Leadership in the Shadows describes, in detail, a set of leadership principles which have been proven in the most challenging conditions America has faced over the last two decades. The author SGM (R) Kyle Lamb, spent most of his twenty plus year military career with multiple operational units within the United States Army's Special Operations community. During this time, he continually honed his leadership skills while being selected for one critical assignment after another. Leadership in the Shadows brings those leadership lessons to you. Drawn from real life experiences, SGM Lamb's lessons will give you the tools and insight to raise your leadership skills to the next level. Whether you're in the corporate world, military, or law enforcement, the knowledge in Leadership in the Shadows will help guide your team to mission success.
This is one of the best books I have read on the topic of leadership. Pack full of real world information on Frontline Leadership and tie decision making required. Outstanding read
Probably one of the best leadership books I ever read because it is not rooted in gimmicks or revolutionary concepts. But rather, it is a grounded evaluation into introspection to determine the qualities of good leaders in practical ways that doesn't force you into changing your personality, but instead to be self-sacrificing and team oriented.
This is one of the best books I have read on leadership. This book is very informative and written so that all can understand and apply the practices. Kyle has given the secrets to developing leadership to all who take the time to read and utilize this guide.
A ton of leadership wisdom I had never heard of before. Great anecdotes and examples. Highly readable! I want to keep this book close as I move towards becoming an officer in the Air Force's special operation forces, because its wisdom will serve me well as I seek to serve my fellow soldiers or anyone I work and live alongside.
This book was introduced to me during a deployment. I’d been struggling and a friend / mentor suggested I read it. I’m so glad I did. It reinforced my beliefs and taught me new perspectives. I’ve read it a few times since then. Can’t say enough good things about it.
Chapters are focused, quick, and too the point. Relevance of military tactics, procedures and principles is consistently transferred to business and home life. Strong focus, of course, on responsibility and accountability, something much needed in business and society. Can’t recommend enough.
Good book that successfully merged the author's spec ops experience with general leadership tenets
This was a good book that was an easy read and a good summary of some of the author's spec ops leadership observations and personal experiences. Worth reading for the perspective.
Excellent information and learning points. The organization and chapter structure does not lend itself well to audio format, I would say this is a 5 star book on paper, 4 on audio.
If you found a bunch of blue collar factory workers at their local bar, bought them their drinks, and asked them on the characteristics they thought made a good boss, you'd probably get similar things to what you'd find in this book.
And that's not necessarily a bad thing. There's a lot of good common sense in there, like how you should keep yourself to similar standards, or clearly state your goals, and so on, that a lot of people forget. I think a lot of people will read this book, and find at least something that they could do better, and even if you're one of those people that do everything right, it serves as a good reminder.
But he also misses out on a lot of the big picture, which makes sense. Kyle Lamb was a sergeant major of the special operations of the US Army, which about makes him the worlds largest middle management badass in the world. But he could also take for granted a lot that most top level leaders can't. He probably always had someone setting mission objectives, and probably never had to politic for resources. He was probably more of a supervisor than a "leader", which aren't usually the same thing.
But "Supervisorship in the Shadows" doesn't have the same ring to it.
Current and aspiring leaders need to read this book! SGM (Retired) Lamb expertly translates profound and vital leadership teachings into practical strategies for mission success and personal achievement. I especially liked the chapter on family leadership, a topic missing from other leadership books I have read, wherein SGM Lamb offers direct advice about the importance of taking care of family relationships since they are the ones who will (hopefully) be by your side when your tour has ended, and you are no longer a member of the team. This book is full of powerful leadership wisdom that doesn't get shared enough.
