Vernetta Henderson #5

Lawful Deception

Rate this book
The beautiful Bliss Fenton won't be winning any awards for Mother of the Year. Truth is, motherhood isn't nearly as important to Bliss as the cottage industry she's created: extorting wealthy men for the hefty child support she can collect.

But Bliss' greed goes too far when she takes on Fletcher McClain. The handsome music industry mogul refuses to accept her conniving conduct lying down. He retains high-profile attorney Vernetta Henderson to sue Bliss for fraud.
Enter Bliss’ unscrupulous attorney, Girlie Cortez, who has a personal score to settle with Vernetta. As the two lawyers once again go head-to-head, their legal battle quickly escalates from merely contentious to downright deadly.

Wow.

I love this series. It's been a crazy ride with these five books and I'd gladly do it all over again. This one was so good and I'm glad to see Specials character development throughout all these books. I think what I love the most is the fact that not all the drama takes place in a court room, which can be dull in these types of books, but not with this series.

It's funny, fast paced, thrilling. Everything I would want to read.

Once I began this legal thriller, it kept me captive until the end. It was difficult to tell how this one was going to end due to the unexpected moments. I really thought this dude was the one for Special after she was over her apprehension. Storyline well written . Enjoyable read

Ten thousand dollars a month! That’s the amount of child support Bliss Fenton is receiving for her six-year old son. She’s also getting an exorbitant amount for her three-year-old son, and is working on getting more child support from Fletcher McClain for their three-month-old, Harmony. This is Bliss’s MO – sleep with extremely rich men. Have their baby and collect big sums of money. For Fletcher, the child support amount would be close to fifty grand PER MONTH! But Fletcher is denying that Harmony, is actually his. He hires Vernetta to defend him and sue Bliss for fraud. He claims he had broken up with Bliss eleven months before Harmony was born.

Bliss seeks her own attorney, Girlie Cortez. Girlie was more than happy to represent Bliss for two reasons. The money, of course. And, it felt like a sure chance to even the score against her nemesis, Vernetta Henderson.

This is number 5 in the Vernetta Henderson series. The characters are incredibly believable. This story, like the others in this series, is very engaging and pulls the reader in quickly. I enjoy Vernetta’s character and give the author kudos for the variety of situations from one book to the next. I also really enjoy the antics of her long-time and faithful friend, Special. We all need a friend like Special by our side. She provides the humor in otherwise bad situations. In this story, she is still working on getting her PI license. She tells a detective, “I’m not licensed yet. But, I’m a fully authorized investigator-in-training.” Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Lawful Deception by author Pamela Samuels Young reads like an article ripped directly from today’s headlines; the subject matter is a well-known topic. Main character Bliss Fenton is beautiful and she knows it; in fact, one might call her a gold digger on steroids. Bliss uses what she's got to get what she wants. She has made a very lucrative career of becoming pregnant by ridiculously wealthy men, and then suing them for exorbitant amounts of child support. Her calculating approach is mind blowing, and I found myself quickly wanting to shout at some of the male characters in the book, “Noooooo, don’t fall for it!” There were several times I wanted to fling the book across the room, but I don't mistreat my books like that. Instead, I gave the character several serious eye-rolls, followed by a resounding, "hmmph!"

The characters in the book are multi-dimensional, and the story is well written; although it flows easily, it is by no means predictable. Lawful Deception quickly pulls you in, and holds you hostage. I found myself so engaged in the book; I couldn’t put it down. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone who likes a book that stretches itself outside the box, one that draws you in, and when you’re done reading, you feel like you’ve been on the biggest roller coaster ride of your life.

Kudos to Pamela Samuels Young, you’ve pushed the envelope once again!

Well! Well! Well! Pamela Samuels Young has done it again. Lawful Deception is the biggest pot of hot mess that I've seen in a mighty long time and I absolutely loved it!!! Where do I begin? Ok, Bliss Fenton is scandalous, greedy yet smart. This chick figures out a way to get what she wants in abundance plus some.

The problem with greed is that it makes you cross lines that clearly shouldn't be approached. Hence the consequences. Enter Fletcher McClain, music Mogul and typical male. His affinity for the striking beauty Bliss lands him in a spot so tight that his attorney Vernetta Henderson almost had to grease him to try to get him out.

