Sequel to Evolution
Book Two

Evolution made music history when one bandmate turned vampire and another joined the vampire hate movement Preservation Group. Gene is trying to cling to the music as his relationship with Kerstrande begins to spiral into the darkness of hidden demons. Jaded by his years as a vampire flunkie, Kerstrande uses his newly won power over New York City to destroy his enemies and protect Gene. But a demon called a Fallen begins to take control of KC, slowly devouring his soul and through him the entire city. Battling against the evil that wants to destroy him, Kerstrande fights to hold onto Gene’s brightness.

A power unlike any other grows within Gene and shines like a beacon to the demons surrounding him. Realizing that only he can save his lover, Gene is willing to do anything to shake the darkness loose. Even if it means reshaping the future, the band, and his own existence.

4.5 Stars ~ I honestly wasn't sure if I was ready to read the second installment in the 'Evolution' series. The first book was very intense with a lot of darkness and bleakness. Yet I wanted to know what happened next. I wanted to see if Genesis (Gene) discovered anything more about himself and his purpose and I was hoping to get a better feel for Kerstrande.

I couldn't imagine being Gene. He sees ghosts, always has, and now he's a phoenix, and it happened before he turned eighteen. His best friend, Joel, was turned into a vampire at the end of the last installment, and now he's in a mental institution being trained on how to be a good vampire. When Kerstrande kills Hane, the darkness, the shadow, the Fallen within him moves to Kerstrande. The shadow tries to kill Gene right off the bat but only ends up breaking him and Kerstrande up for a while.

Gene is constantly being killed and being reborn, but growing weaker each time. The King of Vampires shows up to force Gene to either contain Kerstrande's shadow or kill him. Kerstrande spends so much time battling the shadow back from allowing it to take him over completely that it was painful to watch. The incredible love Gene and Kerstrande share is the only thing, in my opinion, that keeps Gene from going totally insane.

'Evolution: Genesis' was a difficult read for me. There is so much going on and there were times I had trouble following, although that had more to do with the length of time I took between reading the first book and this sequel, and is totally my fault. The first book absolutely needs to be read before this one.

Even though this sequel is just as dark and bleak, for most of it, as the first book was, I still enjoyed this tremendously. The writing is phenomenal, the storyline is fascinating, the fact the author wrote from both Gene and Kerstrande's points of view was amazing, and the ending blew me away. Much like with 'Evolution', "like" is too simple a word for what I felt when I finished reading this book. It definitely made me feel many different emotions and I was thrilled at how the author tied up the loose ends and answered my questions. So, not “like”. Definitely “love”.

3.5 Mess With Your Head Stars!

I read the first book in this series and I found it interesting and heartfelt. I definitely recommend reading the first one, Evolution, or you will be lost.

I definitely have to give the author some props for creating a series that will keep you on your toes and your emotions stretched to the absolute maximum. Lissa Kasey takes you on an adventure that will leave you depleted and exasperated and joyous and completely pissed off at some parts!!! Isn't that the sign of an amazing author? The emotions they can invoke.

This story does not disappoint but it does disappoint at some parts. Contradictory eh? Well, that's how I felt reading it. Loved it and hated it, sometimes on the same page!!!

My favourite part, alternating POV's. I love LOVE being inside the head of men. Its gritty, and grungy, and raw. Captivating to read such powerful emotions.

If you dare, jump on the crazy train and hold on, its gonna be a bumpy, but not a boring ride! haha

A copy of this book was provided digitally to me by Net Galley

This book was a first for me in a lot of ways.

It was my first male on male, romance driven, vampire, phoenix book with the main character part of a band that was just starting to become famous. So much was pounded into this book from the beginning that it had to at least be exciting to read. Well, while it had a lot to work with, Evolution sadly didn't make use of its tools to the fullest extent. Did I mention there are a host of other demons out there too? Succubus included. Doesn't really matter though.

The reason this book was a first for me in so many different ways is because I was warned about all of these cliches early on in life. Avoid books with romance because of the oncoming love triangle. Look out for vampire books where it's nothing but angst and loneliness even though their lives are usually pretty awesome. If I were to sum up most vampires for you hailing from today's fiction who wouldn't choose to be one? And for God's sake, why is there always a clear-cut dominant one paired up with a too naive main character? The latter, Genesis, even has hair that changes color throughout the novel while I can't even picture the vampire with anything but a black coat draped over a black shirt with darker than night pants shielding boxers the color of the void itself.

