This volume feels kinda like filler to me, mainly because I didn't like Don Kanonji at first. Still, Kon's existence is comedic gold, and Uryu seems like he's going to be a totally badass character! Can't wait for more.
Instead of reading a 3-1 I decided to read vol 4 solo. It still didnt work for me. We spend much of the time dealing with a reality tv show host and a hollow without much larger story arc. It wasnt grabbing me or getting me addicted. It just was losing my attention in some areas. Still had some very enjoyable fight scenes.
"They [children] see me stand up to evil spirits, and... they know what the courage is. Do you understand, boy? With them watching, I can't run away from the enemy." [Don Kanonji]
First of all, I have to say that I finished reading this volume three or four days ago, just didn't have time to write a proper review until now. Second of all, I NEEDED A GOOD LAUGH AFTER THE EVENTS OF THE PREVIOUS VOLUME AND THIS ONE DELIVERED. We started Vol 4 with Kon's funny little adventure where he decided to find "a person who will hold him gently" and "a place where he truly belongs" after both Ichigo and Rukia tried to "beat him up clean" (Rukia brought a toilet brush from the SCHOOL for this occasion 🤭). As a plushie, he can survive basically everything, so Orihime's and Tatsuki's 'base-soccer' game was nothing for him (he got send to the sky like Team Rocket 😂)
P.S. I have to admit that even if I don't like Orihime as a character, she looked really cool in her baseball outfit ;) P.P.S. I had no idea that Chad is crazy about cute things! How adorable! ☺️
I like the fact that in the end of his little adventure Kon realized that despite all his issues with Ichigo (Rukia can be mean to him all she wants, Ichigo can't 😂), his home is in the Kurosaki house.
After the events with Kon, we got an introduction to the "Ghost Bust" tv show and, of course, to the character of Don Kanonji, The Charismatic Spirit Medium of the New Century. He travels through the world to find places where he can hunt bad spirits and this time, he traveled to the Karakura Town. His goal is to succeed fighting a spirit who's hiding in a hospital. Ichigo, Rukia, Chad and everyone else gather together to watch the show live. A fun event changes into a dangerous one when the spirit becomes a Hollow.
"B... Boy... What's the meaning of this...?" "Didn't I tell you? That's not a monster. It's a Hollow. Normal spirits have a chain attached to their chests. When a hole opens in their torn chest... the spirit is a monster that's lost it's mind. It becomes a Hollow." "No... All this time... I only thought that if I open the hole and cut the chain, it would send them to heaven... No way... So, then... What have I been doing up till now...?"
If I have to be honest, I do not have any strong feelings to Don Kanonji's character. To me, he's similar to Kon. Both are annoying most of the time, but in the end, they show that their hearts are in the right place. Don Kanonji made mistakes when it comes to all the spirits he fought, but he did it, because he didn't know any better. He gets in the way and needs to be on the spotlight no matter what, but not because he needs it for himself - he does it, because he knew that the children were watching him and learning to be brave. Anyone can be a hero like Don Kanonji - that was a lesson he tried to teach his young viewers. I also have to say that I really like his dynamic with Ichigo. It was funny most of the time (I'm incredibly grateful for it), but there was also touching moments where the reader could see how they made an impression on one another and learned from each other.
And also this:
Don Kanonji: "UOOOOOOO" Ichigo: "DAAAAAAAA" Hollow: "GOGYAAAA"
It was only one image, but I laughed like a madman 😂
"But... you came. Why?" "Yeah, it's because Yuzu and dad are huge fans of the show." "Your little sister and father?" "Yeah." "And you came? Even though you despise it?" "Eh? They'd look pretty pitiful if just the two of them came." "You're so kind." "Why's that? It's normal." "Yeah, you're right... It's normal."
Scenes like this shows why I love Ichigo Kurosaki so much. He's a guy who hates fortune telling (and also feng shui, physics and things like that), so, of course, he also hates the "Ghost Bust" show. Anyone else would stay at home and do anything else than going to the hospital and watching a guy fighting air, but not Ichigo. His bond with his family is so admirable. He's incredibly thoughtful of the others - always thinks about his family (and friends) first, and only later on about himself. I can dislike Orihime as a character all I want, but I can't blame her for having a crush on Ichigo (since I have one as well). He's a guy every girl should dream about.
