. Hudson has a head injury and doesn't remember anything for a long time except for what Vonn, Lake's younger brother, tells him. It takes a couple of years and a lot has happened to Lake and Hudson before Hudson sees Lake again. These two realize what a connection they have and they fight for each other. Lake is very strong to get through everything that happens to her while being apart from Hudson for over two years.
I enjoyed the second book of the series. It had a lot of action and was full of surprises. I wonder what "Dark Future" will hold. Great characters and worth the short read. I did wish it were longer. Warning: bloody and abusive in many ways.
Unfortunately not as good as book one. Too many threads are left hanging, mountains created and flattened in a page (why the buildup if so easily solved?) and Lake and Hudson don't have much interaction in this story, their off doing their own thing.
Glad I had this to read straight after To Buy a Wife! This book was full of the feels & had me close to tears a few times. A great conclusion to Lake & Hudson's story.