So why did I give it two stars and not just put up a DNF for this review while I move on to books I know I'll like? Honestly, it's because Genesis tries, even when I think the book ultimately came up short in the end.

I came into this book without reading the previous entry, but even then I saw hints about the kind of person Genesis--the character--used to be and who he was becoming as the book went on. Unlike other characters who are more than likely to be passed around among lovers of questionable content, he has to fight in order to save who he cares about the most. This mostly came to a head in the second part of the novel in that he's not only the guy trying the hardest, but the only one trying to do anything at all. The rest don't care and when faced with a life not in their favor just give up. The main character didn't and that was sort of great to see. He basically saw problems and tried to solve them. He was an active antagonist for most of the book and I was happier for it.

This book could've easily been over three hundred pages. Genesis can't fill an entire book with nothing but the ability to endure. The music, interviews, world, demons and such could've been expanded upon greatly, but are only really talked about instead of shown. When they say they had an interview and an event took place because of it, we were told about it. I would've loved to read the reactions of some of these characters, filling out the story as a whole because of it.

The world itself is just like ours with some changes here and there. Supernatural creatures can get registered, vampires are known to be real and the world is almost a bit too normal for it. I almost forgot there was a stereotypical religious hate group in there. The fact that the main character is Buddhist is a welcome change and something I again think could've been greater with a little more thought put into it. Still, points for trying something different.

This last point might just be me, but the cover for the first book is way better than this one. The single feather of the former has ten times the detail of the phoenix on this one.

Not the best book, but okay if you want something fast and light. Look at the page count for this book! That's practically nothing.

Four and a half stars!
This is the perfect sequel to finish out the story. I loved this book and how we see Genesis work through the problems his friends were facing. I felt horrible because of the events when he was “hanging out” with Lee. You could tell they haunted him for a while
Kerstrande was so hard to watch in this story. He was suffering so much from the Fallen. I didn’t know if he was doing to make it or not through a good portion of the book. Poor Genesis though. He had to watch his boyfriend slowly seep away as he fought the demon. My favorite line in the book is “I think I broke my legs. Both my legs. Well that’s a feeling I have never experienced before.” I was cracking up there.
I was glad to see Rob got himself a little more under control in this book. But Damon Phillips shows up in this book and wow is he all kinds of whacked out! I kind of want to know more about him but he’s also a tiny bit of a bad guy. I loved Cris in this story and so want more for him. I want him to have his own story.
I was amazed to see Genesis’ transformation throughout the story. Not just in the paranormal sense, but him as a person. He really grew and got to understand himself and his feelings more in the story. He realized his purpose and really came into his own by the end of the book. I desperately want to see more Genesis and Kerstrande but their story ends with such a happy ending there aren’t any loose ends to tie up. Doesn’t make me want more any less.

So as much as I did like the first book in this series, sadly this one was just not for me...
With this book Genesis and Kerstrande start of having problems so they break up and get back together then later on in the book it happens again. Well I have to say I am not a fan of a lot of on and off in a relationship between the two MC's happening in a book so that got a little annoying.
Then there was the way Kerstrande treated Genesis by the way he talks to him, then letting him go off and get hurt by one of his associates. Yes he did have some good moments but all the bad things he did too Genesis overshadowed that for me so I was left thinking Genesis could do so much better.
I do understand Genesis's character more know and how much he does care for his family and friends. Also there was his loneliness which I think made me feel worse for him being in a relationship with Kerstrande because honestly to me he deserved so much better. So sadly after this reading this book I no longer feel like they fit together so well anymore.
I still loved the world this author built and were she was going with this story. There were just a few parts sadly in this book that unfortunately overshadowed the good for me.

So I am sad to say this book was just not for me...
I received this book free in exchange for an honest review from Inked Rainbow Reads.

It's a good book. Good series but it has got the whole mindfuck thing going on. Literally. And Genesis hopefully can finally be settled. He just couldn't catch a break. Damon I wanted to kill myself. You've got to read these.

I did not like this book from the start. I just could not read this, just could not get into it. I was lost and confused right from the start. So sorry no not even mentioning a story guideline But I also didn't read the first book.