This book would so greatly be served as a movie because this cast of lead and supporting characters played their parts to perfection. Some things I guessed correctly and on other parts I was dead wrong. This is a very interesting and entertaining mystery. Very well done! FIVE STARS!!!!

Pamela Samuels young brings back Attorney Vernetta Henderson and her arch-rival, Girlie Cortez. This legal thriller has a host of characters that are conniving, deceitful, likable and down-to earth. You will find yourself relating to someone in this book. Bliss is a beautiful, gold-digging woman who is only looking out for herself and doesn’t care who she has to hurt on her journey to living a wealthy life. Although this is a Vernetta Henderson series, Pamela writes it as a “stand alone” book.

Gat Damn, y'all! My girl is back better than ever with this fifth installment in my favorite lawyer series, Vernetta Henderson. OMG, this book was absolutely smokin’ hot!!!! What shocked me is that I didn’t even know Pamela had written another story in the series, and I stumbled across that fact by total accident. Let me be the first to say, in case you haven’t detected it in my writing, I loved this book! Wowwwww!

Our girl, Vernetta, has matured a great deal since the last book. She’s learned what is more important, and money is not always at the top of the list. However, that doesn’t stop her grind and hustle. Fletcher McClain, the ex-boyfriend of Vernetta, shows up at her office, out of the blue, badly in need of legal help. This dude doesn’t just need legal help, he needs the brilliant mind of a cutthroat attorney who will get him what he wants. Fletcher is the CEO of Karma Entertainment, an industry music mogul. He’s respected by most of his peers and hated by his competition. The problem with Fletcher was he didn’t know how to “keep it in his pants” so to speak. You know. . .that other head most men think with! Unfortunately, for him, he dipped his member in a crazy psycho chick, and now she’s pregnant. Umm, Lord, how does that happen? All it takes is one time, Fletcher!

Against Vernetta’s better judgment, she decides to help her ex with his women woes. Why did I say “women?” Oh. . .did I fail to mention Fletcher has a fiancée too. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall when he tells his lady he’s got his crazy ex pregnant! Once Vernetta meets with Fletcher’s ex, she soon realizes why Fletcher is having so many issues with her. This woman has made a living out of having babies for child support payments. She didn’t have a 9 to 5 like most of us, her job was lying on her back and popping out babies for the highest Baller or Roller—take your pick. Hmmph, being a “real” mother was the last thing on Miss Thang’s mind! She hooks up with the rich and famous, entraps them, and then she sits pretty on her big pile of money until her next victim happens her way. Fletcher definitely fit the bill, along with the other two babies’ daddies she has. It became perfectly clear that Bliss Fenton was not going to be easy to tame. Most everyone hated Bliss and with good reason. She treated people horribly and didn’t give a damn. She was a user and abuser and all she cared about was the almighty dollar from the wealthy persuasion.

Well, someone got sick of Bliss’s money-grubbin’ little hands and decided to end it all for her. Oh yeah, Bliss finds herself dead. Umm, what is going to happen to her children? Bliss’s best friend in the whole wide world is Jessica. Who, better than Jessica, can see to Bliss’s motherless children. Besides, she’s wealthy too and is unable to have children, so this is the perfect situation for her to fall into. It also helped that through all of Bliss’s madness, she decided to name Jessica the legal guardian over her three kids.

Vernetta’s best friend, Special, who works at Verizon by day and is a wannabe Private Investigator at night, although, I shouldn’t say wannabe. Special definitely was named appropriately. She possesses a “special” gift for being nosey and finding out things that others cannot. She’s so close to getting her PI license, and I’m hopeful in Book Six, she will be able to run her own show, but for now, she’s doin’ the damn thing helping Vernetta out with her wealthy clients. As was the case with this Fletcher McClain situation. Vernetta hired her to do some snooping to dig up any dirt she could on Bliss Fenton due to the fact Bliss was suing Fletcher for child support to the tune of eighty-three thousand dollars a month. Good Gawd, can you believe that? What child on this earth needs that much money? Hmm? You add that up for the next eighteen years and we’re talking what, ten million or more? That is crazy as hell, and that’s exactly what Fletcher thought too, which is why he was seething that this nutty bitch even thought to ask for that much money from him. Problem was, a judge would grant it knowing how much money Fletcher makes a year. Over his dead body, he’d say. Well, as the reader presses on, you’ll soon discover, it’s not Fletcher’s dead body, but definitely the “crazy bitch” as he referred to her.