"Wha... What the hell are you!?" "Ishida Uryuu. A Quincy. I hate the Shinigami."
We finally got the introduction of Ishida in this volume! Yay!
P.S. I LOVE all Ichigo's comments during this volume. I already said that the guy is hilarious, but I have to say it again: the guy is HILARIOUS 😂
P.P.S. Dear Tite Kubo, thank you so very much for the Superman-like image of Ichigo that you put in this volume. It's glorious!
Story Line: 5 stars out of 5. (I'm going to try to keep this short as possible. I have been going into a lot of detail when writing reviews for this manga. I think I'm going to keep them short and sweet from now on. I will say how I feel about each character in the character section.)
You meet two new characters in this volume of the manga. Ichigo ends up going to a taping of a television show because his family is a big fan of it. He is very protective of his family. He sees all his friends at the recording. They are surprised he is there. He wasn't excited about the show at all. Don Kanonji is a medium who is trying to send a demi-hollow to the soul society. Instead Don Kanonji turns him into a hollow. Ichigo now transforms into a soul reaper. Together they end up fighting the hollow. At the end of this one Don Kanonji wants to make Ichigo his disciple. Ichigo really doesn't want to have anything to do with that. At the very end of this volume you also get to meet Uryu Ishida. He tells Ichigo that he hates soul reapers.
I really did enjoy this volume. I find Don Kanonji to be a comedy relief character. You really need that after a heavy volume. Volume 3 was a really sad one. I was happy that this one came right now. Reading the first few volumes really makes me want to rewatch season 1. This seriously will always be one of my favorite shows ever. It has action, comedy, and more.
Characters: 5 stars out of 5. I love Ichigo. He will always be my favorite character. I love watching him develop as I read more and more of the manga. Rukia is still just alright. She probably won't grow on me too much. She didn't really in the show either. I found Don Kanoji to be a fun character. I love his personality! I also love Uryu Ishida though you don't get to know much about him. The only thing you learn is that he hates soul reapers and that he is a quincy.
The one good thing about not visiting a series in so long is that you forget about certain characters.
Take, for example, Don Kanonji. I completely forgot he existed, and I was much happier for it. I just did not care for his role in the story, so understandably I was not exactly having a good time with this volume.
That said, I do appreciate the reminders about demi-Hollows and how they become a complete Hollow.
This manga is so gooooood!!! So apparently Quincy hate Ichigo for some reason and I hate him cause you think you cool but you not Quincy. If he hate Ichigo that much then back off. ITS GOOD SHOULD READ IT AND IM RECOMMEND FOR YALL TO READ IT.
The main story arc in this volume looks into a TV reality host who can apparently see ghosts. Grounded in humour, the story mostly looks into the truth behind this host and if there's any link to Soul Reapers.
While somewhat fun, it's the ending, with the arrival of our favourite Quincy, that things really get more interesting!
