Wyatt Stryker #1

Caged Lightning

Rate this book
Like an arrow in the hand of a warrior, so are the sons of those who have been shaken. Hurl lightning bolts and scatter them. Shoot your arrows and rout them. King David, circa 1000 BC

When ex-Navy Seal, Wyatt Striker, returns from a trip to Mexico, where he had nearly taken a bullet to the head during a seemingly common break-in, he discovers his sister-in-law tied to a chair in the kitchen, his son gone, and a ransom note. His intuition and training lead the way as he tries to outsmart the captor, who, unknown to Wyatt, is a deadly assassin bent on luring him into a weak position.

In this fast-paced action adventure, Brent Russell weaves a tapestry of mystery, suspense, and good-old-fashioned fight scenes described in a uniquely thrilling voice."

Wyatt Striker returns from Mexico and an attempt on his life. He finds his son kidnapped. But this doctor and ex-Navy Seal are not just going to follow directions on a silly ransom note. Wyatt creates his own plan to hunt down and take out everyone that has messed with his family. He will use all of his skills as an ER doctor and SEAL training to find out where his son is, why Wyatt is being targeted, stopping a drug cartel, and saving a senator.

This story starts with and bang and doesn’t stop until the end. Wyatt is quick witted and had experience that helps him through this tangled maze. I love how his is willing to do whatever it takes to get to that next step. It’s not always pretty but it definitely has results. I really enjoyed how there is way more happening than you first see.

If you are looking for an action packed thriller/mystery make sure to pick up this book. You will not be disappointed. Now I just hope Brent Rock Russell is quick to write the second book in this series.

I received a free copy of this audio book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a good book. I felt like it was very much in the same thread as the Jack Reacher novels, only this novel tended to just give you the answer. It felt very much like I was being told a story rather than understanding and being able to make logical jumps on my own.

That being said, I do like the main character. He was characterized well, but I didn't care for many of the other characters.

Buckle in for the thriller of the summer

Caged Lightning starts off with a bang and doesn’t really let off. Russell put his foot on the gas and wouldn’t let off no matter how much you begged. The main character Wyatt Stryker was a really unique and fun character to follow through this interesting story. Stryker is part special ops trained good guy and part doctor so his point of view and interaction with things are different.

The story itself was really interesting to me because it was a combination of many different kinds of fiction into one. Mystery, Thriller, and Suspense all wrapped into one. It really leaves the reader confused as to what is going to happen next. Becuase in most single-genre stories they seem to follow the same story arc — with Caged Lightning, there is no one singular genre to stick to so the story is free to go where it wants.

I like the background of the author (he’s a doctor) sneaking into some of the story it lends a lot of realism and authenticity to the story and makes me enjoy it even more.

Caged Lightning is just like it sounds, a quick hitting multi-genre story that will leave you standing there wondering what just happened.

Overall, I really enjoyed both Russell’s writing and the character Stryker a lot. I’m curious to see if they will continue one way or another in other stories.

I received this book from Goodreads Giveaway in an exchange for an honest review. I normally do not read books of this genre but the synopsis caught my eye. This story grabs you from the first chapter and you have to keep turning to find out what happens next and who survives. The story sometimes seem very far-fetched but it definitely holds together well and might not seem that way to the soldiers that go through the extreme. Bloody, action-packed and heart-stopping, this is a fast read for those willing to take a journey in a ex-military doctor's shoes.

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I found the writing pretty good and found the plot excellent. So why did I find this book very average ? For one thing,I found it very strange that a small group of people could take down a whole drug cartel, as well as a few members of our own government and come out completely unharmed. I also did not feel the female characters were developed at all on a personality basis. A fairly good read , but not a real page turner.

This book is so detailed with the gruesome bits which probably comes from the authors ER work. I really liked this ghastly aspect of the book. Now this book is not about the ER, but it is packed full of high adrenaline incidents just like an ER. The characters are developed and interesting. The plot is action-packed and full of twists. The mystery will keep you reading until you get to the last word on the last page and leave your mind reeling. Honestly, I am happy this book is going to be a series because I am not sure how the story will go which is refreshing. This is a well-crafted thrilling, suspenseful, and fast-paced mystery book that all will enjoy.

The reading level was very low. I felt like I was being spoon-fed the story. Also a lot of the repetitiveness could have been edited out making the story tighter. There was little thrill about this thriller. Read my full review at Girl Who Reads

Very good read. Interesting character & plot development. Circumstances they encountered & the ways they dealt with them seemed plausible. This could really happen. Fast paced but thorough. An enjoyable denouement & I very much look forward to the next Wyatt Stryker novel.