I must say, I was hoping and praying for Bliss Fenton to die. (I know that sounds bad, but you have to read this character to understand). I kept saying, “When is this bitch going to be offed?” Hell, I was as bad as Fletcher. She angered me to no end, so I felt her exes’ pain. She put a damn number on them, but as she was quick to point out, if they weren’t so eager to “get some” from her, then they wouldn’t be in the predicament they found themselves. Hmm, Bliss does have a point!

As the story unfolds, the reader will be taking a crash course on our wonderful legal system and all it has to offer. (Bullshit, that’s what!) Some of it will appear unfair, but that’s the way our law works (usually against those who are in the right – LOL).

Pamela Samuels Young is one of the best legal novelist I’ve ever read. Her characters are believable, fun and unforgettable. Every one of her stories should be a movie. Her chapters are short, sweet and directly to the point. They read like a soap opera with just enough information to keep you going and sitting on the edge of your seat waiting to find out what is going to happen next. Vernetta Henderson is a strong character, as well as all the characters Pamela has added to the series. I’m telling you if you love a great legal thriller with drama, humor, and spunk, you’ve GOT to read this book! It was simply amazing and I couldn’t get enough. I read it in two days, so that should tell you something.

This is what I’m talking about! I missed Pam so much, but she amply made up for it by giving her fans this one right here! Damn, I hated this book to end!

P.S. The nice thing about the Vernetta Henderson series is that all the books are standalones. Check out all of Pamela Samuels Young’s other books as well. I’ve read them all. She’s an amazing talent in the courtroom and out. She’s a real-life litigating attorney.

Wow, what an intriguing and enlightening trip into the legal system and the question of birth, parenthood, and responsibilities! The situation was, I hope, unlikely, but it brought forward a lot of questions: what is the responsibility of any male who ever had sex with a fertile female? What about sperm donors? What if said male has stated unequivocally that he is not interested in fathering a child with her, and has subsequently done his best to prevent such parenthood? And what if she pokes holes in his condom (not the situation in this book, but still a related scenario)?.
The biological mother in this book was generally disliked (and rightfully so), conniving, and selfish. She had three children – with three separate fathers – with the sole goal of getting large amounts of child support (and using it to greatly benefit her own life and circumstances) from them; they were all very wealthy man. She tricked all of them (with one possible exception) into fathering her children with no thought of the actual children or the relationships that were being sort of shredded! The only thing I disliked was the ending. The villain, who actually committed the murder, was painted as insane and working through a mental defect instead of just being represented as evil! You can be a conniving selfish witch, but that doesn't mean that your murderer isn't evil!
I liked that so much time was spent on personalities and development of same. Of course, in so doing, the author cause the reader to strongly dislike most of the characters! But it was still a well-rounded story with good developments and motivations – despite the fact that a lot of these motivations were disliked; that doesn't change the fact that they were believable. Overall, a satisfying book, despite some of the questions brought about the legal system and how it really would approach the fatherhood situations!

Bliss Fenton is gorgeous, sexy, and a man's dream in the bedroom. The problem is, the bedroom romps are more about scandal than pleasure for her. While the rich and wealthy men are looking for a good time, Bliss is looking for her next come-up. It is no coincidence that all three of her children are by rich men and that she received hefty child support payments to support her extravagant lifestyle. With her daughter's Father Fletcher, the CEO of a music company, she may have bitten off more than she can chew. Fletcher will spare no expense to keep her hands off his money, her ex best friend Mia who is also Fletcher's fiancee is equally pissed that Bliss is trying to ruin her fiancee's life. Bliss only has one friend named Jessica....and even Jessica can't help Bliss get out of this mess. Jessica will soon find out Bliss has no friends.....her only loyalty is to her lifestyle. I loved this book....it was full of suspense but I only gave it four stars because I figured out the murderer in the very beginning.