Kon is having problems with how he is being treated by Rukia and Ichigo so he decided to run away from home but a defective soul in a stuffed lion has problems in this town so he will have to learn to adapt or have to return to the callous duo. :)
Don Kanonji is a famous spiritualist with a TV show that has 1 out of 4 people in Japan watching so it is no surprise people around Ichigo love the show but being able to see and interact with ghost already he is not impressed by the hype. So when the spiritualist is coming to town Ichigo could not be less thrilled even if his father and Yuzu are super happy. However even being able to see spirits the man has a lot to learn about spirits and even more about humbleness. Be sure to read to see how Ichigo and Don work together to fix a mistake. :)
Finally Ichigo and Rukia meet Uryū Ishida after what they think might be a malufunction device telling htem hollows have appeared but did not exist before they got there. Uryū however is not a normal human and is able to summon a spitir bow taking out a hollow in the distance and declaring his dislike for Soul Reapers. Here begins the start of a rivalry that will shape how the series ends so be sure to read this volume. :)
My favorite part is probably when Don Kanonji makes Ichigo his number one disciple and the reaction Ichigo gives us when he says it. :)
I liked how this was a more comedic entry after the previous heavier instalment, and I liked how we are introduced to a comedic character that also has surprising depth and an interesting little character arc in this volume. I liked seeing all the different side characters converge and witness spirits and seeing how some of them were able to perceive the spirit world. There’s a particular character I love to keep an eye on in these earlier entries to see if there are hints towards their future reveal, and so far everything fits and there are small bits of foreshadowing that will add up and pay off far down the line of this series. I loved the cliffhanger introduction of another major character and I think that this is the official mark of the story beginning to move towards major arcs, which feels surprisingly fast but nicely paced for a manga series. This was a fun read, but felt more like a transition piece rather than a singular story.
Not my favorite volume. It's sort of filler, with the gang going out to see Don Kanoji's tv show in the flesh (a special at Karakura), but what they end up witnessing is more terrible than they expected. But it's also a moment when everyone we've met is in the same place and we can see where they all stand. The volume says this is the turning point so I'm curious to see what that means exactly. Then we're "introduced" to a character I'm not a huge fan of initially (aka. guy on the cover).
Ichigo encounters a paranormal reality star which takes up most of the chapters in this volume. I didn't care very much for these chapters but I'm sure this will be a lead in to more interesting plot. Plus this volume ends on a total cliff hanger! AHHH!
Remember when I said that these take me longer to read, that is no longer the case. This was so action packed and the new character that was introduced is boss. #bleachtrash forever
Bleach, Vol. 4 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (26–34) of the on-going manga series.
The Kurosaki family and some of Ichigo Kurosaki's friends watch a live filming of a television program about spirit medium Don Kanonji, who unknowingly turns a spirit into a Hollow during the show. Ichigo is forced to clean up the mess, cheering-up the shocked Kanonji. In the following days, Ichigo and Rukia Kuchiki find that many Hollows they have detected have been slain. They soon learn the cause if Uryū Ishida, a classmate of Ichigo's who happens to be one of the remaining Quincies, humans who use spiritual power to destroy hollows. Uryū declares himself an enemy of all Soul Reapers and challenges Ichigo to a competition of hunting Hollows.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. Uryū Ishida is introduced to be an interesting antagonist to Ichigo Kurosaki and the Soul Reapers – it would be interesting to see how this rivalry would evolve throughout the series.
All in all, Bleach, Vol. 4 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.
The book was amazing I give it 8/10 the book completing volume 3. In the beginning, it was showing some of kon funny moments. And they switch the mood from action to slice of life manga. they were talking about a famous show in japan that the actor fighting souls so the actor going to come to their city and Ichigo family wants to go to the show so he had to go and that was boring for me. when he gets there he and rokia they heard loud screaming and they found out he was a hollow that was the boring part of the story when they found the hollow Ichigo start to yell at the actor to run away. but the scurte catch him and we have a man come from nowhere and put his stick in Ichigo body and he makes him in soul reaper form and after that Ichigo kill the hollow and we found out that person was {kisuke} he is and a captain soul reaper and that not the only surprise. we had a character that comes in the end. read the volume and you going to know what I'm talking about.
This volume had me cracking up. Ichigo and his friends are such a funny group.
In this volume we find out about demi Hollows, or jibaku, spirits with regrets tied either to a person or place, and who are on their way to turning into Hollows.
We also come across the mysterious Quincy, who can defeat Hollows and for some reason hates Soul Reapers.
2.5-3☆ this was not a particularly fun or great volume in any way, except the very last chapter which introduces this new character on the cover. Of course, I'm going to keep reading, I've already watched the anime and know all of this is going to happen, but this volume was quite disappointing!
This was a fun volume with a boisterous new character introduced! The comedy elements are really landing for me and the fights with Hollows continue to be super fun. I’m very excited to get introduced to the actual Soul Society
