The beginning of the twentieth century was a critical period in Ottoman history, which saw the end of the Empire, defeat in World War I but also a colourful influx of victorious allied armies and White Russians fleeing the Revolution, contributing to the already cosmopolitan nature of the city. Eskenazi breathed the complex air of this budding new Turkey, with its ideals, contradictions and hopes. His extraordinary memoir―which begins in Constantinople and travels across Europe during and after World War II―tells the remarkable story of a family, poignantly capturing a moment in time which now exists only in memory.

Dönem ile ilgili bilgi edinmek için okuduğum bir kitaptı. Ancak içerik olarak bana hitap etmesine rağmen anlatımı çok yorucuydu. Bu yüzden uzun aralıklarla okuduğum bir kitap oldu. Kitabın bölümlendirilmemesi insanda okurken konudan konuya atlıyormuş hissi bırakabiliyor maalesef. Anlatılan anılarda sürekli bir yarım kalmışlık hissi var ve bu insana kitabı bir türlü tam olarak okuyamadığı hissine maruz bırakıyor. Aslında içerik olarak dönem hakkında bilgi sağlasa da anlatım tekniği ve bir kitabın akış şeklinin bir insanı nasıl o kitabı okumaktan alıkoyduğuna çok güzel bir örnek bu kitap. Bu yayınevinin anı türünde farklı eserlerini de almıştım ve henüz okumadım. Umarım aynı şekilde değildir. Konu olarak muhteşem seçimler yapılırken bu kadar basit hatalarla okuyucuyu soğutmak gibi bir hata yapmak enteresan.

in questo memoir, victor eskenazi racconta la sua vita- dall'infanzia in una cosmopolita e vivacissima costantinopoli, passando per vienna, milano, londra e la guerra nell'intelligence corps. soprattutto la prima parte è incantevole nel raccontare un mondo pieno di fascino che non esiste più- di una borghesia colta e capace di passare da un paese all'altro con grazia e sapendosi integrare senza però snaturarsi. molto interessante anche il racconto dell'addestramento e delle attività in tempo di guerra; libro assai interessante e, purtroppo, quasi introvabile.