Bliss Fenton is a money hungry opportunist who uses her children as meal tickets, and she has gone too far when she butts heads with not one, but two of her baby daddies. Her best friend, Jessica, tries to be there for Bliss, but does she have a hidden agenda? Her lawyer, Girlie Cortez, has a point to prove by getting back into the courtroom, and wanna be private investigator, Special, is very good at what she does 26but is always in search of her "one true love"! Who can forget Darius? I don't know where the author got him from, but Lawd 26what a mess!!! This is one character that will stay with me for a long time!

I loved this book, could not put it down, and highly recommend it!

I'm biased - our book club has been reading her books and hosting her for visits since reading her first (eventually published) manuscript. It's great to see her turn her mystery series into a mechanism to highlight issues, which it already does by having an attorney who is a black woman as the heroine created by...wait for it...an attorney who is a black woman and for some time now, an author. This was a quick, entertaining page-turner but is also a PSA for men, especially those who are intended targets of paternity suits. I had NO idea. Good, speedy read.

Not surprisingly Pamela Samuels Young does it again! I read this book in a day and am mad at myself for reading so fast because now I'm sad that it's over!

All of the Vernetta Henderson books are excellent. I've enjoyed every novel and short by this author and am anxiously awaiting her next release.

This book is fast paced, comical and very realistic, plus it takes place in my home town! A definite must read!

AWESOME

Awesome is the best word to describe the book. It's definitely a page turner. It kept me on my toes trying to get to what was going to happen next. Bliss Fenton was a character like no other. Stepping all over people just to get what she wants. She's so awful I just couldn't wait for karma to kick her butt. This book is worth every minute I took reading it this weekend.

I thought it was slow at first (I like to get right into the action), but once I got into it, it was hard to put the book down. What I didn't care for, but made me chuckle nonetheless, were the strange names like "Bliss" and "Special". Huh? It was quite suspenseful and I had fun guessing who the killer was since there were so many viable suspects. I didn't figure out who did it until close to the end. I had my suspicions, but it kept changing until the end.

I thought the characters names - Girlie, Special, Bliss - were a bit silly, but then it helped me keep in perspective that this book was just met for an enjoyable read. And it was every bit of that. It has been a while since I've read a book that I didn't want to put down. I show this book is a thriller, but I think it is more of a chick lit type of read. Probably not a lot of men would enjoy it, even as well as it was written. I'm off to read another of the author's books!

Lawful Deception was a high wire act

This story felt like a circus high wire act. Bliss, the leading lady was such a conniving witch that eventually karma caught up with her. Venetta always handles her business. Girly was being evil lawyer Girly. For some reason I did not like Fletcher this time around. Jefferson, Venettas husband, is probably the smartest one to be the least educated. I like his thoughtful comments.

Mrs. Pamela Samuels Young has crafted a THRILLING Mystery Suspense series...AGAIN I was thoroughly CAUGHT UP in Vernetta Henderson's life as a lawyer and the VIVID and lively off-the-chain cast of characters that kept me turning the pages. I HOPE this isn't the END of the Vernetta Henderson series...I would love to see Special FINALLY get a decent man and it would also be NICE if Girlie Cortez needed Vernetta's help...lol!!

A great read, keep me trying to figure out who killedBliss . Bliss was as trifling as anyone could possibly be, her tactics were e off the chain, When Jessica hacked her husband's computer I realized who shot Bliss. I have to read the other books. Starring Vendetta. Kudos to you Ms. Young!!!!!!!,

Great book. Given the subject matter and circumstances, as a man, this made me feel a little uncomfortable. Some of the instances hit a little too close to home, for me. However, any time a book can make you have an emotional response to the scenarios, is the mark of a great book. This was a really really good page-turner of a book. Great read.

I liked the female lead cast of this book and even though I had inklings about the true killer, it was still a satisfying surprise when it all came together. I didn't really understand the necessity of Special's personal side story, except for the gratuitous addition of "sexiness", I found it distracting from the equally scandalous crime side of the novel.
