Nocturnal Creatures

Rate this book
Alex had grown up hiding his cat ears and tail. It was easy if he didn't get close to anyone. But when his crush, Victor, also known as the most handsome guy in college, starts to take an interest in him, Alex can feel himself slipping. The more he gets to know Victor, he realizes that he's not the only one hiding something.

Victor doesn't like to socialize much in spite of being popular. He's the kind of person who once he's set his eyes on something, won't stop until he gets what he wants. And he's set his sight on Alex.

Neither Alex nor Victor could be called normal humans, each of them being an abnormal person that sets them apart from everyone else including each other. Will they be able to accept each other and face the challenges being together brings?

Hi, I'm Zen Larsson, I'm a 20-something year old LGBT author, that may or may not be a ghost, and can be found writing my next story during my college class lectures. Computer science and building mobile applications is what I'm studying in college but writing romances and what ever else floats into my head is where my passion lies. I mainly decided to try publishing after my friend said my voice could change the world.

I received a copy of this book though goodreads mm romance group's Don't buy my Love for free from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Alex doesn't really have friends, he keeps to himself so that no one discovers his secret. He's a Neko, with cat ears and tail.
Victor has been made to socialise again. His elders sent him off to college to meet people again. He's gorgeous and popular, but isn't interested in socialising with anyone. Until he notices shy Alex, who is obviously hiding something.

I was a little disappointed. I thought about giving it 2 stars but decided on 3 cause I thought it was short and sweet with a couple of nice twists. I liked the premise for this story, but I didn't think it followed though. It was instant love. I liked the twists in the story, but nothing was really brought to completion, or had real consequences. It was a quick read. But I felt it should have been a longer, fuller story. It also, I think, swapped POVs once or twice, but I'm not too sure, I found that a bit complicated.

Things that got on my nerves:
Alex has a best friend, but we don't hear about him at all, he doesn't want to get close to him in case he finds out his secret, but then he does know! And we only see him once, and it's only really to elude to a possible 2nd book.
Alex is made out to be all alone, but his family are all nekos too. A little background on Alex would have been good too. Where is his dad, who are his siblings? And background on Victor would have been nice.
Alex has this big secret, but on his second meeting with Victor he lets the cat out of the bag, willing letting him see. He also sees that Victor is keeping a secret, but he doesn't bother to ask for ages.
Also no 19 year old would have been kept in the dark about a medical issue while they talked to his mother.
What happened to Katerina?
Also I felt like either Alex was always crying, or had his eyes closed.

I hate being too negative when writing my reviews -more so when the author is young- but I also believe that when someone puts their work up to review they appreciate the honesty.

Nocturnal Creatures was a 1.5 star read for me, but I’m rounding it up to two. There were quite a lot of things that didn’t work for me, but I’m going to make three main points.

Firstly the characters weren’t well developed. They acted younger than their age and made a completely painless transition from students to a married couple with a child.

Secondly there was too much going on. Either the story should have been extended quite a bit or the plot should have been more focused on the original idea of a vamp and a neko dating and finding out each other’s secret. As it is, Nocturnal Creatures reminded me greatly of Wattpad stories, which is okay if you’re putting it out there for free.

Lastly the writing wasn’t all that good. There was a sense of rush and not much personality.

Despite all this, I do believe the author has enthusiasm and cared for this particular story. Sometimes when you are so eager to tell the story you have in your head you neglect to give it enough time to develop.

I can see that there is a world behind these characters and there is imagination. With those you can go far, if you just keep on writing and try to find your own voice.

My thanks to the author and the program.

This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review.

This is a sweet story about two guys getting together in collage. Victor is about 142 years old and told by his elders that he has to get out more and socialize, so he goes back to school. Alex is in his Jr year and has just turned 20. He still lives at home with his mother and siblings. Mother is definitely in mother mode but is excited when he starts dating. The problem I have with this story is that everything is instantaneous. There is some talk about the past but not much. Both their secrets are given up quickly with not a lot of shock, so there is no real tension in the story. I don't know why there secrets were secrets to begin with. Are we in a world where everyone knows of the paranormal? Victor states at one point others that have found out his secret rejected him, so that tells me it's not that big a deal. And Alex's mother doesn't seemed worried about anyone finding out her children are different.

i debated to give this a two star, but like I said it's a nice short read. It just needed more world building and more inside thoughts of what is going on inside the two MC's minds. Too straight forward for me.

Alex is a 19yr old neko in college who has a crush on the most hottest guy in school who he thinks will never notice him. Victor is 142 yr old vampire with the appearance of a 18 yr old who attends the same school as Alex. Unknown to Alex, Victor has noticed him and is intrigued by him. So when Victor asks Alex out, Alex can't help but jump at the chance.

From the blurb I was expecting more character and relationship development. I missed seeing the romance buildup between Alex and Victor since they had such a whirlwind romance. Their relations moved really quickly. Victor' proposal within the first few pages seemed a little crazy to me (I did like the idea of it though). I felt like I missed something and was reading from the middle.

I felt like there was no sense of time in the even though the author mentioned a month passed here or a few months over there. This gave the feeling of the story being rushed and not being paced.

The whole vampire and neko thing was interesting. Alex getting through what happened to him really grabbed my attention and I was curious about what would happen their daughter and her development.

I am being fairly generous by giving this two stars. The idea was cute but the writing needs a lot of polishing. But, according to the bio, the author is young and fairly new to writing and I've read much worse stuff by older, more experienced folks, so two stars.

I think the author shows promise and if they are willing to put forth the effort then eventually their work will shine.
